Chereads / Light a Shadows: Eveline's fate / Chapter 34 - Chapter 34

Chapter 34 - Chapter 34

The dark hall of the castle was shrouded in a heavy and threatening atmosphere. Shadows writhed around Eveline and Khaen like hungry creatures, waiting for the duel to begin. The light of the full moon, which should have been a source of comfort, felt distant and cold, unable to penetrate the darkness swirling in the air.

Khaen, with his enigmatic smile and unwavering confidence, watched Eveline with eyes glowing a bright red. He extended his arms, and the shadows responded to his call, taking on misshapen forms that danced around him like an extension of his will.

"Do you really think you can defeat me?" Khaen mocked, his voice echoing like a dark whisper throughout the hall. "The shadows have chosen you, Eveline. You are part of them now, whether you admit it or not."

Eveline stood firm, gripping her sword that shone with a golden light. "I am not a puppet of the shadows, Khaen. I have my own will. And it is with that will that I will destroy you."

Khaen laughed, a dark and menacing sound. "Let's see how long that determination lasts."

With a swift movement, Khaen unleashed the shadows toward Eveline. They surged forward like hungry serpents, trying to envelop and suffocate her. Eveline instinctively reacted, raising her sword and releasing a bright arc of light that cleaved the shadows in two, dissipating them into the air.

The battle had begun.

---

Eveline knew that fighting Khaen wouldn't be like facing any other enemy. He was not just a master of shadows; he was the shadows themselves. Each strike she delivered was met with an unrelenting assault of darkness. The shadows seemed endless, attacking her from all sides, regenerating whenever they were cut.

However, something within Eveline was changing. With each blow she struck with her sword of light, she sensed the shadows around her responding strangely, as if they were hesitating. There was a connection, a deep bond between her and the darkness. Eveline realized she could not fight against the shadows in the conventional way. They were part of her, just as the light was.

As she fought, memories of her past began to resurface — the loneliness, the isolation, the feeling of being misunderstood. The shadows were not merely an external power; they were the reflection of her repressed emotions, her own inner darkness. To defeat Khaen, she needed to embrace that part of herself.

Khaen charged forward, his own sword cloaked in darkness, and the two clashed at the center of the hall. The impact of their blades generated an explosion of energy, throwing both of them back. Khaen, however, seemed more frustrated than injured.

"You are resisting, but not for long," he said, raising his sword once more. "The shadows will consume you. It's inevitable."

Eveline, breathing heavily, kept her eyes fixed on him. "I won't fight against the shadows, Khaen. I will use them."

Khaen furrowed his brow, confused by her declaration.

It was then that Eveline closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. She felt the shadows around her, within her. Instead of rejecting them, she accepted them, allowing them to flow through her body. The shadows were not her enemy; they were part of her power, just like the light.

When Eveline opened her eyes again, something had changed. Light and shadows now danced around her in perfect harmony, as if they had finally found balance. Her sword shone with renewed intensity, but there was also a dark aura surrounding her, giving her newfound strength.

Khaen watched, incredulous. "This is impossible!"

Eveline charged forward, her speed and power now enhanced by the fusion of the two forces. With each strike, she wielded light and shadows simultaneously, destabilizing Khaen. His shadows, once seemingly invincible, were now being repelled.

Furious, Khaen channeled all the darkness around him, creating an impenetrable barrier. "You cannot defeat me! I am the shadows! I am chaos!"

Eveline looked at him with determination in her eyes. "You are just a man lost in the darkness."

She concentrated all the power within her — light and shadows fused in her blade. In a final movement, Eveline charged against Khaen's barrier and struck a blow that cut through the darkness.

There was a moment of silence, followed by an explosion of energy. Khaen was thrown back, and the shadows surrounding him began to dissipate. He fell to the ground, his form engulfed in fragmented darkness, as his body slowly vanished, as if absorbed by the very shadows he once controlled.

Before disappearing completely, Khaen looked at Eveline with a mix of anger and something that almost resembled... respect.

"You... have won... but the shadows... will never disappear..." were his last words before he was swallowed by the final darkness.

---

The hall fell silent. The shadows, now free from Khaen, dissipated completely, leaving Eveline alone in the center of the room. She felt the weight of the battle, both physically and emotionally. The shadows were still with her, but now, they were under her control. She no longer feared them.

Eveline gazed at the full moon through a broken window. The silver light gently touched the castle floor, a reminder that, despite the darkness, light would always be there to guide her.

The fate she feared had been altered. Eveline was now the master of her own destiny — both of shadows and light.

She knew this wouldn't be the last time she faced challenges, but now she was stronger, more prepared. The shadows had been part of her journey, but they did not define her. And as long as there was light within her, she would always find her way.

With one last look around, Eveline turned and began her journey back to the academy. She knew that the true battle for her soul had not yet ended, but for now, she had achieved an important victory — over the shadows and over herself.
