After running a few errands at work, evening came and everyone was preparing to go home. I was in a middle of arranging things when I suddenly got a message from the HR, requesting for my presence.
"Apologies for seeking your attention this late Miss Benards," the lady in a dark grey suit began. She was well endorsed, very meticulous as she proved that her role really suited her.
Since I had done nothing wrong, I had nothing to worry about. However the sudden summon, made me began wondering what the the lady needed from me.
"No problem ma'am. Is there something I can help with?"
I curtly responded.
The lady wore a sad expression that needed no wise man to tell something was up. Patiently, I waited for her to say a word.
She took her time in going through the files on her table. After a small search, she landed on a sealed envelope amongst the files, and retrieved it. She then handed it to me.
I skeptically took the envelope, scanning through her face to detect anything that would give me a clue of whatever was in that envelop.
"You can open it when you reach home. " She calmly said.
As much as I would have loved to, the anxious feeling in my gut could not let me.
"What's in there?"
I asked. The lady did not answer.
"You'll know. After you get home. "
She said instead.
A sudden feeling surgerd through my veins, coercing me into opening that envelope right there in the office. I spared our HR one last glance, before tearing the seal open.
She opened her mouth to say something, but closed it when she noticed my eyes were all ready skimming through the contents of the envelop.
"What? "
My expression suddenly turned into pure shock. How could they?
"What's the meaning of this Lucy?"
Her name was Lucy. Lucy did not say a word, instead she kept staring at me like I had grown two heads.
"What have you read?"
Her cat lined eyes challenged. I could feel the adrenaline in my body surgethrough my system. I was getting worked up ,and Lucy should have known better than challenge me further.
"I do not want to disrespect you Lucy. " I strained to tell.
"Just tell me what's the meaning of this. "
Lucy assesing the rim of my eyes, she noticed a few tears were threathening to fall. As much as I was trying to hide it, it was evident on all of my face.
This was not happening to me. How could they do this?
Lucy, who was determined to further frustrate my situation, second thought about her acts and suddenly changed her approach.
"I'm sorry miss Benards, but you're fired!"
It was like a bomb dropped on my well curated small world. I had read it. Everything was written on the damned paper. But hearing Lucy say it out loud, did more damage than I had anticipated .
"And what are the reasons behind me getting fired? I haven't done anything wrong. I come to work on time. I do my work well. I have received any complain not warning from anyone. What is the reason of you firing me?"
What I needed were answers and Lucy's silence was not doing me any good.
"Lucy, "
I mumbled her name trying to lower her zeal into revealing what might have been the reason behind me getting sacked, but her eyes were cold as ice.
To accelerate the situation, Lucy did not spare me any more of her attention. She went back into doing whatever she was doing before I arrived there.
It reminded me of the first day I had arrived here. Around lunch at the cafeteria, Lucy had approached me and tried to make friends with me but I had ignored her.
She regarded me of high esteem since I had been invited into Sarova hotel personally by the former CEO, and so had felt the need to keep me close. With the demise of Sebastian, everything was taking a drastic change.
After staying in Lucy's office for five minutes without her attending to me, I left. It did not take me much to figure out who was behind all these. Ofcourse how could I not think about it! He despised me so much and was doing everything to get rid of me.
Brian!
I gritted his name as a myriad of emotions surged through me. How could he do this to me?
As much as I did not want to work with him, I did not expect him to get me fired. This was so unfair. It was very unprofessional and uncalled for!
The more I thought about him, the angrier I was becoming. All I could see was red, as something told me Brian was still in the premises. If Lucy could not give me answers, Brian would. Whether he liked it or not!
I stomped into Seb's office which was now taken over by Brian. I did not find him there. Instead, I saw Seb's name board still hovering at his table. For a minute, I felt sad.
Suddenly, I heard Brian's deep voice from across the room. He was in the conference room.
Without thinking twice, I kicked the doors open and stomped into the next room. I was welcomed by tens of eyes looking back at me. The board members were shocked by my sudden appearance in the room.
Immediately, embarassment creeped up my neck as I realized what I had done. Talk about unprofessionalism!
Brian was in a middle of the meeting which I had awkwardly disrupted. His eyes, cold and dark, stared right back at me with so much resentment that they creeped me out.
I immediately turned on my heels and left the room. Not long, I heard him mutter, "excuse me," as he followed me.
My fingers were fidgeting, my heart was beating fast as I anticipated his approach. Something told me to braze myself for the worst
Whoever was approaching me, was not the Brian I knew.
Cold as ice, I heard him mutter my name.
"That was very unprofessional miss Benards!"
Reluctant, I wheeled my fit and gently turned to look at him. His gorgeous chiselled face with eyes so unwavering, stared right back at me like a ghost staring at his host.
