"So what's her name? " I asked Tobias. We were at our respective desks reading and finishing up homework. "You just want to know so can make fun of me.," "Ohh come on I will not make fun of you just because you find the girl interesting." The look he gave me told me he wasn't convinced, he glared a bit more before sighing " Rebecca Semorre, that's her name. I don't want to hear anything from you concerning her." "Ohh please Tobias I'm mature enough to mind my business. Though I must admit you have good taste." I glanced at him watching his ears go red in embarrassment. "So you approve of her then." I raised a brow at that , "Of course I approve, you two look like you would make a wonderful couple. Why did you ever think I wouldn't approve, it's your life my opinion shouldn't matter." "No matter get back to your reading "
All this time I was flipping the pages of an old textbook barely spending more than 5 seconds on a page. At first Tobias scolded me for my reading habit, he thought I was aimlessly turning the page to pass it off as reading. Eventually he grew to realize that I processed much faster than humanly possible, though he still had doubts. 'Hmm I'll have to visit the library tomorrow for some more. Mr Milton won't be happy to see me.'
Due to my circumstances I had to visit the library every 2 to 3 days to borrow a fresh supply of books. I returned the previous set of books and borrowed some more, Mr Milton was always livid when he saw me. Like Tobias he thought I took books for granted and made fun of education. It was one of the reasons I stopped reading at the library and took the books home instead, he didn't have a valid reason to stop me so our relationship became strained. Pissing off the librarian was the last thing I had in mind, but when you think about it from his perspective his reasoning is solid.
After eating dinner, with the others and playing a few board games with the younger ones bed time has finally arrived. But while I wished them good night I wouldn't be getting any proper rest this night. Sleep was also a part of my training, as I laid on my bed I concentrated lifting my body a few inches above the bed, suspended by nothing other than my mind. This was how I slept, it was funny really, I couldn't really call it sleep, due to the constant use I had to keep a portion of my mind reserved for the strenuous exercise while another portion engaged in sleep. It worked well, the only side effect was the increased chance of reaching exhaustion, but that was mitigated by having my mind work in shifts. I did all this while lifting weights I scattered all over the orphanage well concealed lest they give the children a horrible freight.
I knew this level of strain was harmful and very dangerous but I couldn't afford to slack off. My veil was spread throughout the house keeping track of the tiniest movements, ready to defend incase any unidentified person ever decided to break in. I also had knives littered around mostly within the walls, if anyone had the balls to sneak in they would have holes in them before they could take a second step.
'Lily is still having nightmares', one benefit of my constant surveillance was the ability to track the sleeping patterns and nighty activities that took place. I knew about John's constant visit to the toilet, William's visit to his secret snack cabinet, Lily's tossing over her nightmares and much more. Lily was one of the newest additions we had to the orphanage, she witnessed her parents get killed in a home invasion and had been left deeply scared by it. Her psyche was fragile and she revisits the memory in her dreams. There is nothing I could do for her I wasn't the best at conversing these things.
Me and Tobias were in our way back from school. We walked the way back instead of taking the bus to save costs besides we liked the walk home. It was good exercise and it gave us time to clear our minds.
'Today is Wednesday. I guess I'll have to stop by at the shop.' "ill leave you here Tobias"
"Alright I'll see you in the evening." He said as he continued on while I took a left turn at the junction. I worked a part time job at a small cafe down the street. Tobias did the same, the legal age to get a part time job was 16, tobais and I started working soon after our birthdays. We did it to help the orphanage out and also have a little extra money to spend, we weren't forced to do so but we felt responsible. In fact it was common tradition to get a job when you turned 16 and to give at least 50% of your paycheck, it was an unspoken rule we had, the others did the same for us when they turned 16.
The cafe was beautiful it gave off a warm cozy feeling when you stepped inside. Most people came in just to sit down after a long day of work and relax. The reason for the lovely vibe was the more lovely Mrs Alba.
"Good evening Ma'am" "ohh Luke is that you, how was your day"Mrs Alba replied while serving a customer a cup of coffee. "It was fine ma'am" I said then proceeded to the back to change into my apron.
At first my only job was to clean tables and serve customers when I started a few months back, but I was able to convince Mrs Alba to give me kitchen duty. I showcased my higher learning abilities and learned all the recipes within 3 days. Since then it's been me at the back while Mrs Alba took the front. 'it suits her, her ability to interact and relate with people are outstanding even by my standards.'. It one of the reasons this place gets so much business even though it wasn't on a popular street like most other cafes.
'Let's get this started ' and with that thought all the utensils I would need rose from their positions and began floating around the kitchen performing various tasks. Mrs Alba always found it astonishing, I was able to produce more orders and pastries in a single hour than humanly possible, though I tried not to overdo it.
I was fast. I also used my senses to listen in on the orders as soon as they were spoken out, by the time Mrs Alba delivered the orders to the kitchen window I had them out 3 seconds later. We had attained a smooth dynamic, she pleased the costumers and I pumped out the food. She learned not to question it and I kept her out the kitchen whenever I started using my ability.
"Welcome to Sigfiend Cafe, have a seat. What would you guys like to order" immediately the bell rang and Mrs Alba's words came out I froze. He was here, why was he here!? That cold sicking feeling spread across my being in the split second it took me to pull back my veil. The veil was an extension of myself and any time it touched him it was like I was exposed before a being so wrong and perverse that I couldn't breathe properly.Jonathan and his friends were here, I don't why but I doubt it was a coincidence.
"I'll have an iced latte and red bean cakes." "I'll have an Americano and a slice of chocolate cake" " An iced tea with cupcakes for me" "milk coffee and ice cream" there were 5 of them in total and they all ordered except Jonathan. From my vantage point in the kitchen I saw the long hard look he gave Mrs Alba, she was getting unnerved by his gaze. "I'll have a cup of black coffee and chocolate muffins." He finally replied, after one of his friends gave him an awkward look.
"Alright your orders will be ready in a minute." Mrs Alba left their table trying to keep her countenance calm, but I saw her shiver a little as she walked back to the kitchen.
"Here are the orders Luke." She passed me the note but still had her head down. Mrs Alba was many things, one of those being professional she didn't want me to see the fear in her eyes but her body language gave her away.
'That's it I'm tired of this bullshit. I'll have to confront Jonathan sooner than expected' I deliberated a confrontation for some time now but seemed it would happen sooner than expected. He'd crossed the line, ignoring my wishes to be left alone was one thing but scaring my employer was another.
