Maddie's comment hit like a ton of bricks. Everyone in the room—Nick, Amelia, even Aiden—froze. How could a kid her age possibly know what went down between Nick and Amelia last night?
Amelia's heart skipped a beat as she stammered, "W-who told you that, sweetie?"
Maddie shrugged like it was no big deal. "Elizabeth said it. Her mom never comes home when she's out with her boyfriend, so she has to sleep with her nanny." She was talking about one of her friends from daycare back in Massachusetts.
Nick and Amelia exchanged a look, their faces flushed with embarrassment. The kid wasn't wrong—last night, they didn't come home either.
Maddie grinned triumphantly and turned to Sean. "Told you they were dating. Now hand over your two bucks."
With a deep sigh, Sean dug into his pocket and handed over the money. He muttered under his breath, "You're such a know-it-all." Maddie just smiled wider, clearly pleased with herself.
