The storm of the beast tide continued.
Was it 15 minutes? Maybe 20, or even 30, Paul already lost count of time but the loud chaotic sounds of the beasts rampaging through this already ruined town kept on reverberating, penetrating his ears into his head.
The ground under his feet kept on shaking like an earthquake was rampaging.
At some point, it felt like the ruined building where they hid would collapse entirely but somehow, it held still.
Paul had never felt more grateful for good engineering than now.
Standing as still as a statue, Paul could already feel his bones turning numb from all the commotion even as his heart kept on beating rapidly.
Through this time, at certain intervals, he would look down before being frightened away by the howl of a terrifying demonic beast.
Paul had never been this tensed all his life.
What baffled him still was the occasional burst of battle. Somehow, against all odds, despite so much time having passed already, the assassins were somehow still alive down there fighting the demonic beasts.
"Get ready," Geass said. "When the demonic beasts start turning on each other, that's our cue to leave".
"Then, the assassins would either have died already or have hidden like us".
"By then, our only objective is to escape out of this town".
"Right now, this place is no longer safe for humans to stay in".
"It would take a long time for this storm to die down".
Paul nodded seriously while still paying attention to the commotion below.
At some point, another terrifying roar that deafened all the others resounded again, attracting all the attention.
This time, Geass looked. "Another Advanced rank demonic beast". He muttered with a grim look on his face.
Mustering his courage, Paul looked and saw an absolute Leviathan of a demonic beast. It was a giant Brown Bear that was even bigger than the Gorilla.
Both of these demonic beasts didn't seem to have any unusual ability that was prevalent among demonic beasts. They were pure power beasts; it was also why they were so gigantic.
Both leviathans felt irked at the presence of the other.
Forgetting that they were supposed to be hunting down juicy humans, these leviathans charged at each other, and then the most titanic battle that Paul had ever witnessed live commenced.
BOOM!
Both beasts clashing created such a giant shockwave that the building where they hid visibly swayed, sending Paul's heart beating even faster.
The battle continued for minutes, moving from one side of this town to another while leveling even more buildings.
All the while, Paul prayed for these 2 titanic demonic beasts to not drag their battle to their hiding spot.
He wondered if they would survive if that happened.
While he was lost in his thoughts, still tense from all the sounds assaulting him, Geass suddenly asked. "Have you noticed?"
"Huh?" He looked at the lean man.
"Look at the demonic beasts, they're no longer moving towards specific places, their movement is now more haphazard".
"It shows that they're confused".
"Their confusion means that the surviving assassin or assassins have hidden. If they were killed, the demonic beasts would simply turn on each other".
"Still, this won't last for too long. They would soon become frustrated of not seeing their prey. That frustration would eventually lead to them turning on each other, so get prepared".
Geass barely finished saying it when it started.
The stronger demonic beasts turned on the weaker ones first out of frustration, crushing them to meat paste, sinking their dagger-sharp teeth into flesh and tearing it apart ruthlessly.
That became the call for a change in momentum as the demonic beasts turned against themselves, turning this ruin into hell.
Paul did his best to avoid looking at the slaughter down below and paid attention to the lean man, waiting for his signal to move.
They stayed like that for maybe 2 or 3 minutes, and then he spoke. "Move".
"Stop".
Paul stopped immediately, then following Geass' gaze, he saw a dark figure in the night stealthily moving in the shadows away from the rampaging beasts.
This figure was limping, clearly injured.
Seeing that humanoid figure, Paul's eyes gleamed. "An assassin".
"Yes," Geass nodded. "Let's end his misery".
…
"F*ck!" The young man hidden behind the mask cursed.
He was tired of this mission.
He was tired of this whole job.
He was so damn tired of everything.
At first, the mission was made out to be a simple retrieval mission of a weak Cosmopolitan. Yes, the first time, the boy was indeed weak, but the mission description never said the boy's mother was a combat Dionysus.
They already suffered for that but compared to what they just suffered; it meant nothing. This assassin felt like cursing till time rewind.
When the assault of the beast tide descended on them, again, they were caught off-guard for the umpteenth time in this dreadful night.
All 3 of them moved to escape fast but one of them was not fast enough as the Advanced rank Gorilla pounced on him, ruthlessly tearing him apart.
His screams of horror and desperate struggle was meaningless in the face of such strength.
In the end, there was only 2 of them left.
Going in opposite directions, these 2 assassins overworked their God powers, burning God essence like water as they gave their all just to evade the rampaging demonic beasts and survive.
They survived only because of their clever usage of foresight.
This assassin didn't know about the fate of his last comrade but personally, after giving his all and losing an arm and a leg, he survived.
Luckily for him, he had a God treasure that could hide his aura completely, including his smell. That was how he stayed hidden.
Now, he was escaping.
'F*ck!' He cursed again in his mind. 'I'm not going back to the organization, I'm done!' He thought angrily.
But right at that moment, his foresight warned him of a terrible fate 1 second into the future.
1 second was too small a time frame for him to react, mostly because he was exhausted and also because he already lost an arm and a leg.
All he saw was the tall pointed end of a Stiletto, then…
Bam!
It stabbed his forehead, penetrating his brain and bursting out behind his head. The last thing this assassin saw was the fiery red eyes of the boy that burned with a yearning for revenge.
The assassin died.
The new smell of blood attracted some demonic beasts but by then, Geass and Paul were already out of the crime scene.
On this night, 5 assassins came after them, they killed 3 and left 2 to the mercy of the demonic beasts, an extraordinary feat.
They escaped the ruined town alive.
