Kazuo's eyes snapped open and jolted upright. The room was already cloaked in darkness and the only source of light came from a sliver of moonlight peeking through the small window. He blinked, trying to shake off the heavy fog of sleep that still clung to him.
But then, a sound pierced through the stillness of the night—a howl of a wolf. He knew what it meant. They were here.
"Amélie?" he whispered, scanning the room. His gaze landed on her form, curled up against the wall. He crept over, gently shaking her shoulder. "Hey. Wake up."
Amélie stirred, her eyes fluttering open. "Huh? What's wrong?"
"We gotta move," Kazuo said, already on his feet and grabbing his backpack. "It's started."
"What time is it?" Amélie asked, stretching.
Kazuo zipped up his pack and slung it over his shoulder. "No clue, but the shit show's kicking off. We can't stay put."
Another howl ripped through the air, closer this time before gunfire erupted outside.
