I woke up in a bed that wasn't mine. My head throbbed like I'd spent the night knocking back one too many drinks. I sat up, scanning the room, and found Sarah sitting across from me, staring straight ahead with a frightening intensity.
Her eyes were bloodshot, and she was biting her nails—she hadn't slept at all. The events of last night were still foggy, but within seconds, it all came crashing down on me.
My heart pounded. Had we gotten the invisible girl killed? I swallowed the bile rising in my throat and tried to steady my breathing before I faced Sarah.
"Th-the girl—I mean the invisible... is she, um, is she—"
"Dead," Sarah whispered, snapping her head toward me. I saw the fear in her eyes, a look I wasn't prepared for. Sarah's always been the level-headed one, but now… this wasn't the Sarah I knew. And I hoped I'd never see her like this again.
