Kelvin's POV
"How could you think of something like that mum?" I enquired
"what has suddenly come over you because you are not behaving like the son that I trained you to be. You are the exact opposite of the son I raised and nurtured" my mum said to me
"how can you be so cool with the idea of me getting married to a complete stranger just because I want to prove a point to others?" I asked her.
"You are not just proving a point my son. You are carving the path so that so many great opportunities can come to you with ease" my said to me.
"I am not ready for such opportunities if it steals my originality from me, mum" I said to my mum to her surprise
"You are not losing your originality son by getting married to a lady based on a contract or do you think that it poses any harm that I do not know about?" my mum asked me
I was silent for a while before she continued.
"Besides my son, I am your mother and I only want the best for you. This is a corporate society we are constantly in a tussle in. You do not neglect anything or anyone. This is why I always advise you to hop your game to help us gain visco in this corporate battle, at least until your dad is strong enough to be with us" my mum said to me.
I understood all she was trying to say but even with that, I could not come in terms with the idea of an arranged marriage because it seems to go against all my personal values and beliefs but it seems like I am the only one who is an alien
"Please, my son, if you truly want me to feel fulfilled, then find a lady who you can settle down with, even if it is temporarily.
" it is not as easy as you want me to believe "I said to my mum
" I know that but you are worth every inch needed to get this done my son" my mum said to me
"I do think I can go on with this mum so I do think that there is any need for us to keep up with this conversation since we both know that at the end of the day, it will not yield any positive reward" I said to my mum
"please son you have to do this for the sake of this family because there are a lot of things at stake with this decision" she said to me suddenly sounding like a woman who was worried and in distress
"You are trying to play an emotional game on me, mum," I said to her, trying not to look into her eyes so that I would not fall for her cheap trap. When I remembered the story of the bar attendant I met earlier today, my resolve was strengthened especially with the tale of how he lost his wealth due to a problem in his marriage.
"This is not a game, son. This is our family posterity that we are talking about here" my mum said to me
She was really sounding like a broken woman and I was beginning to get confused about what she was really trying to achieve with all of these things
"I seem not to understand you, mum," I said to her.
"For now, you do not need to but your decisions in this situation can affect our lives greatly" my mum said to me making me more curious.
"OK… Ok Mum. This is already becoming too much for me to bear. I will go along with the plan of an arranged marriage" I said
"wow! This is my son and I am truly confident that you have all it takes to make this this family work" my mum said to me jumping from her seat ecstatically
"only on one condition, mum" I said stopping her on her tracks
"What is the condition, my son?" my mum asked me looking confused.
"the only condition that will make me agree to the idea of a fake marriage is that I will be under no obligation to take care of this lady except to perform my marital obligation as her husband" I said to her hoping that it will discourage her from going on with the arrangement but I was in for a surprise.
"Is that the only condition?" my mother asked obviously surprised by the nature of my demand
"Yes, at least for now" I said to her, feeling stupid for not being able to come up with something better.
"Thank you son. You have made me a happy woman today" she said to me looking truly happy as if I said something totally out of this world.
"But before you celebrate mother, I do not plan on having a child with a woman I do not truly love. I am doing this just to stop you from pestering my life with your constant disturbance" I said to her
"We will sort it out when we get there but for now I am totally satisfied with this." she said to me
"But mum, do you have anybody in mind or do you expect me to start going in search of a girl who is ready for a fake marriage?" I asked her sarcastically
"Yes, I do have somebody for you, son. Her name is Bella Pires" she said to me
"Bella Pires? That name sounds familiar to me. Do I know this lady?" I asked my mother because I knew that I had heard that name Pires somewhere but I cannot remember where I heard that name from.
"no, I do not think you know her but tomorrow you will see her because I have invited her to come over to the house tomorrow already," my mum said
to me.
It was time for me to start another phase of my life.
