The director shook her head. "Not that we know of. She… came to us without a name or even any keepsakes from her birth parents. She just appeared one day on our doorstep in a basket."
"So her name…?"
"I gave it to her," said the director with a smile. "It's a habit of mine to name any children who come to us nameless after the Twenty-Four Solar Terms from the agricultural calendar. I think it can perhaps give a sense of larger belonging."
I liked that idea. "That's really nice."
"Or just sentimental," she said with an ironic twist of her mouth. "As for her English name, she must have picked that herself while she was running about outside."
"Would her name be changed if she was adopted?" I asked, trying to sound like I wasn't fishing for information.
The director's eyes narrowed a fraction. "So you've heard of her adoption?"
"Ah…"
