Emma's POV
After shrugging my shoulders, I left Natasha and Barton, even though I was really curious about what kind of personality Barton had and whether Natasha was the one who lived through World War II or just the movie version.
Following Fury, we went to another room not far away. Fury used a simple fingerprint and eye scan before the door opened.
The room inside was plain and simple, with a table that had the SHIELD logo at the center, a computer, and a few other things, along with two chairs.
'Maybe because it's not the SHIELD Trident Base, where things should be high-end?' I thought before being pulled out of my thoughts by what Fury said.
He said, "I talked about your request to the World Security Council, and they agreed, but, well, they added some conditions."
Now he had all of my attention, and to be honest, I admit that what he said had already ruined the good mood I was in before.
But well, the big deal wasn't me leaving this room in a fit of rage. Sure, I wanted the World Security Council's help to make my school more legitimate, but that didn't mean I didn't have other ways.
I could just wait until Tony was poisoned by the palladium, heal him to earn his favor and money, or better yet, I could simply heal some U.S. government politicians. I'm sure they'd be more than happy to help me. The World Security Council isn't that omnipotent, after all.
All these thoughts passed in a fraction of a second, so I replied to Fury with a simple, "Oh?"
I only showed just enough curiosity to make it seem like I didn't care. I'm sure my reaction wasn't what he expected, even though he was trying to stay calm. I could hear his heartbeat change, though it was minimal, since he seemed able to control it.
He tried to reassure me by saying, "Don't worry, it's not much of a big deal. But the World Security Council wants to ensure that your school won't cause trouble. They want to send people to supervise you and assess your actions. There are also things like wanting all the information about your school and more."
I almost laughed out loud at what he said, assessing me? This is the problem with those people. Once you show them your willingness to cooperate, they start testing your limits.
Even Charles, who's more of a dove, wouldn't give this kind of information to the U.S. government, let alone the World Security Council, and they expect me to do it.
This time, I was seriously irritated, not like when I first met Fury and was acting, but genuinely angry. Did these people really expect me to be their dog?
I stared at Fury, his one eye meeting mine, before I said, "Look, Director Fury, as someone who has worked in the military, what I hate most is people playing politics with everything."
"I just want to create a school where people with superpowers can have a childhood, even if it's different from others, not a place to create lab rats or experiment subjects for someone."
Yes, I may want to create the school because of the system, but teaching is something I've been doing since my last life, just because I wanted to give kids who are abandoned by the world, like I was, a place.
If it means I'm just gathering experiment subjects for some people, I would never accept it.
I stood up and said to Fury, "This school project is me giving a little bit of my trust to you and your people, with my power. But I can still do it without your help. It seems you're about to let me down."
"This mission, I'm doing it, but know this: I want a definite answer after. If not, I will no longer cooperate with SHIELD but with the U.S. government. And if they also refuse, I don't doubt there are many governments willing to work with me."
Without waiting for his response, I turned around and left. Fortunately, the door opened without needing checks like when we entered, or I would have been embarrassed.
I walked the same way we had come until I returned to the first room. Natasha and Barton were still there, along with Coulson, but now there were others in the room, especially one person I least wanted to see because of my bias.
But of course, I didn't show any dislike on my face. I walked towards another person who wasn't there when I first arrived, an acquaintance.
With the earlier anger starting to subside, or maybe it was just emotional control, I said in a happy tone, "Ororo? What a surprise! I didn't expect to see you here."
She opened her arms to give me a hug before replying, "Oh? But I'm not so surprised to see you here, to be honest. As you can see, I'm here with Logan, representing the X-Men."
I could hear the disgust in her tone. Obviously, she wasn't willing to work for anything related to the government, even if it was technically the World Security Council.
I could only sigh helplessly, understanding the situation of the two, but before I could comfort Ororo, someone interrupted me.
It was Skye, and she said, "Hi, Emma. Long time no see, though I must say I'm uncomfortable here alone, despite it being my base."
I nodded at her. There were three groups in the room: Natasha and Barton, the guy I hate with his band, and then Logan with Ororo.
Skye was there alone, which surprised me. Since she's from SHIELD, shouldn't she normally be in the same group as Natasha and Barton? But then again, I don't know much about the world I'm in and can only learn about their relationships later.
Unlike Ororo, I wasn't familiar enough with Skye, so we just shook hands without hugging before I replied, "Oh, what makes you so uncomfortable, even in your own base?"
