Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Dead on Arrival

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhh"

Shivers start to spread into her very bones.

As Leni screams, she begins to make her way out to escape from being eaten alive by the ghoul in front of her.

She was about to crawl her way out from under the bed when the ghoul took hold of her left thigh, trying to prevent her from escaping.

Luckily for her, she remembers putting her scissors in the base drawer of her desk.

She used the scissors to stab the ghoul's severely wounded head, giving her enough time to escape.

[A minute earlier]

"Honey, please take care of our Leni. I can't lose you both, remember?"

"What? Don't tell me..."

"Yes, I'm going outside to find our Larry."

"But it's too dangerous..."

"As you said, every second counts. The more we do nothing, the smaller our son's chances of survival grow."

Benjamin takes his long cotton coat, grabs some knives from the kitchen, and tries to pack his bag when suddenly a cellphone rings from his telephone number.

"Hello, is this perhaps the father of Larry Croft?"

When Matilda hears her son's name across her phone, she grabs the phone from her husband and starts to ask questions.

"Is our Larry with you, Sir?"

"Is he safe?"

"Can you let me speak to him, please?"

As Matilda grabs his phone, Benjamin feels a bad premonition from the tone of the caller's voice.

"Matilda, can you let me answer the phone? Maybe the caller is afraid to respond when you keep barraging him with nonstop questions."

"But Ben..."

"No buts, Matilda. Hand me over the phone right now."

The look in Benjamin's eyes is serious, making Matilda snap out of her momentary delusion.

"Hey, how could we explain to them that their son is no longer..."

"Psssh."

The other nurse shuts her up before Larry's parents misunderstand anything.

After the ambulance arrives at the nearest hospital, they find out that all the rooms are occupied with many patients, and incoming patients are lined up for log-in registration.

The whole hospital ward is in a state of dilemma as there aren't enough surgeons present to operate on every single one of them.

Those that died are directly delivered into purgatory, as the forensic doctors are also filled with critical patients.

Larry's deceased body is carried to where dead bodies are piled up.

Even purgatory is full of recently killed victims of the dungeon outbreak.

The two nurses in charge ask the drivers to find out the identity of the dead body, and it takes a while for them to get full information about Larry.

"Hey Joe, can you contact his parents to inform them about their son and also express our condolences for the deceased?"

"Yeah, sure, but can you answer it instead? I have a phobia of getting screamed at."

"Hahaha, it's not like they're going to scream at us the moment they answer the phone call."

But all their self-reassurance becomes invalid when they hear Matilda's constant screams. What will she do when she finally finds out about her son's current situation?

The owner of the phone grins at the one holding his phone, dealing with Larry's parents. The look in his eyes seems to mock, 'See? I told ya.'

Nobody notices that inside purgatory, a breathing corpse's heart begins to beat at a normal rate while its injuries are being healed as if they weren't there in the first place.

Once Matilda hands over her phone to Benjamin.

In order to stabilize the situation, Benjamin moves to a separate room away from his wife.

"Umm, sir? I apologize for earlier; it was my wife you were speaking to. You must have freaked out; sorry for that."

"Of course, no worries. It's a normal reaction. We're already used to it."

"Okay, can we get back to what you were about to say earlier?"

Benjamin asks to clarify his nervous tension.

"Okay, but I hope you can be prepared for what I am about to say because..."

When the man calling is about to notify about Larry, his colleague whispers into his ear, greatly shocking him.

'What? His son is still alive in purgatory?'

"Because of what?"

"What!?"

"Sorry?"

"Umm, sir, your son was hit by a truck not long ago and...."

The caller explains every single thing that happened from the moment they rescued Larry to the moment they rushed into a traffic jam along the road, which forced them to find another route.

"What's Larry's condition now, sir?"

"For now, we have already stabilized his condition, but strangely we cannot find any traces of scars or previous wounds he got from his truck accident."

"So which hospital did you bring my son to?"

"Umm, almost every hospital is full now, sir. That's why we brought him here... in purgatory."

"Excuse me? Could you clarify that again?"

"I said your son was brought into purgatory."

"I thought you said my son is still alive. Then out of all places, why is he in such a place?"

"No, sir, at first we didn't mean for your son to be sent here. It's because when we declared him dead on arrival, he was brought into purgatory..."

It took a long explanation for Benjamin to control his rage.

'Thank goodness he's alive; at least he survived.'

"Ahhhhhhhh"

"Leni?"

"Mon-monster help."

Benjamin then rushed his way into Leni's room when he found his daughter shivering in fear, holding the doorknob.

"Leni, why are you in this state? What happened?"

"Dad, daddy, there's a monster inside."

"How did a monster manage to sneak its way into our house?"

"I'm sorry, it's my fault, huhuhu. I forgot to finish the task I was supposed to do."

"Don't blame yourself, sweetheart. I got this."

Benjamin hurried to grab a knife from the kitchen.

"Leni, hide in our bedroom. Don't come out until I say so, understand?"

"Yes, I promise."

After everything was ready, Benjamin opened Leni's bedroom, but shock overcame him when three ghouls started ambushing him upfront.
