Chapter 42 - Treading On Power

The light from the Aether crystal pulsed softly, casting the chamber in an otherworldly glow as Luka stood, his thoughts reeling from the encounter with the Keeper. The Aether's power thrummed in the air around him, and his connection to *Vigil* felt more potent than ever, as if every breath he took was in rhythm with the mecha's energy.

Kaela approached him cautiously, her eyes searching his face for answers. "You're serious? You actually spoke to something in the Aether?"

Luka nodded, still trying to wrap his mind around what had just happened. "Yeah. The Keeper of the Aether. It said *Vigil* and I were chosen—that the council's trying to control something they don't understand."

Kaela frowned, crossing her arms as she glanced at the pulsing crystal in the center of the chamber. "And it just decided to give you a pep talk? What does it expect you to do with all this?"

Luka sighed, running a hand through his white hair. "I have no idea. But whatever it is, it's clear that the Aether is dangerous—if the council gets their hands on this power, they'll tear the galaxy apart."

Kaela paced the room, her wings flickering faintly with energy as she processed what he was saying. "So, what's the plan? You're supposed to control the Aether somehow? How do you even start with something like that?"

Luka was quiet for a moment, his mind racing. The Keeper had said that he and *Vigil* were connected to the Aether in ways no one else could be. But what did that really mean? How could he harness such immense power without being overwhelmed by it?

"The Keeper said I need to learn how to channel the Aether through *Vigil*," Luka muttered, his gaze fixed on the crystal. "But I don't know how. This isn't something you just figure out on your own."

Kaela stopped pacing, her sharp gaze locking on him. "You've already been using the Aether without knowing it. Maybe it's not about learning how to use it—it's about trusting your connection to it."

Luka met her eyes, a spark of understanding dawning in his mind. She was right. He had been tapping into the Aether's power from the beginning, ever since he first piloted *Vigil*. It had always been there, just beneath the surface, waiting for him to unlock it. The challenge wasn't about finding the power—it was about accepting it and learning to control it.

"We've got no choice but to figure this out," Luka said, determination hardening his voice. "The council's not going to stop, and if we don't learn to use the Aether first, we're done."

Kaela gave him a small nod of approval, her expression serious. "So, what's our next move? The council's probably on their way here by now."

Luka glanced at the crystal one more time before turning to Kaela. "We need to get out of here, but we can't leave this place behind. The council can't get their hands on the Aether—if they do, everything we've fought for will be for nothing."

Kaela's eyes flicked toward the crystal, her brow furrowing. "Destroy it?"

Luka hesitated. The crystal was the source of the Aether, a power that had existed long before they had ever known about it. Destroying it could be the only way to keep it from falling into the wrong hands, but it could also mean losing the one thing that could help them stop the council.

"We can't destroy it," Luka said, shaking his head. "Not yet. There's too much we don't know. If the council has a way to harness the Aether, we need to figure out how they're doing it."

Kaela stepped closer, her voice low. "Then we move. Get out of here, regroup, and figure out our next step before they catch up."

Luka nodded. "Let's go."

As they turned to leave the chamber, a deep rumble echoed through the ruins, the ground beneath them trembling as dust and debris fell from the ancient ceiling. Luka froze, his instincts flaring. "They're here."

Kaela's hand tightened on her weapon as she glanced toward the entrance. "That didn't take long."

The rumbling grew louder, and Luka could feel the Aether's energy pulse in warning. Whoever—or whatever—had just arrived wasn't here for negotiation. The council's forces were moving in, and they were prepared to do whatever it took to capture the Aether.

"We need to make a run for it," Luka said, his voice urgent. "*Vigil* and *Aetheris* are still outside. We'll have a better chance fighting them out there."

Kaela was already moving, sprinting toward the exit. "Let's hope they haven't got a full army waiting for us."

They raced through the corridors of the ruins, the walls shaking around them as the ground continued to rumble. The air was thick with the tension of impending conflict, and Luka's pulse quickened as he heard the sound of distant engines—council ships, closing in fast.

As they burst through the entrance and out into the open, Luka caught sight of the council's fleet hovering above the ruins, their ships casting long, ominous shadows over the desolate landscape. Dozens of mechas, sleek and deadly, were already descending toward the ground, their weapons locked on the ruins.

"Damn it," Kaela muttered, her eyes scanning the incoming forces. "They brought everything."

Luka's heart pounded as he spotted *Vigil* and *Aetheris* standing at the edge of the landing zone, their systems already powered up and ready for battle. "We can't take them all head-on. We need to get out of here."

Kaela grinned, her confidence undeterred by the overwhelming odds. "You always say that, and we always end up fighting anyway."

Luka smirked, adrenaline surging through him as he sprinted toward *Vigil*. "Let's give them something to remember, then."

They reached their mechas in seconds, leaping into the cockpits as the council's forces closed in. Luka felt the familiar surge of energy as *Vigil*'s systems synced with his own, the Aether flowing through the machine like a living current. Kaela's voice came through the comms, sharp and ready.

"We're outnumbered ten to one, Luka. Got any bright ideas?"

Luka scanned the battlefield, his mind racing through their options. The council's forces were vast, but they weren't invincible. If they could stay on the move, use the terrain to their advantage, and disrupt the enemy's formations, they might be able to slip through the blockade.

"We take out their lead mechas," Luka said, his voice filled with determination. "The rest will follow. Focus on speed and precision—we're not here for a drawn-out fight."

Kaela's smirk was audible over the comms. "Now that's more like it."

The first wave of council mechas descended toward them, their weapons blazing as they opened fire. Luka darted to the side, *Vigil* moving with fluid grace as he dodged the incoming blasts. He fired back, a concentrated beam of Aether energy tearing through the lead mecha's armor and sending it crashing to the ground.

Kaela was right behind him, *Aetheris* soaring through the air with deadly precision. Her claws glowed with energy as she slashed through two mechas in quick succession, sending them spiraling into the dust below.

"They're still coming!" Kaela called out, her voice strained as more council mechas flooded the battlefield.

Luka's eyes locked onto the lead command ship hovering above the ruins. It was heavily armored, with shields crackling around its hull, but it was the brain of the entire operation. If they could take it down, it would throw the enemy forces into disarray.

"We need to take out that command ship," Luka said, his voice tight with focus. "That's our only shot."

Kaela hesitated for a split second before nodding. "You go for the ship. I'll keep them busy down here."

Luka felt a surge of gratitude for her unwavering support, even in the face of impossible odds. "Be careful, Kaela."

She chuckled, her voice warm. "You too."

Luka's grip tightened on the controls as he fired *Vigil*'s thrusters, launching himself into the air toward the command ship. The Aether's power surged through him, and for the first time, Luka felt a strange sense of clarity—a connection to something far greater than himself.

The council wanted the Aether's power.

But they didn't understand it.

And they never would.
