"Here comes the game. The five persons nominated for the prefectship position should step out to the front of the class", my teacher said.
We obliged slowly to her instruction.
"Now, the five of you will turn your back the class while we proceed into the voting game. Rosette will be known as 'A', Favour will be 'B', Kelvin will be 'C', Flora will be 'D' and Olive will be 'E'. So, let's start voting. If you're voting for A, raise your hands please".
No one raised their hands to vote for me. I guess the rebel just started.
"If you're voting for B, I want to see your hands up".
I could already guess from what the teacher said that Favour had sixteen votes. Kelvin had nine votes. Flora had twelve votes while Olive had fourteen votes.
Since Favour had the highest votes, she was made the class prefect while Olive who had the second highest vote was appointed the assistant. As my only friend, I congratulated her. She only looked at me with sad eyes and said,
"Their plan to dethrone you finally worked".
"What do you mean? Was I ever a queen or something?", I replied.
"Come on, don't get sarcastic with me. You know what I mean", Olive stated.
"Right. You were saying something".
"You know what happens when someone else from the class gets the prefectship position, don't you? You should. They are all like minds. They might team up against you just because of the fact that you're not the one acquiring the highest position. Also, I hope they won't manipulate me into hurting you 'cause that would be the worst revenge. I'm an assistant and I'm under a higher authority. So, please, play safe. It's better to be nice to a fault to win them over than to go against a multitude".
I nodded my head slowly. I've never known what there is to trauma until now. All week long, everyone kept talking about the fact that the honoured queen bee got zero votes. Everyone kept praising Olive and Favour for their ability to humble a proud peacock. I became invincible again. Olive started having lesser and lesser time for me. Since she was a new celebrity, everyone loved to hangout with her. She always wanted me to join in but what's the point of it? I would be looked down on if I do so. They would think I was becoming clingy for attention. I guess there are sometime in your life where you're forced to listen and ponder over critics about you. Some things just never change. I was lonely and now, I'm lonely.
I've decided not to join the crew. If they can't accept me for who I am, so be it. And if I can't make them accept me, so be it. If you can't beat them, stay in your shell. The multitude aren't always right so it's better not to join them.
I bet Olive never understood this. Suddenly gaining so much popularity, she thought it would be okay to let them in her secrets so that they won't one day get bored of her. I mean, who doesn't like spicy gist? It's bad enough to tell someone your secret but it's even worse when that someone is a fake friend.
