I rolled off my bed reluctantly, still groggy from the sleepless night that began when the wind rattled the windows. Adjusting my robe, I stood up to shut them after hours of drowsy procrastination. I smiled at the beach's quietude, only the gentle waves lapping at the shore and crickets chirping in the distance.
An odd memory flashed in my mind—Alan and I during a school trip. We had snuck out of our hotel rooms the night before we left and ended up dozing beneath a palm tree. I hastily shoved the memory away, trying to forget it.
