Chapter 14 - • A Renewed Nation

Continent: Aostra

Country: Triosa

Fraction : Centre-West

Date: 49/5/331

Point of view - Goldora

Three days passed, Avaloria still did not make his move. The reply to the letter I sent returned, the ruler accepted my request, but not that of signing an alliance, only to see me, if we then considered it necessary, we would have signed it when we met. Could I have been quiet to go to Shiitia? I couldn't have known, so I would have brought the League with me in case of receiving a sudden attack, without being to much near them, though, otherwise they would have identified us as hostile. In the meantime, was launched an agrarian reform: a cash compensation for farmers who grew legumes, wheat, cereals, fruit or vegetables. I also let the food prices be reduced. In this way none of them would lose money, but only the state, which had accumulated too much. The economy would be back on track, hoping that famine would end. It would not have been a short process, but certainly a good starting point. Jule and Relm, two other guards, were appointed by me as "Consuls of the Economy". They would collect the taxes (which I reduced, even if only slightly) and reward the farmers. In addition, the uninhabited areas of the nation would be worked so that, given to the discharged war veterans, they could be made available to produce as much food as possible. Meanwhile, I had the town cleaned of the thousands of deaths from the civil uprising. Great pits were dug outside the walls, into which we threw the corpses. The names of each, or at least those we could find, were written in symbol of memory on a large stone that served as a common tomb. Later, we made the houses, now uninhabited, pseudo-barracks for soldiers of our army. In this way, the economic capital of Triosa, where the revolt took place, became a real operational center of the army. However, this process was not yet finished, and my men worked hard to make it work for the best. Furthermore, I established three fundamental rights and a duty for every citizen:

Right to work

Right to private property

Right to freedom

Duty to obey the orders of the king and his officials.

If people did not respect even one of these, they would be drafted into the army and, if not cooperating, would be imprisoned for life.

Then I declared my sister Eimin viceroy and Lord Bryce her second, so that when I had to go to Shiitia, they would rule in my place. Then, I promised a very high sum of money to those who were drafted in the army, so that their numbers would grow.

No misunderstanding, it was not my intention to help these people, nor be glorified, if I was doing this, it was for Eimin.

Point of view - Eimin

Since my brother became king of Triosa, he didn't spend much time at home. He was often in the League's Operations Centre to deal with legal matters, of which I understood nothing. If not alone, I spent my time with Lord Bryce, which was good for my culture. I began to read fluently and learn more and more courtly terms. When he was also busy in his research, I would recommend, by him, some books to read. For example, I recently started a work in 17 small volumes, called "Leviathan Dragon", where the author analyzes the figure of the sovereign as a Leviathan, whose body is the people, and the head is the ruler, symbolically superior. The adjective "Dragon" is added because it is negatively described, as a tyrant, associated with the winged figure. But I did not want to stop at just reading, it would be like learning to never act. I was going to write a book, "The Great Aostran War" could have been the title? I would have reported every fact told about the war so that the mistakes of the past could not be repeated. Was it really right to wage war for personal gain? Lord Bryce, as I was, was against the use of weapons, and therefore war, we knew that it was useless, and only fools would decide to take it. Was this what I did not understand about my brother, he was a really clever person, was it possible that he had not thought about it for a second?

Also, when we met the man who was generating fire, I didn't understand how he did it, because I was too scared. But how could that be? Sorcery should only exist in fantasy books, even Lord Bryce could not believe it, yet I saw it with my own eyes. Could he not be a human?

I wasn't sure that its possibilities were limited to the generation of fire. That he could go beyond? And above all, where did it come from? What did he want from my brother? He was definitely stronger than him, so I was afraid to send him around alone, but there wasn't much I could do about it. As I laid the third volume of Leviathan Dragon on the shelf, I heard the door slam.

«Brother, you are back.»

«Hi, Eimin. Is dinner ready?» He asked me.

«Yes, the bread is on the table and the vegetables are cut... Brother, why do we continue to eat bread if you are the king?» I asked genuinely.

It took some time to work out the answer.

«The biggest mistake for a monarch is to think that the money of the state belongs to him. With that money I need to reward people who work and ensure a development of the economy. As my job is to administer, I have no right to eat like a god. I'm sorry Eimin, but a king does not grant wishes...» He answered me. He seemed sad, was afraid he would let me down? No, he was going to tell me something that would make me sad.

«Eimin, I must leave again tomorrow. My goal is to sign a pact with Shiitia, so I will meet their ruler at his court. As viceroy, you will make the decisions. Let Lord Bryce help you.» He said without looking me in the eyes.

«Brother, really? Aren't you afraid to go to Shiitia? What if that man who uses sorcery should show up?»

«If I live in fear that he might come at any moment, I would not live. But I will not go alone, there will be members of the League.» He replied.

«Understood.»

We remained silent until we went to sleep.
