Inside the marshal's office, Chiba presented Sengoku with the simplified version of his rapid Armament Haki training method.
It was Chiba's first time meeting Sengoku in person. The marshal was imposing—tall and muscular, like a small giant. He exuded a sense of authority and steadiness, as immovable as a mountain.
As Chiba studied Sengoku, the marshal returned the scrutiny. Despite Chiba's youth—only seventeen or eighteen—his expression lacked the arrogance or playfulness typical of someone his age. Instead, his demeanor was respectful and composed, his eyes deep, exuding an aura of calm and maturity beyond his years. Such a person wouldn't lie easily.
Could this kid really have developed a method that allows ordinary Marines to train in Haki? Sengoku wondered. How could that be possible?
Quickly, he opened the file Chiba handed him, flipping through the pages. The document contained illustrations of various body movements, each marked with specific breathing techniques. Beneath each image was a detailed theoretical explanation.
Sengoku frowned. In his experience, the primary way to awaken Haki was through focused dedication—like mastering swordsmanship. After years of practice, one would concentrate all their energy on the sword, and gradually, Armament Haki would envelop the blade.
Chiba's paper described this method as the "Appearance Method," but his new theory was entirely different. It emphasized different postures, breathing techniques, and the inner sensing of one's breath to lock spiritual focus—a technique he called the "Vipassana Method."
According to Chiba, the Vipassana Method had a much lower barrier to entry and was ten times more efficient than the Appearance Method. The theory was laid out with rigor, leaving almost no room for logical flaws. But theory alone wasn't enough; it had to be tested.
Sengoku decided to try it. He chose a cross-legged posture, with his palms facing upward, his head slightly bowed, eyes half-closed, gazing downwards in meditation. As he focused on his breathing, his initial discomfort faded, and his anger—initially stoked by Garp's antics—began to dissipate. He felt his spirit concentrating fully on his breath.
To Sengoku's surprise, the technique worked. Normally, when dealing with Garp's provocations, he needed at least half an hour to calm down, usually by venting his frustration physically. But using Chiba's method, it took less than five minutes to regain his composure and focus his mind.
Even more astonishing was how effortlessly he controlled his Haki. Within moments, his fists were enveloped in a dark, hardened layer of Armament Haki. Sengoku opened his eyes, filled with awe. Despite years of practice, he had never found it this easy to manipulate Armament Haki.
There were twelve movements detailed in Chiba's document, and he had only practiced one. If I master all twelve... Sengoku thought, his eyes widening as he contemplated the possibilities.
Seeing Sengoku's silence, Garp couldn't help but ask, "Sengoku, how is it?"
Sengoku took a deep breath and replied, "I just tried one of the movements. My ability to gather and focus my spirit improved fivefold. And that's just me. Once I become more familiar with the technique, I expect the efficiency to increase to six or seven times."
He continued, "Even Marines with basic aptitude could learn to cultivate Haki using this method."
Garp's eyes widened. He had supported Chiba's request for research materials mainly to keep him within the Marines, not expecting his grandson to produce any groundbreaking results. But now, Chiba had delivered an incredible surprise.
Grinning, Garp laughed heartily and clapped Chiba on the shoulder. "Well done, kid! I knew you wouldn't disappoint me."
"You don't know—just now, that old man Sengoku wanted to strip you of your major rank and dismantle your research room."
Garp pulled Chiba as if to leave. "If the Marines don't appreciate you, then let's go, grandson."
Sengoku, fuming internally, cursed Garp's entire lineage in his mind but immediately blocked their path. With a smile, he said, "Now, now, Chiba. Your grandfather tends to speak half-truths. When I said I'd remove your major rank, it was to promote you to colonel. And when I said I'd demolish your lab, it was to build you a larger facility."
Chiba didn't argue, simply explaining his research. "Marshal, my method is designed for the initial awakening of Haki. Naturally, for those who've already mastered it, the effects will be less pronounced."
He elaborated, "With this method, even Marines with basic talent and strong determination could cultivate Armament Haki. The cultivation speed is ten times faster than the traditional method. And I've designed twelve different postures to adapt to various people and situations."
"For instance, if someone can't sit for long periods, they can practice while lying down. In combat scenarios, when lying down isn't feasible, there's a standing posture for focusing Haki."
"These twelve movements provide multiple ways to condense Haki, each suited for different conditions. Of course, the effectiveness varies, and I've documented these details."
"This technique could increase the overall strength of the Marines by tenfold. Of course, those who already know Haki will see less dramatic results."
Sengoku's expression shifted, a look of genuine appreciation on his face. He realized that Chiba was a treasure the Marines couldn't afford to lose.
Smiling broadly, Sengoku announced, "It is decided. From today, Chiba, you are a Rear Admiral of the Marines. Since the establishment of the Marines, no one has achieved the rank of Rear Admiral in just three months—until now. You are the first."
