Chapter 3 - The School Newspaper

As Emily and I walked to our next class, she enthusiastically shared her experiences on the school newspaper team.

"You'll love it, Veronica! We're a fun group, and Mr. Patel, the advisor, is amazing."

We parted ways at the classroom door, promising to meet up later to discuss the newspaper.

In my last class of the day, I sat beside Alex, a quiet but friendly classmate who shared his notes with me.

As the bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, Emily caught up with me in the hallway.

"Hey, Veronica! Let's head to the newspaper room. Mr. Patel wants to meet you."

We entered the cozy room filled with computers, cameras, and bustling students.

Mr. Patel, a warm-smiled teacher with a kind demeanor, greeted us.

"Welcome, Veronica! Emily's told me great things about you. We could use a fresh perspective on our team."

He explained the various sections: news, features, sports, and entertainment.

"I think you'd be perfect for features," Emily chimed in. "You're so creative."

Mr. Patel nodded. "Why don't you start with a story idea, Veronica? We'll discuss it at our next meeting."

I left the newspaper room, feeling excited and motivated.

As I walked out of school, Alex approached me.

"Hey, Veronica, need a ride home? My mom's picking me up."

I hesitated, unsure.

I decided to decline Alex's ride offer and walk home instead.

"Thanks, Alex, but my mom's picking me up," I replied.

Alex smiled. "No problem. Maybe I'll see you around."

I watched as Alex walked away, feeling a slight pang of curiosity.

Who was this friendly classmate?

As I waited for my mom, I reflected on my first few days at Lincoln High.

The school newspaper team seemed like a great opportunity.

Emily's enthusiasm was infectious.

My mom arrived, and we chatted about my day during the drive home.

"I joined the school newspaper team," I announced.

Mom beamed. "That's wonderful, sweetie. You'll excel."

The rest of the evening flew by in a whirlwind of homework and dinner.

As I settled into bed, Emily texted:

"Hey! What's your story idea for the newspaper?"

I grinned, typing:

"Not sure yet. Want to brainstorm tomorrow?"

Emily responded immediately:

"Definitely! See you at lunch."
