Amelia rushed home, her heart racing as she tried to focus on what Prof. Lewis had wanted to discuss earlier. The urgency of the meeting had thrown her off, and now she regretted not having the chance to fully talk things over with Nick. She had to tell him about Maddie and Sean. There was no putting it off any longer.
But as she stepped onto the front porch, her stomach tightened. Nick's voice boomed from inside, practically shaking the walls. "So what if Amelia and I spent the night at a hotel?" His voice was heated, frustration pouring out with every word. "She's my wife, mom!"
Amelia froze. Nick was on a video call with his mother, and she could hear Mrs. Zhao's sharp reply. "I don't care!" his mom hissed, venom dripping from every syllable. "Do you remember what the Wang family did to ours? Have you forgotten? Don't you see? Amelia is just like them, probably after our money, waiting to ruin us like her family almost did!"
