Chapter 40 - In To The Void

The darkness of space enveloped Luka and Kaela as they left the station behind, the distant stars glittering like shards of ice against the black canvas of the void. Luka felt the familiar hum of *Vigil* as its systems came to life, the connection between him and the machine as strong as ever.

But now, there was something more—an awareness of the Aether flowing through the mecha, a power that had been growing ever since they started on this path.

Kaela's voice came through the comms, calm but alert. "We're clear of the station's sensors. Heading toward the first set of coordinates Lynel gave us."

Luka nodded, his grip on the controls tightening. "Good. Let's keep low and stay off the main routes. We don't want to draw any attention."

They moved in silence for a while, navigating through the asteroid fields and debris that littered the uncharted regions of space. The hidden routes they were using were dangerous—filled with unstable gravity wells, rogue asteroids, and pirate hideouts—but they were also the best way to avoid the council's patrols.

As they flew, Luka couldn't help but admire Kaela's draconic mecha flying just ahead of him. The sleek, powerful design of the machine mirrored Kaela's own grace and strength. Her mecha's name came to him in a flash, a fitting tribute to its ferocity and elegance.

"Your mecha needs a name," Luka said suddenly, breaking the silence.

Kaela's laughter crackled through the comms. "What, just now figuring that out?"

Luka grinned. "It's long overdue. I was thinking *Aetheris*—it fits the whole draconic, graceful, and deadly vibe you've got going."

Kaela was quiet for a moment before her voice came back, softer this time. "*Aetheris*, huh? I like it. Has a nice ring to it."

Luka smiled. "Good. Now, let's see if *Aetheris* can keep up with *Vigil*."

Kaela's smirk was almost audible. "Oh, is that a challenge?"

"Always."

The two of them continued their flight, Luka feeling a sense of calm wash over him despite the dangers lurking in the unknown space ahead. Kaela had become more than just a partner in battle—she was his anchor, someone who understood him in ways no one else had. As they flew side by side, the bond between them felt unbreakable.

But as the stars blurred past, Luka's thoughts drifted toward what lay ahead. The ruins. The Aether. The council's plans. He knew they were racing against time. If the council got to the ruins first or figured out how to harness the Aether's full power, it would spell disaster not just for him and Kaela, but for the entire galaxy.

They needed to stay ahead. They needed to find the answers before the council did.

Hours later, they reached the outer edge of the uncharted region. The star maps grew thinner here, and the space around them felt different—more dangerous, more unpredictable. The usual pathways of light and gravity seemed to twist and warp, as if the very fabric of space was unstable in this area.

"This place gives me the creeps," Kaela muttered, her voice filled with unease. "It's like space itself doesn't know what it's doing."

Luka nodded, understanding the feeling. "The Aether's presence is stronger here. It's warping the environment."

Kaela's voice softened. "Do you feel it more? *Vigil*, I mean."

Luka took a deep breath, focusing on the sensation that had been building ever since they entered this part of space. There was a pulsing energy flowing through him, through *Vigil*—something ancient, something powerful. It wasn't overwhelming, but it was there, waiting to be unlocked.

"Yeah," Luka said quietly. "It's stronger here. Almost like… the Aether is calling to us."

Kaela didn't respond, but Luka could sense her worry through the silence. The power of the Aether was a mystery even to them, and the deeper they ventured into the uncharted regions, the more dangerous it became. But they had come this far, and there was no turning back now.

As they continued forward, a cluster of dark, looming shapes appeared on the edge of their scanners. Luka narrowed his eyes, focusing on the incoming readings.

"Looks like we've got company," he muttered, adjusting *Vigil*'s trajectory.

Kaela glanced at her HUD. "Pirates, maybe? This is prime territory for smugglers."

The shapes grew clearer as they approached—a small fleet of heavily armed ships and a few mechas patrolling the area. Luka felt a surge of tension. Whoever they were, they weren't friendly.

"We're outnumbered," Luka said, his tone grim. "But we can't turn back now."

Kaela's voice was steady but firm. "We fight."

Luka grinned. "You took the words right out of my mouth."

They sped toward the incoming ships, *Vigil* and *Aetheris* cutting through the void with deadly precision. As they neared the pirate fleet, the ships opened fire, missiles and energy blasts lighting up the darkness. Luka's hands moved instinctively, guiding *Vigil* through the incoming fire with fluid, practiced movements.

"Take out their weapons first," Luka ordered over the comms, his voice calm despite the chaos.

Kaela dove in, *Aetheris* weaving through the ships with impossible speed. Her claws glowed with energy as she slashed through the side of one of the lead ships, disabling its main cannon with a single strike. The ship veered off course, smoke pouring from its hull.

Luka followed up with a barrage of energy blasts from *Vigil*'s cannon, tearing through the next ship's engines and sending it spiraling into the void. The pirate mechas scrambled to respond, but they were outmatched. *Vigil* and *Aetheris* moved like predators, cutting through the enemy with ruthless efficiency.

"Nice work," Luka said, watching as the remaining pirate ships tried to retreat.

Kaela's laughter echoed over the comms. "Told you *Aetheris* could keep up."

The fight was over quickly, the pirate fleet scattered and broken. Luka took a moment to catch his breath, the adrenaline still rushing through his veins. But as the last of the ships disappeared into the distance, a new alert flashed on his HUD.

"We've got another signal," Luka said, his tone suddenly serious. "It's coming from deeper in the uncharted zone."

Kaela's voice softened, the excitement from the fight fading. "That's it, isn't it? The ruins."

Luka nodded, his gaze fixed on the incoming signal. "It has to be."

They flew toward the signal, the space around them growing darker and more distorted as they neared their destination. The Aether's presence was palpable now, pulsing through the void like a living force. Luka could feel it deep within him, calling to him, urging him forward.

As they approached, the ruins finally came into view—a massive structure, ancient and crumbling, floating in the void like a forgotten relic. The architecture was unlike anything Luka had ever seen, its design both alien and eerily familiar. And at the heart of the ruins, a glowing Aether crystal, larger than anything Luka could have imagined, pulsed with raw, untapped power.

"This is it," Luka whispered, awe filling his voice. "The source of the Aether."

Kaela's voice was barely audible over the comms. "We found it."

But even as they stared at the ruins, Luka felt a deep, unsettling presence at the edge of his mind. The Aether wasn't the only thing waiting for them here.
