Chapter 1 - It is not Clicking

Tony

Was that Melanie? I blinked as I stared at the woman walking into the ladies bathroom.

She was swaying her hips as she went, but the Melanie I knew was not that way. I've been seeing her in almost every woman I've seen tonight.

I really need to see her. I sighed as I lounged lazily on the wall, facing the bathroom. I don't know why my feet won't move but I need to confirm.

I'm only doing this, because of my inheritance, I told my throbbing heart. I can't even recall when it started throbbing, but it was and I needed to shut it up. So, I'll just wait here to confirm. I need to see her from the front to confirm if it's her or not.

Not long after, the lady came out and made to walk to my side. But she stopped and and waved at someone. I waited to see who it was, and how their conversation would turn out.

I really need to confirm who she is. Damn the mask. I watched the lady flirt and twirl her hair as she spoke to this other guy and I found myself trying to compare her to what I knew about Melanie and nothing clicked.

I was going to wait till they were done to approach her, but my phone rang and I moved away to pick up the caplt when I saw who the caller was.

"Speak." I said into the phone when I picked it up, heading to.a quiet part of tbe bar.

"We've gotten her boss." Came the reply from the other side. I grimaced at this news as I immediately walked out of the club.

"I'll be there shortly." There is no reason to drag this out more than it's necessary. There will be time to later to confirm whom I saw.

I got to the exit of the club and an attendant went to bring my car around.

"Thanks." I said as I moved to the driver side to get in.

"Mr. Knight." I pause at the call of my name and turned around to see a middle aged man standing in front of me. He was dressed like a wimp, trying to look younget than his age.

"Yes?" I looked at questioningly.

"Fancy meeting you at this club." He stretched his hand out to greet me, which I completely ignored. They looked sweaty.

"Sorry, I'll pass." I told him.

After an awkward few seconds for him, he withdrew his hand to himself, coughing slightly.

"I'm sorry for inconveniencing you with my presence here." The stranger continued, completely being a dick head.

"I did not grab your name, earlier."

"I'm sorry, my bad. I'm really sorry." He put his hand into his pocket and brought out a business card.

"My name is Sherlock Holmes." I wanted to laugh at that name, but I kept my cool. The man must have noticed because he quickly averted his eyes and changed his stance. He stared at me, annoyed.

"It's only a pseudonym." He continued and I shrugged in response. It's funny all the same, I thought.

"I'm a reporter and I have been trying to get a hold of you. I came here because I know you love frequenting clubs and...." He noticed the change in my countenance and stopped talking.

Did I just give a minute of my time to a shameless reporter? I don't even want to know what he wants to say. Nothing good comes from their mouths.

"Get lost." I said through clenched lips as I turned around and got into my car, zooming off before him. Purposefully leaving a trail of dust behind for him.

"What an idiot." I seethed. The worst people to me are reporters. They don't just know when to stop. They are ready to do anything to get recognized by printing all sorts of fallacies about people.

"Fucking idiots." I looked in the rear view mirror, then brought my car to an abrupt stop. That was Melanie.

I was exhilarated. I looked closely and sure enough, it was her.

How did I recognize her so swiftly from this distance? My mind questioned me wish I wisely ignored. There is no need to dwell on such thoughts right now.

She seems to be struggling to hold her companion from falling. She will certainly need help. I smirked as I watched them go out of the club's premises and tried hailing cabs unsuccessfully.

I reversed and went to the other side of the entrance, no one dared stopped me.

I parked in front of them and rolled down the window glasses.

"Hi, Melanie." I greeted her, looking remorse.

"He..." She bent down and saw that I was the one, then humphed and looked away.

She was dragging her friend away from my car. I quickly came down and went to them, just in time to catch her falling friend, then I steadied her back on her feet as best as I could.

"Thank you. You can leave now. Our ride will soon be here." She was not sparing me a glance.

"Please, let me drop you. It looks like it's about to rain. You shouldn't be caught in it."

"I just told you our ride will soon be here. So, you can please leave."

Her friend murmured something unintelligible to me but Melanie held her mouth shut immediately and took a quick glance at me before looking away.

I ignored this, "I know there is no ride. I'm sorry, but I noticed you when you left the club and how you've been trying to get a cab but unsuccessfully."

An unexplainable anger flashed across her face, as she stare at me with her hands akimbo.

"And does that make you proud? The fact that you always see me in distressing and unconventional ways, does that make you feel good about yourself?" She spat out angrily.

Sure, I was taken aback by this attack but why did she just glow beautifully in front of me? Why did my heart just skip at the light that came up in her eyes?
