Chapter 8 - Smoke, Fire, and Detective Jameson's Dilemma

''A tragic and sad news: a family who were known to be the founders of the Good Samaritan Charity Institution were mercelessly murdered, leaving no survivor among the whole family.'' The newscaster outside the crime scene said.''Who the fuck tips the media about this? '' Detective Jameson scolded her team inside the perimeter."Detective Emily Jameson, I am Jarren Levingston from New Era News. Can you tell us more about the case? Do you have a lead already? Is this related to the other murders recently? Are we dealing with a serial? Shouldn't the police be warned about this?"Jarren's eyes narrowed, his voice taking a confrontational tone. "Or are you and your team too incompetent to connect the dots? Three families slaughtered in two months, and still, no arrests. What does that say about your leadership, Detective Jameson?"Detective Jameson's expression turned stern as she paused, her eyes locked onto Jarren's. She took a deep breath before responding: "I know who you are and what you are. I will not answer any of your questions, as we are still in the early stages of the case and it is essential to maintain the integrity of the investigation. Rest assured, we are doing everything we can to solve this case and ensure the safety of the community. So, if you could let us work in peace, it would be greatly appreciated." Detective Jameson swiftly returned to her team inside the perimeter, leaving the reporters behind.Jarren's provocative question and insult sparked a momentary pause, but Detective Jameson remained committed to protecting the investigation's integrity.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Emerald was watching the live news on her television. When her watch beeps red light flashing in it, Emerald immediately got out of her flat and made her position in Anderson's door next to her.She heard a faint groan inside. She punched the password, and the door clicked open. She quickly covered her nose, smelling burnt, and she saw smoke billowing out from inside. Without hesitation, Emerald rushed in to assess the situation and ensure Anderson was, and there she saw Anderson having a hard time getting rid of a smoking oven. Emerald quickly grabbed the fire extinguisher from Anderson's grip, and the moment the fire was gone, Emerald quickly went to Anderson, who is having a hard time breathing. She quickly killed the alarm to avoid people on the building panicking . She helped Anderson out of the kitchen and into the living room, where she opened the windows to let the smoke out. Emerald then helped Anderson lie in her back ,''Wait , are you doing? uhuhu.'' Anderson tried to protest, but Emerald laid her with force on the sofa. She put her hand on Anderson's forehead.''Get off me.'' Emerald ignored Anderson's protests and continued to check her pulse and breathing.Emerald placed her hand on Anderson's forehead and said, "Open your mouth." Anderson, still coughing, managed a sarcastic whisper, "Oh, great, now you're trying to kiss me?"Emerald rolled her eyes. "Not now, Anderson. ''Anderson grumbled, "You're enjoying this, aren't you?"''Just do what I say, Anderson,'' Emerald said firmly.''Urgh, I am okay, uhuhu.'' Anderson continued to resistEmerald ignored the jab, focusing on the airway check. She gently tilted Anderson's head back and lifted her chin.

Anderson groaned, "What's wrong with you? Can't see I'm fine?"

Emerald inspected Anderson's airway and said, "You're not fine. You're choking on your own arrogance."Anderson coughed, "Hey, watch it!"

Emerald moved to the breathing check, "Look, listen, feel."

Anderson mock-whispered, "I think I'm dying, " and acted like choking. But just give her a stern look and continue.

Emerald smiled dryly, "You're not dying. yet."''So you are trying to kill. I am going to sue you. Huhu, this is a death threat, directly from you.''Emerald ignored her again and checked Anderson's circulation, feeling for the carotid pulse.Anderson swatted at Emerald's hand, "Stop groping me!"

Emerald held firm, "I'm saving your life, not flirting."

Finally, satisfied with the ABC check, Emerald helped Anderson sit up.

I felt embarrassed by what Emerald said. ..

Anderson rubbed her sore head and said, I'm sorry, but Emerald leaned on the wall and rubbed her head.''Wh—what I already said, sorry.'' Anderson looked at Emerald in confusion.Emerald scolded, "You almost burned down the building, that's what! What were you thinking, leaving the oven unattended?"

Anderson's face turned bright red. "I was distracted..."

Emerald's stern expression softened slightly. "Next time, focus on cooking, not on flirting."

''Hey, I wasn't flirting; I was talking to my fiancé, and how did you know that? '' Anderson raised an eyebrow and freaked out. ''Oh my god, you are stalking me! ''''Shut up, Anderson. I was walking to my flat and the door was open, so I accidentally heard your gross flirting,'' Emerald explained with a smirk. "And for the record, I don't stalk people." Anderson's embarrassment, but she won't back down. "Well, in that case, you should knock next time before barging in on my private place."

''Then you should've been dead right now,'' Emerald said dryly.

''Urgh, I am sorry, okay? '' Anderson mumbled, feeling a mix of embarrassment and annoyance.

Emerald's expression turned stern again. "Sorry? Sorry isn't enough! You could've killed us all!"

Anderson slumped, embarrassed. "I know. I'm sorry."

Emerald huffed, "Get it together, Anderson. And maybe take a cooking class."

''What the fuck are you insulting your cooking skills? '' Anderson retorted, feeling a surge of defensiveness."I'm just saying, maybe it would help you focus on something other than being an assuming brat," Emerald shot back with a smirk.

As Emerald helped Anderson recover, she couldn't help but think, "Only Anderson could turn a near disaster into a comedy."

Detective Jameson's eyes scanned the cryptic message scrawled on the note: "You'll never connect the dots."

A chill ran down her spine. The serial killer's taunt echoed in her mind. "Three families slaughtered...still, no arrests."

Jarren's provocative question resurfaced: "Or are you and your team too incompetent to connect the dots?"

Jameson's determination intensified. She wouldn't let the killer's games intimidate her.

"I will connect the dots," she whispered, eyes locked on the note.

Meanwhile, Emerald and Anderson's banter continued:"I'm just saying, Take a cooking class," Emerald teased. Anderson smirked, "I'll show you my skills...in court."Emerald dryly spoke, "Looking forward to it." and finally left the flat and go to her flat next door. As they parted ways, Anderson muttered under her breath, "Stalker."
