Athan was finally relieved. He had searched for a room on the top floor in a building. He was currently sitting at the window. He had left the girl seated leaning on the wall. He had untied her and luckily she had gone silent.
This was the best course of action. Though nowhere was safe, staying at one place was the best option. It was true that one could go for weeks without sleep but it was yet to be integrated in the normal lives.
People still slept simply because they had nothing to do at night. She had fallen asleep which he was glad for. She was going through some trauma and sleeping would really help. But who would have thought that even in her sleep she would still snore?
At that moment he made up his mind. He was never gonna try silence a woman. But he could not help but smile when he looked at her and listened to her snores. He sighed once again. He could have counted the times he had smiled the past two years but today, he had smiled more times than he had in the past.
He stared at the starry night. It was the first time he was seeing the stars clearly. In the past, it was impossible due to the effects of the air pollution. He smiled knowing that the planet was finally healing from the effects humanity had imparted it.
He could also sense that there was an increase in the atmospheric Qi. Though, his senses was faint. This was the reason he never Energy cultivated. He cold feel that the air was also clearing. It seemed that the radio activity which had overwhelmed these places was getting eradicated.
Just then, a dark cloud cleared as the moonlight shone lighting the dark surroundings. He had come to observe recently that the demons were usually active during the full moon. As for the reason, he was yet to find out.
But from his guess, it made them stronger. He had once fought a demon during a full moon and it had really put some effort in killing him. This meant there was a secret that the moon held that made them powerful.
This was also one of the reasons that he had decided to take shelter. He was not that arrogant to say that he could kill any demon that came after them. There were powerful demons out there that could kill him.
Though he was not sure, he did not want to find out. He could see the flying demons hovering in the skies. The good thing was that he knew that demons could not track them using their scents.
This meant that unless they made noise, the chances of demons finding them were minimal. Still, he had to keep watch. Not that he could sleep anyway. It would take him hours or a day for him to finally fall into a deep sleep.
He spent the whole night there making plans for the future. Time passed slowly and soon, it was daybreak. Luckily, there were no demons that came. He stood up and went to the girl only to find that she was awake.
"We are leaving," was all he squeezed out from his mouth.
"Now?" She asked but he gave her a glare as she nodded.
"Remember to behave or else I will be forced to do the same thing I did yesterday," Athan said with a serious look.
"Hmph!" The girl scoffed as she threw a glance on the ground.
On the ground were the shredded pieces of the cloths he had used to tie her. She must have gone to great lengths cutting the strips into smallest pieces using the sword. She had a triumphant look as she tried to see if there was a change in expression.
Athan just smiled and picked the sword with ease. The girl could only reminisce how she had spent almost half an hour trying to lift the sword to face up side down. Yet he was picking it as though it was nothing but a normal sword.
"I still have my pants," Athan said as he looked back at her with a smirk.
"You!" She shouted pointing at him her face flushing with anger. She could only follow after him as he walked to the window and...
He jumped... He jumped... She was still trying to digest it. He jumped... She rushed to the window and looked down only to see him falling. She then remembered that she had seen him jump the previous day before he had fought the first orc.
So he had done that on purpose... But was he insane? That height, even as a cultivator, one needed to use some Qi to help slow down their fall yet the guy was not doing so. This was not to mention the fact that as one cultivated, it came with increase in weight.
One can imagine the weight of the sword. If he could lift it with such ease, just how heavy was his body. This did not even account to the increased weight from the sword it brought him. She could only sigh and wait for the impact.
But what made her to heave an even a longer sigh was not the fact that he was not even trying to slow down his fall but the fact he was not even trying to land on his feet! She could only close her eyes when she heard what sounded what sounded like an explosion.
She looked through the window and saw the rumbles he had caused and the crater he had created on the ground. Almost a meter deep and a few meters wide. The sword was protruding outside the crater still in his hand.
She looked and saw he had fallen on his back. From up above, she could not mistake the smile on his lips. She shook her head remembering how he had tied her up to silence her so as not to draw the demons towards them.
Could he not see the commotion he had caused. Even the demons that had gone on retreat during day break must have heard the explosion.
"Oye!" He shouted at her waving his hand from below. "Hurry up before the demons come!" He shouted at her and she could only shake her head.
How could she not understand his actions? Even if he did not shout and used the normal pitch, she could have heard him. Yet he was shouting like a person who did not know where they were.
Shouting as a cultivator was amplified almost ten times. One could imagine the range his voice had reached. This was to mean he was attracting the demons on purpose. Could it be that it was for revenge? She could only chuckle at his pettiness.
She still did not have the courage to jump. But from his actions, did she have a choice? She could only grit her teeth and using the wind element, she jumped and balanced herself as she landed few steps away from the crater.
"Ha!" Athan jumped from the crater and stood next to her. "Beware, the demons will be coming from every direction. So I want you to lead the way back. Our fate is in your hands," Athan said as the girl stared at him with wide angry eyes.
She wanted to refute but she just sighed and accepted. She Started running in the direction the sun was going to rise from. The east. Athan smiled as he started following her.
Yeah. He was doing this on purpose. Being petty was one of the purpose but there was a hidden reason he was doing this. He wanted to keep her distracted. In the face of danger, she was going to first push the thoughts of her dead friends away and focus on saving her life.
This was the best he could do. Also, by doing this, he was forcing her to show him her city. He had decided that he was going to study in the academy her city was at. It did not take long before they could hear the screeches of demon creatures.
The girl looked back and saw them approaching them. Also, in front of them, there was an entire horde coming at them of around 50 flying demons. Not to mention the almost 50 on the ground. She grit her teeth as she racked her brains. So he was doing this to test her too...
Just how had she come into entanglement with a mad man. She did not know what to do in the face of the hundreds of demons approaching them. What was the best course of action.
Something told her that they could take down all of them since she had realized that they were all of the first stage and only few were of the second stage. It was then she came up with a plan.
"Okay, this is what we will do. Run until we are surrounded. After that we are going to kill all the demons. They are all of the First Stage and few are of the Second Stage. Just make sure that when you fight, you do not over exhaust yourself. There may be demons stronger hiding," she said still running.
Athan chuckled as he listened to her plan. Well, since he had given her the mantle, he was just going to follow her. But he decided to pour cold water on her plan.
"How are you going to kill the demons without a weapon," he asked and chuckled once more.
"She stopped and looked at him like she was staring at a fool.
"Of course I am going to use your sword and you are going to use the sword you are carrying on your shoulder." She said as a matter of factly. Athan could not help but chuckle once again
"Can you even use sword?" He asked.
"My main weapon is a sword. I am just practicing on the glaive and spear," she rebutted.
Athan was left with rounded lips. Again, he chuckled.
"What?!" She asked angry and helpless. He was wasting time.
"Nothing," he replied as the demons numbering around 300 all converged around them as they stopped...
