Chapter 5 - • The Beginning of the War

Continent: Aostra

Country: Frontier - Cromelia, Nordalìa

Date: 37/5/331

After many hours of travel we stopped about ten kilometers from the frontier. The nation had forbidden the access to the war zone, so we could not go on in a carriage. We arrived shortly after, walking, a thousand meters away from one of the extremes of the battlefield. With a quick calculation, we had approximated the range of the fight. That distance would keep us safe.

We noticed the army of Cromelia, deployed, waiting to receive the attack of that Avalorian. We obviously decided to arrive before the battle began, so that we could better analyze the situation. Camped in that position, we waited for the arrival of the Avalorian army. Waiting a couple of hours, we heard the stomping of the soil by horse clogs and heavy armor. We were about to witness the beginning of war.

«Lunim, how do you think the two armies are organized?» I asked him in the heat of battle. In these cases, having an overview is important.

«The Avalorians seem to be deployed in a 100x200 rectangle.

The Cromelians, on the other hand, seem to be in a 150x400 triangle, where the numbers are base and height.» He answered me quickly. These were not precise figures, but very close to reality.

«I see, so they sent about 20,000 and 30,000 warriors? At this point I fear that Nordalia may come to the rescue with part of his army.» I said. Thinking for a moment, the Cromelians had deployed an army larger than Avaloria, so it would certainly react.

«It is probable, but not certain.» Lunim replied.

More hours passed. The armies seemed to lack strategy. I was sure that this fight would not last for more than a day.

«With this speed of killing, we will be on the field very soon.» I said. I had not yet entered the battle mentality, but this did not scare me. My goal was greater than my fear.

He looked at me with a convinced expression, we were both ready.

Cromelia seemed to have a clear advantage. By now they had been reduced to 1,000 against 3,000. The result, however, was not yet decided. The final comeback has always existed, and this could have been the case.

«Goldora?» Lunim looked at me, putting on his helmet.

«Yes, it's time.» I replied by doing the same, and holding my big piece of steel.

Our armor was made similar to that of Cromelia, so we would not receive attacks from them. We ran the thousand meters that separated us from the battle. I immediately began to kill in the ranks of Avaloria to annihilate them. They seemed confused, did not expect the enemy army to have someone so powerful. I stood near Lunim, no one could get close to us, together we were unbeatable. In the heat of the moment, we felt another violent walk. The army of Nordalia had been called to help. Just at that moment, when I least wanted it, I saw my sister's face.

«Eimin.» I stammered in panic. Seeing my sister in a battlefield, my worst nightmare had materialized before my eyes.

«Hi, brother, do you need some help?» he answered me in a surprisingly calm tone.

Quickly I stood in front of her, Lunim behind. I took off my helmet and put it on my sister's face.

«Why are you here?»

«I have come to help you. I am sure that it is not to save Avaloria your goal. I am sure that it is much more noble. That's why I decided to help you.» She replied. I couldn't believe it. My goal was to help her by protecting her, and she was helping me? I didn't know what to do in that situation. Too many things were happening one after the other without giving me a break.

Cromelians and Avalorians started attacking us, thinking we had both made an alliance with the enemy, Eimin's armor was not like any army. With my strength, I took a corpse of Cromelia's army and my sister, dragging them away from the center of the action, asking Lunim to cover us. We hid behind a rock. I stripped the corpse and Eimin. Then I put on her the cromelian armor, and I took her helmet.

«Go as far away as you can... But those swords... When did you take them? They have that symbol.» I asked her even more incredulous. When I would finish the creation of any weapon, I used to carve a mark, that of my forge. I recognized it, but at the time I did not understand how they got into her hands.

«Brother, there is no time to explain, and you know this. Please let me fight.» She asked me insistently.

«Get out of here.»

I began to move away, she, instead, to follow me. In the middle of the battle there was still Lunim, and a great enemy army was coming, I could not leave him alone, but I couldn't leave Eimin alone either, I knew she wouldn't go away, so I said to her:

«Stand by me no matter what happens. Use your swords only to defend yourself, do not attack, and cover every spot where you can see your body, make yourself as covered as possible.»

At least in this situation I would have defended her at all costs. Now I didn't care to fight Avaloria, I just wanted her to come out alive.

We joined Lunim.

«Goldora, there seem to be at least 3,000 men. Now we are at a disadvantage. What shall we do with Eimin?»

He also knew that the situation was not in our favor. But he managed to keep his rationality, contrary to what I had done when I saw Eimin.

«Help me protect her. Meanwhile attack as we have done so far, if they could not approach us, they will not be able to approach her.» It was the only thing that came to mind.

«All right. Eimin, stand by us.» said Lunim, turning to my plan.

The enemy battalion of rescue came attacking us. They were many and full forces. Lunim and I couldn't stay close, but I could hold my sister. Since he was left alone when I took Eimin away just before, the enemies thought that Lunim was stronger than me, so many fought him. He was also a first-rate soldier, but not as good as me, so he had more difficulty. While fighting I was frightened by possible deadly blows coming from the enemy.

I had too much things in my head to think about. My sister, Lunim, the enemies... I turned around, not seeing Eimin. I tried to avoid the fight to find her, but I couldn't. I turned to Lunim. I saw her fighting alongside him.

The way she used her swords seemed to be the result of years and years of training. While the right sword parried the attacks, the left swung to make hits that broke the opposing guards. She could not dodge the shots because of the heaviness of the weapons, but thanks to their great compactness was able to block those opponents and counter attack much more powerful. Together with Lunim, who was more accustomed to defense than attack, they managed to shield each shot and send it back to the sender. By joining forces, they reached my level, but with a much more critical mind. I fought for my sister, but it seemed she could do it herself.

During the fight I was not hit once, the same thing was true for my sister and my battle partner, until:

«Goldora, we are now a couple of thousand men summing up the two armies, it's time to go.» The strategist told me. Our goal was achieved, to make sure that a large Avalorian army did not advance beyond the borders. I nodded, taking my sister by the hand. We fled a few miles away, where we had taken refuge just before. The bags, where we had taken our helmets and armor during the journey to hide them, were still there. We put everything inside. After the euphoria, I asked Eimin to explain the situation.

«Just what I said before, I just wanted to help you.» She told me. I was incredulous. Not that any other answer could have had a different impact.

«You wanted to help me by risking your life? Do you know how strong the armies of Avaloria and Cromelia are compared to a young girl?» I answered not paying attention to my irrational impulse. I was getting angry with the one I wanted to protect.

«Brother, I am no longer a defenceless young girl. All this time I have been training. My sword skills are almost perfect, I fought well.» She answered more and more offended.

«That's not what I meant. Do you know how easy it is to lose your life in war? It's not a game, and the strongest does not always win.»

She seemed sad to me as I spoke but, for the dynamics of the situation, it was fine.
