Chapter 20 - The eye of the storm

Bam!

There was a snapping sound followed by a rain of crimson as a head was pulled right out of its neck!

Paul killed his first human.

"…"

"…"

"…..!"

For a few seconds, stillness and silence suddenly descended in this room of the ruined skyscraper, only disturbed by the movement of the lifeless body of the assassin as it slumped to the ground.

Hidden behind their masks, the remaining 3 assassins had different expressions of horror in their eyes as they stared at the Cosmopolitan.

'What…, just happened?!' They thought.

Yet, as they stared at their 3rd dead comrade, shocked, the 2 enemies were already moving. Why were they moving?

Were they trying to run?

Run from what?

Why run now when they already got the advantage by killing 2 of them in quick succession?

These questions quickly went through the mind of the assassins before one of them reacted, looking at the wall at the right side of this room with horror in his eyes as his foresight just triggered.

"D-d-d…, demonic beasts!" He muttered but it was too late.

BOOM!

The wall to the right of this room was slammed open with tyrannical force, glass and bricks flying everywhere as the assassins dodged.

They looked, and finally, they understood.

Right there at the edge of this room close to the broken wall was a gigantic demonic beast, an almost 3-meter-tall Gorilla with thick gray fur and a multi-colored face like a clown.

Its muscles bulged, making it seem like some otherworldly monstrosity.

When this demonic beast stood, it's hunched back almost touched the roof of this room. This was an absolute monster.

The eyes of the assassins widened. 'An Advanced rank demonic beast!'

Their eyes didn't linger too long on this monster though, this was because they had more urgent problems to think off.

Right behind the gigantic Gorilla, through the hole that the Gorilla opened through to get here, a tide of demonic beasts gathered and at this moment, all these demonic beasts charged towards them.

Frenzied craze shown from the eyes of these demonic beasts at the sight of humans, they yearned for human blood and flesh!

And finally, the assassins understood. 'We are in the eye of the storm'.

In weather terms, the eye of the storm is the calm region at the center of a storm or hurricane.

In terms of what was going on currently, the eye of the storm was being caught in the center of an endless beast tide.

It was an irony, but it was perfect to describe their situation.

Entering this ruined town, from first glance, it was evident that the toppled skyscraper was the landmark in the town where the most demonic beasts were gathered, including the truly terrifying ones.

The only reason why the assassins entered was to fulfill all righteousness in their search for the Cosmopolitan.

Another reason why they entered was their confidence.

As Heimdalls, they were confident in their stealth. They were pretty sure that they could be silent enough to avoid attracting the attention of any demonic beast, and if they encountered a beast that was too dangerous, they would retreat.

They never expected that right from the first room, they would be ambushed. And worse still, the ensuing battle caused noise.

That noise was what put them in the eye of the ensuing storm.

Looking back, their 2 enemies were already gone. Their eyes widened. 'This was all part of their plan'.

Yes, this was all part of Geass' plan.

This was what he truly meant when he told Paul to make use of his environment in battle, and what he meant by they may yet survive.

Terrifying roars and bestial howls blasted in and out of this skyscraper the next moment.

Like it was a slumbering beast, inside this skyscraper came alive.

BOOM! BOOM!

The stampede of demonic beasts could be heard from miles away.

The assassins dared not tarry. From the moment that the Gorilla emerged to realizing the devious plans of their targets, it took less than a second and at this moment, without hesitation, they moved.

The 3 of them had foresight and extra sensitivity. Their senses warned them about the general direction at which the beasts would come out, an invaluable tool yet it was not enough against so many demonic beasts.

BOOM!

All 3 corner walls that led to this room were blasted open by demonic beasts, flooding everywhere with their numbers as the Gorilla growled angrily.

These vermin were trying to steal its prey!

To the assassins, the situation just escalated and turned code red. At this point, it no longer mattered if they were from the same hidden organization, hierarchy no longer mattered here.

At this moment, all that mattered was, 'to your tents oh Israel!'

The 3 assassins separated, fleeing for their lives.

The deadly lunge of a Wolf-like demonic beast tore the right arm of one of the assassins, taking his dagger with it but this assassin only grimaced in pain as with incredible clarity, he ducked, rolled, dodged, and ran all just to save his life.

The assassins were faring badly, what of Paul and Geass?

The moment that Paul killed the 2nd assassin, making the others to freeze in shock, that was when Geass gave the signal.

They already risked staying too long.

Immediately after Paul saw his sensei's middle finger, his blood burned even hotter as without hesitation, he dashed out of the room.

He dashed out of the room just in time for the Gorilla to barge in.

"Follow me!" Geass growled.

They were fast but nowhere fast enough. Demonic beasts were coming from everywhere, not just those inside the skyscraper, but demonic beasts entered the skyscraper from outside.

With his twin daggers, this Heimdall's eyes shone dangerously as he dove into the tide of demonic beasts even as his daggers left a blur.

He was truly skilled with his daggers.

He paved a path of blood to the roof of this skyscraper.

Since the skyscraper was toppled over, covering the road, its original roof was now adjacent to the ground. Its walls were now the true roof.

Standing atop the roof of the skyscraper, Paul looked down and took a deep breath.

Demonic beasts…, countless demonic beasts, he saw them everywhere, charging from the distance, rushing inside the skyscraper while letting out bestial howls and snarls.

This ruined town that seemed like an abandoned ruin straight out of a book already turned into a town-wide battlefield.

The roof of the skyscraper was not safe though, the first demonic beast finally jumped here as Geass killed it in one attack.

"Let's go, run!"

Leading the way, Geass ran with all his strength as behind him, Paul followed.

They ran fast as their lives depended on it.

Their race on top the roof of the skyscraper lasted only a minute but in that time, they brushed with death more than twice.

But finally, they arrived at their target, another storied building of this ruin that toppled. It was the closest ruined building to the skyscraper.

"Jump!" Screaming, Geass jumped.

Behind him, Paul did the same, bursting through a window into the building.

"Lay down!" Geass hissed. "Don't let them see you!"

Paul lay down immediately as they hid in the darkness of the building. Few demonic beasts saw where they escaped to but amid the cacophony of noise, they soon forgot, returning their attention to the other humans.

For now, Geass and Paul were safe, what of the assassins?

"Arghhh…!!!" A blood-curdling wail resounded the next moment.

Paul shuddered at the sound, wondering the fate of that assassin.

His heart was still beating fast against his chest. He looked at Geass and whispered. "So, what now?"

"Now, we wait out the storm".
