"Alright, Master, what's my first mission?" Rain asked, anticipation clear in his voice as he turned to Makarov.
Makarov's gaze was steady. "Your first task is to dismantle a dark guild." He paused, and a flicker of concern passed over his face. "But you won't be going alone."
"Erza, could you come here, please?" Makarov called.
Erza appeared swiftly, her stance steady, her expression focused. "Yes, Master? What's going on?"
"Rain's about to head out on his first mission, and I'd like you to go with him. Guide him, show him the ropes, and see if he's ready for solo assignments." His voice softened, showing both pride and caution.
She nodded. "Of course, Master." Turning to Rain, she added, "We'll meet tomorrow at the train station."
"Looking forward to it," Rain replied, offering his hand with a small smile.
"To a good partnership," she said, her grip firm, her gaze direct.
The next morning, Rain felt a mixture of excitement and nerves as he waited at the train station. Erza arrived, her expression all business, and together they boarded the train. As they traveled, Rain's thoughts drifted to the mission ahead, the unknown challenges lurking within it. He cast a glance at Erza, who sat quietly, exuding a calm strength he hoped to emulate.
After about thirty minutes, they arrived at a small, quiet town nestled between misty mountains. They made their way to the mayor's residence, where the man waited for them, his expression lined with worry.
"Welcome, Fairy Tail mages. Are you not a bit young for this kind of assignment?" he asked, casting a skeptical glance at Rain.
"If Master Makarov trusts us, then you can too," Erza replied confidently, her tone leaving no room for doubt.
The mayor's gaze shifted, some of the skepticism giving way to relief. "Very well. Every month, these people raid our town, taking some of our residents with them."
"Do you know why or how long this has been happening?" Rain asked, his voice steady but edged with curiosity.
"It began a few months ago. We don't know why, but some believe they're performing some kind of ritual." He paused, glancing away, unable to mask the worry shadowing his eyes.
"Thank you for sharing," Rain replied, casting a thoughtful glance at Erza.
"Rain, we should investigate firsthand," Erza suggested, sensing his unspoken thoughts.
Nodding, he replied, "Good idea." The two set off up the mountain trail toward the guild's rumored lair, where dark clouds loomed ominously above.
As they walked, Erza noticed a pensive look in Rain's eyes. "What are you thinking about?" she asked.
"I think I know what they're trying to summon," he replied, voice low. "I suspect it's a demon. They'll need a lot of sacrifices, and this timing feels like it's nearing a final ritual."
A flash of determination crossed Erza's face. "Then let's not waste a moment," she said, quickening her pace.
They reached the guild's lair in silence, the weight of their mission heavy in the air. With a burst of energy, they smashed through the doors, the sound echoing off the stone walls as startled dark mages turned toward them.
"Intruders!" they shouted, raising their arms to cast spells.
"Erza, take care of the underlings. I'll handle the ritual," Rain instructed, locking eyes with her briefly.
Erza nodded. "Leave it to me." Without hesitation, she charged forward, her blades flashing in the dim light as she faced down the group of mages, her movements swift and precise.
Rain sprinted through the hall, dodging spells cast his way without looking back. His focus was sharp, a thrill coursing through him. As he neared the ritual chamber, a monstrous roar filled the air, chilling him momentarily before he steadied himself. He reached the heart of the lair and felt a rush of dark energy. Before him stood a towering demon, its face twisted in a malevolent grin, its eyes flickering like embers.
The demon's voice rumbled, "Human, I sense your magic. Surrender now, and I'll make your end quick."
The demon's laughter boomed, resonating through the chamber as if it had already won. But Rain remained unflinching.
"Why do you think you can defeat me?" Rain replied, his voice calm, a hint of defiance in his gaze.
The demon's eyes narrowed, offended. With a roar, it charged at Rain, its claws reaching out with deadly intent. Rain dodged with agility, grabbing the demon's arm mid-swing and using its momentum to slam it into the ground.
The demon staggered back, astonished. "That was…luck!"
It lunged again, fists raining down. Rain blocked with one hand and, with the other, drove a powerful blow into its chest, sending it crashing back into the wall, the impact leaving a visible crater. The demon's body began to regenerate, but its smug confidence was now replaced with a smoldering rage.
"Enough games, human," it sneered, dark magic crackling around its claws. "Demon Shot!"
The blast of dark energy struck Rain, yet he remained still, barely fazed.
"Is that all you have?" he asked, emerging from the smoke without a scratch.
"Impossible…" the demon muttered, dread flashing in its eyes.
Rain's gaze hardened. "Let me show you a real attack." He raised his hand, gathering energy, and his voice dropped to a dangerous whisper. "Cruel Sun."
A sphere of blazing energy materialized, casting an intense glow as he hurled it at the demon. The creature let out a guttural roar, but the attack engulfed it entirely, leaving nothing behind but silence.
Exhaling, Rain turned to find Erza, who had just dispatched the last of the dark mages.
"All done?" she asked, sheathing her swords.
"Yeah. All clear. Let's go report back to the mayor," Rain replied, both relieved and proud.
They returned to the mayor, reporting their success. With immense gratitude, he handed over their reward, his relief palpable.
As they traveled back to Magnolia, a sense of accomplishment filled Rain. They arrived at the guild to find Makarov waiting, his eyes twinkling with pride.
"Well done, Rain," he said, a satisfied smile on his face.
"Thank you, Master. I think I'll get myself a place of my own now," Rain replied, feeling the pride swell within him.
With his reward and an immense sense of achievement, Rain purchased his own home. His skill, which multiplied his earnings, made it easy, and he knew he had Makarov to thank for his success.
