Chereads / Light a Shadows: Eveline's fate / Chapter 29 - Chapter 29

Chapter 29 - Chapter 29

The silence in the arena lasted only a moment, but for Eveline, it felt like an eternity. The thunderous applause of the crowd echoed around her, yet her mind was fixated on Marius's last words. Even in defeat, he wore a defiant look, a mixture of admiration and something darker, as if he knew something she couldn't see.

As the academy medics helped Marius to his feet and out of the arena, Eveline still held her sword at the ready, the blade trembling slightly under the weight of the magic she had just unleashed. She had managed to control both light and shadows—something she hadn't known was possible until that moment. Yet, instead of feeling relief or victory, a sense of unease consumed her.

Alaric and Aria rushed to her as soon as the arena was cleared. The fencing festival had been officially suspended due to the unprecedented display of magic during the duel. The atmosphere at the academy shifted rapidly from excitement to a mix of fear and confusion.

"Are you okay?" Alaric asked, still panting from the excitement of the match.

Eveline nodded, but her gaze remained fixed on the doors through which Marius had been taken. "He knew what he was doing. Marius wasn't just trying to win the duel. He was trying to test me."

Aria looked skeptical. "Test you? How so?"

"He wanted to see if I could control the shadows," Eveline replied, her voice low as she struggled to organize her thoughts. "He wanted me to accept the same power he has. But what concerns me more is what he said at the end."

"The real enemy is still to come," Alaric repeated, frowning. "He was talking about the shadows, wasn't he?"

Eveline took a deep breath. "I think so. Marius was just a pawn in something much larger. He challenged me to see how far I would go, but the true threat is still out there. The shadows... they are closer than we realize."

Aria placed a hand on Eveline's shoulder. "You just did something no one else has. Controlling both light and shadows at the same time? That's incredible, but also dangerous. We need to understand what this means."

"We have to learn more about the Veiled Alliance and what Marius really wanted with this duel," Alaric said, his eyes fixed on the now-empty arena. "If he was acting under someone's orders, there might still be a chance to stop whatever is coming."

---

That night, Eveline couldn't sleep. Marius's words echoed in her mind, and the feeling that something dark was approaching was almost suffocating. She knew that controlling both light and shadows made her different. There was a power within her that no one else possessed, but that power also placed her at the center of a conflict she barely began to understand.

In the middle of the night, she decided she could wait no longer. Donning her cloak, she silently slipped out of her room and headed to the forbidden wing of the academy, where ancient texts and documents on magic were kept.

The place was cloaked in darkness, illuminated only by weak torches. The ancestral library, hidden from ordinary students, housed the academy's oldest secrets. It was there that Eveline hoped to find answers about the Veiled Alliance, the shadows, and perhaps about herself.

As she walked among the ancient shelves, Eveline felt the weight of centuries of knowledge surrounding her. Texts on sorcery, magical fencing, and forbidden treaties were kept in dark, weathered shelves. But in a secluded corner, where the shadows seemed denser, Eveline found a scroll bearing the emblem she now recognized: the symbol of the Veiled Alliance.

Carefully unrolling the scroll, her eyes scanned the text quickly. The words were vague, but one passage caught her attention.

"He who controls light and shadow shall be the heir of the ancient pact. But with great power comes also great curse. The shadows serve no one; they watch patiently until the moment to claim what is theirs."

A shiver ran down Eveline's spine. Whatever the shadows represented, they were not a force to be simply wielded. There was something much deeper and more dangerous at play. And now, she found herself at the center of it all.

Suddenly, a noise echoed down the corridor. Eveline quickly tucked the scroll away and hid behind a shelf. Someone was coming.

The footsteps echoed through the silent room, and soon a hooded figure appeared. Eveline squinted, trying to recognize who it was, but the darkness made it hard to identify the person. The figure approached the shelves, heading straight for the spot where Eveline had found the scroll of the Veiled Alliance.

"He knows about the documents," Eveline thought.

Without making a sound, she moved around the room, trying to get closer to the intruder without being noticed. When she was finally close enough, Eveline stepped out from her hiding place and pointed her sword at the figure.

"Who are you, and what are you doing here?"

The figure froze for a moment but then slowly raised their hands in surrender. "You're much more alert than I expected," said a familiar voice.

Eveline narrowed her eyes. "Marius?"

He lowered his hood, revealing his pale face. There was something different about him. The defiant spark she had seen earlier now seemed dull, almost extinguished.

"I didn't come to fight," Marius said calmly. "I came to warn you."

"Warn me about what?" Eveline kept her sword steady, but her heart raced.

"About what is to come," he replied, his voice grave. "The shadows... they are moving. And you're not the only one they want."

Eveline felt ice creep up her spine. "What do you know, Marius? What is happening?"

He took a deep breath, hesitating for a moment before speaking. "You managed to control both light and shadows, but that has also put you on the path of darkness. There are forces more powerful than any of us involved in this. And they are coming, Eveline. For the power you now hold."

The silence that followed was overwhelming. Eveline realized that, for all the answers she had found, more questions were arising. Her fate was now irrevocably tied to that of the shadows, and whatever was coming would be a battle like no other.

"Prepare yourself," Marius said before disappearing into the shadows of the library. "The true enemy is already on their way."
