Chereads / HIS INNOCENT MISTAKE / Chapter 18 - The funeral

Chapter 18 - The funeral

In a span of one week, everything happened so fast. In one minute I was talking to Sebastian, and in another minute I had lost him.

Luckily I did not loose both of them. Damon had survived by the needle. He was critically injured when the paramedics brought him to the ER. Damon has gone into comma which I had no idea when he would wake up.

I have been visiting him everyday. Today too I would, after we were done with Sebastian's funeral.

The past two days I had anticipated my meeting with Brian McDermott Grey but it didn't happe. I had done everything to stay out of his way incase he showed up. Apparently he wasn't seen anywhere considering this was his brother's funeral.

A young beautiful woman in her ripe twenties was the one handling everything. From asking around, I came to know she was Stacy

Indeed she was quite a damsel. Damon and Seb did not lie when praising her.

Solely, this woman was handling everything. She was so much knowledgeable on what to be done at such time. She made everything run accordingly.

Sitting at the chapel, we were patiently waiting for the hearse to arrive. Everyone's face was either stunned or in shock at the unfortunate incident that had claimed the life of the young CEO of S hotel.

It was not long when the cart was pushed into the chapel. We all stood to pay our respects.

The casket was gently wheeled onto the alter where the proceedings was to take place. I was too much focused on the hearse, I did not notice him among the congregation.

Clad in an all dark suit, his aura exuding dominance could be felt throughout the entire building. His blank tinted glasses matching with his outfit rested carefully on his nose. His head was bowed as a sign of respect to his late brother. His movements were steady and slow as he was in pursuit of the hearse. There was an elderly woman, also in a black outfit clung onto his right arm.

From the resemblance he had with the late Sebastian, I figured out it must have been his mother. I hurriedly looked away at the miniscule thought of him catching me staring.

Together with the elderly woman, they took a seat beside Stacy who was at the front seats where family were to seat.

After everyone had paid their respect, the priest proceeded the event. Sebastian was not to be bureied but cremated. It took almost thirty minutes for the chapel to end. Afterwards, family and close relatives were to follow the body into the cremation hall.

I wanted to follow them but I couldn't due to the fear of being recognised by him. I opted to steer clear of him at the moment. This week drama had been following me around, and the last I wanted was cause another drama at such a critical time.

Instead, I called for an Uber which took me back to M Hospital where Damon was held. On reaching the reception to check in, I was stunned to be informed that Damon had been moved to a different facility.

"By who?" I inquired.

The lady who had no interest in attending to me, adjusted her glasses before flicking her long nails and said they could not reveal the identity of the person.

"He's in safe hands though, If that's what you're worried about. " How kind of her to add.

Begrudgingly, I stomped out of there with a broken heart. I had lost Sebastian and now Damon?

I tried to make calls to any person who could give me a lead on who might have taken Damon, but none. I realised that as much as Damon was my friend, I didn't know much about him. And so my search was rendered futile.

Disappointed, I returned home with a heavy heart. Lana had suggested she accompany me to the funeral with Prince, but I strongly forbade them. Together with Denis, she had stayed indoors and patiently waited for my return.

I reached home tired and famished. Lana who was waiting for me to tell how everything went, served my meal. As much as I was hungry, I wasn't in a mood to eat.

"Dear, how did everything go?" Finally she asked.

"It went well. " I flatly responded.

I then narrated everything, excluding Brian who I saw there. The last thing I wanted was to start reminiscing about him.

Lana who was absolutely aware he must have been there, was so considerate not to ask.

We ended up not eating our dinner. The sombre mood was hanging in the air, and no one dared mention anything about it. That evening I retired to bed, exhausted from everything life had to offer.

It then dawned on me that I was never going to see Sebastian again. Seb, my boss who had also become my friend was gone for good.

I silently wept as I sat at the far end corner in my room. Prince was peacefully sleeping on bed, and I did not want to wake him up. I gently tucked the duvet into his sides. I walked to my wardrobe and opened one of the shelfs where I usually kept the book.

Overwhelmed by emotions, I had a lot to pen in it. Surprisingly, I was met with an empty shelf. It was then I recalled how I had burnt the black book.

Perhaps I needed to get a new one.

To distract myself, I took my phone and dialed Damon's number.

Again for the hundredth time, it was unreachable. The same way I had prayed for him during the accident, was the same way I did a small prayer on his behalf. I prayed for the heavens to safeguard him wherever he was. Until we met again.

Drained and exhausted, I scooted beside my baby, not forgetting to leave a kiss on his forehead. Tears were still leaving my eyes at the heavy burden I held in my heart.

I slept, wishing the next day would be different. After all, it was a new day. With new beginnings!
