Leo sat in the corner of the small, dimly lit room, his back pressed against the cold wall. His heartbeat still thumped in his chest, echoing the frantic chase that had pushed him here. He wasn't sure how long he had been hiding, but he knew it had been long enough for the adrenaline to slowly drain from his body, leaving him weary.
This is ridiculous. He ran a hand through his disheveled hair. After everything that had happened, from sneaking into the girls' dorm to narrowly avoiding traps and being branded a "pervert," it was hard to see how the day could possibly get worse.
Leo glanced around the tiny storage room, its shelves filled with cleaning supplies and a random assortment of old items. Is this how it ends? Hiding in a broom closet?
His stomach growled, and he winced. Between the chaos of the chase and his desperate search for a place to lay low, he hadn't even realized how hungry he was. Can't starve to death in here, he thought bitterly. That would be too pathetic.
He stood up and cautiously approached the door, cracking it open just a sliver to listen for any signs of pursuit. The hallway was eerily quiet—no footsteps, no voices, just the faint hum of the academy's heating system. Still, he couldn't be sure it was safe. The girls could be lying in wait, ready to ambush him as soon as he stepped out.
I'll stay here a bit longer, Leo decided, retreating back to his corner. His mind was racing with scenarios, each worse than the last. What if Rin had told them to keep looking? What if Saki was leading a second search squad? What if—
He shook his head. There was no point in overthinking it. For now, he needed to rest and figure out his next move. The search had to end at some point, right?
Meanwhile, Rin sat up in her bed, feeling the heat of embarrassment flood her face again as the events of the previous day came rushing back. She clutched the edge of her blanket, her fingers trembling slightly. It wasn't his fault, she reminded herself. It was all an accident.
Saki stood nearby, arms crossed, watching her closely. "I've called off the search, just like you asked. But are you sure about this, Rin? I mean, he did barge into your room, and—"
Rin's eyes narrowed. "I'm sure. It was all a misunderstanding." She let out a deep sigh. "I need to find him and apologize."
Saki gave a reluctant nod. "Fine. But just be careful. He's been running for hours, and I'm not sure how he'll react when you find him."
Rin rose from her bed, her determination set. She was going to make things right, no matter how awkward the conversation might be. It's the least I can do for putting him through this.
Back in the storage room, Leo's patience was wearing thin. He paced back and forth, glancing out the tiny window that offered a view of the fading sunlight. The day was almost over, and he hadn't eaten, showered, or even sat down comfortably in hours.
I can't keep hiding like this, he thought, finally making up his mind. I'll sneak out when it gets dark. Maybe they've given up by now.
Just as he was about to stand up and head for the door, a soft knock echoed through the room. Leo froze, his heart leaping into his throat.
"Leo?" a familiar voice called softly from the other side of the door.
Rin.
His eyes widened. What is she doing here? Was she still mad? Did she come to capture him herself?
"I know you're in there," she continued, her voice gentle but firm. "Please, open the door. I promise it's safe."
Leo hesitated, his hand hovering over the doorknob. Was this a trick? Or was she serious? Either way, he had to know.
Taking a deep breath, he slowly unlocked the door and cracked it open. Rin stood in the hallway, her expression soft, almost apologetic. There was no sign of the angry mob he had been expecting.
"It's… over?" Leo asked cautiously, his voice still shaky from hours of paranoia.
Rin nodded. "It's over. I called off the search."
Leo blinked in surprise. "Why? I thought—"
"It was a misunderstanding," Rin interrupted, her cheeks flushing slightly. "I'm sorry for everything that happened. You didn't deserve all this trouble."
He stared at her for a moment, not quite believing what he was hearing. All of this—hours of running, hiding, fearing for his life—was because of a simple misunderstanding?
Leo sighed, running a hand through his hair. "That's… good to hear. But seriously, Rin, you almost gave me a heart attack."
She looked down, guilt flickering in her eyes. "I know… and I'll make it up to you. I promise."
