Ethan Brooks: "..."
Sophie Brooks: "..."
Mrs Brooks: "..."
Logan's unexpected reaction left the three of them stunned.
It wasn't until Mr Brooks's wails pierced the air that they snapped out of it.
"Oww, my hand is broken!" Mr Brooks clutched his hand, trembling, his face wrinkled in pain—Logan's stomp had not been gentle.
What started as a fake injury had now turned into a real one.
The other three were seething with anger, ready to lash out.
But Logan suddenly said:
"How about you take this old man to the hospital first? I'll reimburse you for the medical expenses later. How does that sound?"
The unexpected concession caught the three of them off guard again, leaving them with a feeling of pent-up frustration.
Mrs Brooks almost choked on her anger; she had been ready to curse Logan's ancestors, but now that he had agreed, if they continued to make a fuss and he changed his mind, what then?
"You... you have to pay for the medical bills, nutrition, emotional damages, and lost wages!" Mrs Brooks gasped, testing the waters.
Logan nodded, surprisingly agreeable:
"Alright. You go on ahead. My house isn't going anywhere, so treatment comes first."
Though their goal was achieved, they couldn't shake a sense of dissatisfaction. Why did it feel like they were losing?
Mr Brooks's moans of pain continued.
Ethan Brooks didn't dare to delay any longer. He pointed a finger at Logan:
"Kid, if you don't pay, I'll make sure you regret it!"
After spewing some threats, the three helped Mr Brooks onto the tractor and drove down the mountain.
Logan watched the tractor drive away.
Of course, he had no intention of paying any medical bills.
He had simply wanted to get rid of them.
In a few days, when the blizzard hits, if they can still make it up the mountain, he'll consider it his loss.
Logan then walked towards a patch of woods.
From the moment he had stepped out of the shelter, he had sensed a gaze from within the trees.
Ever since his rebirth, Logan had become particularly sensitive to being watched.
So sensitive, in fact, that he could detect it within a 50-meter radius.
As Logan entered the woods, his phone suddenly rang, followed by the sound of hurried footsteps in the distance, quickly fading away.
He only caught a glimpse of a shadow disappearing into the dense foliage.
Logan pulled out his phone; the caller ID read "Zach."
Irritated, he answered the call: "What is it?"
Logan guessed that after being ignored for two days, Zach was likely getting restless.
"Logan, guess who I just ran into?" Zach's voice was filled with mystery.
Logan raised an eyebrow: "Who?"
Zach sounded excited over the phone:
"The son of Harbor City's richest man, Simon Clark!"
Logan's grip on his phone tightened.
"Simon Clark?!"
"Yeah, he even spoke to me first! When he found out I was in South City, he invited me to go diving with him tomorrow and told me to bring you along."
"Logan, you actually know such a super-rich second-generation heir? You've been hiding this too well; that's not cool."
Zach continued to ramble on, but Logan's mind was stuck on the fact that Simon Clark was in South City. He barely registered anything else.
Simon Clark was one of the main culprits responsible for his death in his previous life.
But in truth, Logan's enmity with Simon Clark had begun long before.
Logan's father had once been an employee of Spark Energy Company.
On the day Logan's father died, the chairman of Spark Energy Company had brought his son to the factory for an inspection.
When they reached the area Logan's father was in charge of, the chairman's son suddenly poured a drink over the electrical equipment, causing a short circuit and an explosion. Logan's father died on the spot.
Spark Energy's chairman, Benjamin Clark, to cover up the incident, gave everyone at the scene a large hush payment and made them sign non-disclosure agreements. The matter was then closed with an exorbitant death compensation payment.
However, an employee who had been close to Logan's father secretly told Logan what had really happened.
That's when Logan learned that his father hadn't died due to a work-related error but had been murdered!
And the chairman's son was none other than Simon Clark.
Logan had told his mother about the incident.
Logan would never forget the look his mother gave him—a mixture of conflict, hesitation, disgust, and pity.
In the end, she told him she would investigate the matter and advised him to focus on his studies.
After that, the employee who had secretly told Logan the truth vanished without a trace.
A few months later, Logan's mother remarried.
And her new husband was none other than Benjamin Clark, chairman of Spark Energy!
Logan felt as though he had been caught up in a massive conspiracy.
To avoid bringing disaster upon himself, Logan had never spoken of this to anyone else, except Zach after the apocalypse began.
He had hoped to gather evidence in secret, but he found that the Clark family had already covered their tracks in Harbor City. Any chance of revenge seemed impossible.
In his previous life, the survivor shelter in Harbor City had also been established by the Clark family.
He never got a chance to exact his revenge, and his one opportunity, just before he died, was interrupted.
Now that Simon Clark was in South City if he killed him this time, no one would be able to save him, right?
Logan's knuckles turned white from the pressure he exerted on his phone until a crack sounded as the screen shattered, snapping him back to reality.
"Logan? Logan? Are you coming or not?" Zach's voice urged from the other end of the line.
Zach still didn't know that Simon Clark was Logan's enemy.
"Yes, of course, I'm coming."
It didn't matter what Simon Clark's purpose was in South City; Logan was determined to kill him!
Logan's gaze darkened, and a cold smile curled on his lips, sending chills down one's spine.
The birds in the forest sensed the killing intent and scattered in all directions.
...
On the afternoon of June 3rd, at 1:00 PM, the countdown in the top right corner of the Cornucopia showed 21 hours remaining.
Logan arrived at a dock where private yachts were moored.
From a distance, he spotted Zach chatting animatedly with a young man with white hair who had his back turned.
Logan recognized that figure immediately—it was Simon Clark.
Suppressing the murderous intent in his eyes, Logan approached the two of them.
"Logan, what took you so long? Young Master Clark has been waiting for a while," Zach said in a scolding tone, standing beside Simon Clark.
Had Zach already shifted his allegiance to Simon Clark?
Logan smirked internally. As expected, whether in the past or present, Zach would always turn on him whenever Simon Clark was involved.
Outwardly calm, Logan replied:
"Traffic was bad, so I'm late."
Simon Clark turned around, revealing a pale face that had clearly indulged in too much wine and pleasure.
His short, white buzzcut gave him a rebellious look.
His gaze was still as lofty as in the previous life, assessing Logan as if he were appraising a cheap product.
At this point, Simon Clark hadn't yet developed the viciousness he would later display in the apocalypse. In his previous life, Simon Clark often beat people to death if he didn't like what they said.
He would take any girl he fancied, acting as if he were the emperor of Harbor City.
Simon Clark waved his hand dismissively:
"It's fine. You're here now, that's what matters. Let's get on the boat."
