Chapter 39 - Venom

As she pushed open the door, she was greeted by the warm glow of the chandelier. But her smile faltered as she saw Wesley's mother, Victoria, standing in the foyer, her eyes narrowed in disdain.

"Charlotte, darling," Victoria said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I see you're still enjoying the luxuries of our estate. Tell me, what exactly do you do to earn your keep around here?"

Charlotte's eyes flashed with anger, but she kept her cool, a slow smile spreading across her face. "I do whatever it takes to keep Wesley happy, Mrs. Jameson. And that's all that matters, isn't it?"

Victoria's eyes narrowed, her face pale with rage. "You think you're clever, don't you? But let me tell you something, Charlotte. You're nothing but a temporary distraction for my son. And soon, you'll be nothing but a memory."

Charlotte's smile never wavered, but her eyes sparkled with a hint of defiance. "We'll see about that, Mrs. Jameson. We'll see about that."
