Chloe's Point of View
I walked back inside the office, my heart and mind still mangled from my run-in with Ethan. Seeing him again was like stirring the ashes of a fire that had long since gone out inside me. But I couldn't let it dwell on me-not now, with everything else hanging over me.
I rushed towards my desk, hoping that Jonathan hadn't noticed how long it took me to get back. But as soon as I walked into the open work space, I felt the tension emanating from his office. Of course he had noticed. My heart sank inside of me.
And as if on cue, Jonathan emerged from his office, his face a mask of barely-contained fury. His sharp eyes immediately latched on to me, making me feel like I was being caught at something bad.
"You're late," he growled in a low, cold voice.
I swallowed hard to steady my nerves. "I'm sorry. I lost track of time."
