A year had flown by since Rain joined Fairy Tail. In that time, he'd undergone an incredible transformation, completing numerous high-stakes A-Class missions and even taking on a few assignments challenging enough to be called S-Class. Rain's reputation had spread not only among the guild but throughout Magnolia, and with it, his friendships deepened, especially with Erza and Mira, with whom he'd shared countless missions. Their bond grew stronger with each task, each moment spent working as a seamless team, pushing through impossible odds. Natsu's constant challenges kept Rain on his toes, and their sparring matches had become a guild tradition, each one a spectacle of fiery determination and raw magic.
Now, Rain found himself on a rare free day, reclining on his bed as he admired his status, taking in the growth he'd achieved over the past year.

"Unbelievable," Rain mused, a satisfied grin crossing his face. "To think I'm standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the legends of Fairy Tail." He chuckled to himself. "Good thing I placed seals on my power… I'd probably have half the guild in a panic if they saw what I'm really capable of."
Freshly motivated, Rain leapt to his feet, freshened up, and made his way to the guild. The streets of Magnolia were lively, as usual, and townsfolk greeted him warmly. Rain returned every greeting, marveling at how much Fairy Tail had grown to feel like a second home. But when he entered the guild hall, he found it eerily quiet—only Makarov and the receptionist were around.
"Rain," Makarov greeted, his face brightening. "Good to see you! It's not often you're without a mission, but even you need a break sometimes."
"Morning, Master," Rain replied, glancing around the empty hall. "But where is everyone?"
Makarov's eyes sparkled with a mischievous gleam. "Well, you see, it's almost time for a certain event… one you might not be familiar with."
Rain raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "An event? You've piqued my interest, Master."
The days passed in a relaxed blur, Rain watching the guild's bustling activity from the sidelines for once. Then, on the sixth day, an electrifying buzz filled the hall as everyone gathered around the stage. Makarov stood at the front, his expression both solemn and spirited. He let the anticipation build before speaking.
"Listen well, my children," he announced. "This year, only two guild members have shown the potential to undertake the S-Class Trial."
Whispers rippled through the crowd as members exchanged glances, wondering who would be chosen.
"The first nominee… Laxus Dreyar."
The Thunder Legion broke into cheers, a surge of excitement reverberating through the crowd.
Makarov raised his hand for silence before continuing, "And the second is… Rain."
The guild hall fell silent, stunned for a moment before erupting into enthusiastic cheers and gasps. Rain's heart raced; he had dreamed of this moment but never expected it so soon. Laxus caught Rain's eye, his gaze intense and challenging, a hint of arrogance flashing in his smirk.
"I've heard you're strong, but don't think that means you stand a chance against me," Laxus said, his voice cold and full of confidence.
Rain met his gaze steadily. "Guess we'll see, won't we?"
As Laxus turned and strode away, Erza, Mira, Gray, and Natsu rushed over, their excitement palpable.
"You've got this, Rain!" Erza assured him, her expression determined and proud.
"And don't think I'll stop challenging you if you pass the trial," Mira teased, feigning indifference, though her eyes gleamed with pride.
"Rain! Fight me! Fire Dragon Iron Fist!" Natsu yelled, lunging forward with fire blazing in his fists.
With an amused smile, Rain flicked his wrist casually.
BOOM! Natsu shot upward, colliding with the ceiling. "Aye…" Happy sighed, glancing up. "Natsu, that's four hundred to zero."
Then, a sudden tolling of bells cut through the laughter. A hush fell as everyone turned, eyes widening with anticipation. An orange-haired man strode into the guild, radiating a powerful, effortless aura of magic.
"Gildarts!" the guild cheered, thrilled by the return of Fairy Tail's ace.
Natsu scrambled up, his face lit with excitement as he shouted, "I challenge you, Gildarts!" He charged, fist blazing, only to find himself knocked into the ceiling with a single, casual motion from Gildarts.
"Four hundred for Gildarts and none for Natsu," Happy commented dryly.
Gildarts laughed, shaking his head before greeting Makarov. "Mission complete, Master," he reported, smiling.
"Perfect timing!" Makarov replied. "Oh, Gildarts, meet Rain." He gestured to the young mage standing a few feet away.
Gildarts turned, his eyes sharpening as he sized up Rain, feeling the immense magical energy radiating from him. Rain met his gaze steadily, feeling an undeniable strength in the older mage.
"Good to meet you, Rain," Gildarts said with a grin. "I'm looking forward to seeing what you're made of."
"Same here," Rain replied, matching his grin.
The two spoke briefly, sharing stories and exchanging thoughts on magic and training. Rain couldn't help but feel a growing respect for Gildarts' laid-back demeanor and raw power.
The week flew by in a whirlwind of final preparations. Rain trained rigorously, sparring with Erza, strategizing with Gray, and receiving fiery encouragement from Natsu. By the time the morning of the trial arrived, Rain was primed and ready.
