Chereads / Light a Shadows: Eveline's fate / Chapter 24 - Chapter 24

Chapter 24 - Chapter 24

The night had passed without rest for Eveline. The revelations from the ancient archives still weighed on her mind, and the encounter with Professor Galdar had left a dark impression. She knew he hadn't told the whole truth, but he didn't seem entirely against them either. That ambiguity left her even more unsettled.

With the fencing festival reaching its climax and rumors of conspiracy growing, Eveline felt they were marching towards an inevitable confrontation. But before anything else, she needed answers. Dark alliances with shadow entities were not something she could ignore.

The next morning, Eveline, Alaric, and Aria gathered in the courtyard, away from the curious eyes of the other students. The crowds were preparing for another day of festivities, unaware that a storm was brewing behind the scenes.

"We have to act soon," Alaric said, looking around as if expecting to be overheard. "If Galdar's involved, it means he's probably not the only one."

Aria was pale, her usual enthusiasm replaced by worry. "But what exactly can we do? We're just students. They have power, influence... and now we know they have a pact with something much darker."

Eveline, arms crossed and expression serious, looked at the sky, which was beginning to cloud over with dark, ominous clouds. "We can't confront them directly, but we have something they underestimate: information. We know something big is about to happen, and we have to use that to our advantage."

Aria nodded, still worried. "But where do we even start? And how do we know Galdar or any other professor isn't watching us?"

Before Eveline could answer, a familiar, grave voice sounded behind them. "It seems you're discussing something important."

They turned, and to their surprise, Lord Reginald, the academy's headmaster, was walking towards them, hands behind his back and his expression serious. Eveline felt a chill run down her spine. Was he involved too?

"Lord Reginald," Eveline said, keeping her voice steady. "We were just discussing the festivities."

"Ah, yes, the festival." The headmaster looked towards the competition field, where preparations for the final matches were underway. "Such a glorious event, full of tradition... and at the same time, so vulnerable to invisible threats."

That last phrase made Eveline's heart race. Reginald knew. Perhaps he knew more than she had imagined.

"Don't worry," he continued, his eyes now fixed directly on Eveline. "I'm aware of what's happening behind the scenes at the academy. I believe you've already uncovered part of it yourselves. It's admirable, but dangerous. I don't want you getting more involved than you already are."

"With all due respect, Lord Reginald," Eveline replied, standing tall. "We can't just stand by while something this big is happening. We know there's a threat tied to shadow magic, and it's here, at the academy."

Reginald sighed, his expression hardening. "You're too young to fully understand what's at stake. There are forces far beyond what you can imagine, and interfering with them could come at a great cost."

Alaric stepped forward, his voice filled with determination. "What if we're already involved? If we know too much, we can't just back down."

The headmaster looked at Alaric for a moment before his gaze returned to Eveline. "There's a reason this academy exists. We, the council, do everything we can to protect our students and the kingdom from external... and internal threats. But there's a fine line between protection and sacrifice." He paused, as if considering his next words carefully. "Take my advice and stay on the sidelines of this fight. There's still time for you to step back."

But Eveline felt there was no turning back now. There was something in that conversation that only confirmed her suspicions: the council knew more than they were letting on, and they were likely keeping dangerous secrets from everyone.

"With all due respect, Lord Reginald," Eveline said firmly. "We can't ignore what we know anymore. If there's a real threat to the academy, we want to help fight it. We won't stand on the sidelines."

Reginald studied her for a moment, his expression grim. "You're more stubborn than I expected, Eveline. But remember: curiosity can be dangerous. Be careful of the shadows you awaken."

Without another word, he walked away, leaving Eveline, Alaric, and Aria in silence. His words felt more like a warning than a threat, and it only heightened Eveline's sense of urgency.

"He's hiding something," Alaric said, breaking the silence. "That was clear."

"Yes," Eveline agreed. "But now we know we're not just dealing with an external enemy. There's something inside the academy, something deeply rooted, that needs to be exposed."

"But how are we supposed to find out what it is?" Aria asked. "We can't just confront the council, and it seems like greater forces are watching us."

Eveline looked around, watching the movements of students and professors. Something was brewing, and she knew time was running out. They needed to act before the shadows consumed everything.

"We need to find out who, within the academy, is involved with this dark alliance," Eveline said, her eyes gleaming with determination. "We'll watch the council and the professors closely. Someone will make a mistake, and when they do, we'll be ready."

---

In the following days, Eveline and her friends began to carefully observe the movements of the professors and the council, waiting for any sign that would confirm their suspicions. The tension in the air was palpable, and the fencing festival, which had started as a celebration of skill and competition, now seemed more like a stage for something far darker.

Eveline continued to fight in the arenas, her mind divided between the duels and the silent investigation. Every sword strike, every move on the battlefield, reminded her that the real fight was only beginning—and it wouldn't be decided with swords or simple spells.

One night, as Eveline prepared to sleep, she felt Umbra's presence stronger than ever.

"You're so close, Eveline," the voice whispered in her mind. "But the shadows are not your enemies. They can be your allies, if you know how to use them."

Eveline closed her eyes, fighting the temptation. She knew shadow magic carried dangerous power, but at the same time, she couldn't ignore the fact that it might be the only thing capable of balancing the scales.

"The festival is almost over," Umbra continued. "And with it, the true shadow game will begin."

Eveline opened her eyes, feeling the weight of her decisions approaching. There was no turning back. The confrontation was drawing near—and she would have to face the darkness, both inside and outside herself.
