Chereads / Light a Shadows: Eveline's fate / Chapter 28 - Chapter 28

Chapter 28 - Chapter 28

The air was tense at the academy. Preparations for the fencing festival were nearly complete, but a dark cloud seemed to hang over the event. Eveline couldn't shake the feeling that something significant was about to happen, something that would change everything.

After her encounter with Marius, she knew he represented a greater danger than others realized. There was something sinister about him, and his words still echoed in her mind: "You have the chance to be something much greater." The proposal he had made to her—to join forces and control the shadows—was tempting, but Eveline could not give in. She refused to be corrupted by the same power that Marius had clearly accepted.

On the morning of the festival, Eveline woke with a strange sensation in her chest. Her intuition told her that this day would be a turning point, both for her and for the academy.

---

The fencing festival was one of the most anticipated events of the year. Students, teachers, nobles, and citizens gathered to watch the competitions, which were a test of skill, honor, and dexterity. However, Eveline knew that this year, the festival would be more than just an entertainment event.

The arena was packed. The stands were filled with enthusiastic spectators, and the celebratory atmosphere was almost palpable. But for Eveline, all of it felt like a prelude to something much darker.

She was backstage, adjusting her sword and taking deep breaths. Aria and Alaric stood by her side, both ready to participate in the competitions as well.

"Are you okay?" Alaric asked, noticing Eveline's distant gaze.

"I am," she replied, trying to sound confident. "But I feel like something is about to happen. Something involving Marius."

Aria nodded, concerned. "He's been acting strange lately. And after what you told me about your meeting with him, we need to keep our eyes open."

Eveline agreed. She had shared her suspicions about Marius and his connection to the shadows with her friends. Alaric and Aria were equally worried, but they knew they couldn't accuse him without solid proof. So, they decided to keep a discreet watch.

---

When the festival began, the initial competitions went on normally. Eveline easily defeated her opponents, showcasing her sharp skill with the sword. She was focused, but her mind never strayed too far from the threat Marius represented.

Finally, the time came for the most anticipated duel: Eveline versus Marius. The crowd fell silent as they entered the arena. There was a visible tension between them, and everyone could sense that this would not be an ordinary match.

"Well, the time has come," Marius said, a smile that didn't reach his eyes on his face. "Are you ready to accept your destiny, Eveline?"

"I won't let you continue with your dark plans, Marius," Eveline replied, raising her sword. "I am not like you."

"Maybe not yet," he said, spinning his own sword in the air. "But you will feel the call of the shadows sooner or later. They cannot be ignored."

The judge signaled the start, and in the blink of an eye, the two charged at each other.

Marius was quick; his swordsmanship was undeniable, employing precise and calculated movements. Eveline, on the other hand, had the perfect balance of strength and agility. With every strike exchanged, their swords clashed, sending sparks flying that seemed to reflect the tension between them.

But as the duel intensified, Eveline began to notice something strange. The shadows around the arena seemed to move oddly, as if drawn toward the center, where she and Marius fought.

"He is using the shadows," Umbra whispered in her mind. "He has already accepted the power. If you don't do the same, you will be defeated."

Eveline felt the weight of those words. Marius wasn't just fighting with physical skill; he was using the shadows to his advantage, amplifying his strength and speed. Eveline could feel the mounting pressure with each strike, as if the darkness itself was empowering him.

"Feeling it, are you, Eveline?" Marius said between attacks. "The shadows obey me. And they can obey you too."

Eveline gritted her teeth. She knew she needed a strategy. She couldn't allow the shadows to dominate her, but she also couldn't ignore the fact that Marius had the upper hand.

Suddenly, he jumped back, raising his free hand. The shadows around the arena responded instantly, advancing toward Eveline like dark, pulsating tendrils. The audience gasped in shock; many screamed in fear, while others watched in frozen horror.

Eveline recoiled, but she knew she couldn't keep retreating. She raised her sword, and at the moment the shadows were about to touch her, she closed her eyes and concentrated.

"Light and shadows," she thought. "I will not be consumed by either. They are part of me, but I am the one in control."

With a determined shout, Eveline released a wave of brilliant light from her sword. The light spread across the arena, driving back the shadows Marius had summoned and illuminating the battlefield. For a brief moment, everything seemed to freeze.

Marius looked at her, surprised. "You… you really managed to use both forces…"

Eveline charged forward, her sword glowing with the light she had conjured, but still with shadows dancing around her. She had found the balance between the two forces, and now she was more powerful than ever.

"I am the one who decides my fate," Eveline said, her voice resolute. "And I will stop you from continuing this madness."

She attacked, and Marius barely had time to react. The clash of swords was the last sound to echo through the arena before Eveline disarmed him with a precise move. Marius's sword flew through the air, landing on the ground with a metallic thud.

He fell to his knees, gasping and defeated. The shadows around him began to dissipate, as if losing their strength.

The audience, which had been holding its breath throughout the confrontation, erupted in applause. But Eveline knew this was far from a final victory. Marius, even in defeat, still held secrets, and the shadows he had summoned were just the beginning of something much larger.

"You may have won this duel," Marius murmured, looking up at her with a weak smile. "But the shadows… they cannot be destroyed so easily. The true enemy is still to come."

Eveline felt a chill run down her spine. Marius's words were a warning, a portent of what lay ahead.

And the fencing festival, which was supposed to be a celebration, was now becoming the prelude to an impending war between light and shadows.
