"Jiang Feng…"
Having his name called out again, Jiang Feng subconsciously shivered in the unfamiliar environment. He quickly moved back when he saw the gas slowly reaching out towards him, about to engulf him whole.
However, as if its presence with every passing second was weakening him, the tide of the mysterious gas closed in the distance between the two within a blink of an eye, engulfing his legs and his head altogether. Losing all chance to struggle and escape, the only thing Jiang Feng could do was to let the mysterious gas cover his shouting as his vision turned dark.
A few moments afterwards…
"…sir…can you hear me?"
"What…huh?"
Opening his trembling eyes, Jiang Feng sat up with anxiousness as he looked around himself. The surrounding crowd that was holding up their phones recorded his panicking look as confusion slowly seeped into him.
"Are you okay now?"
Feeling the warmth of a hand on his back, Jiang Feng came to notice the unfamiliar middle-aged man next to him. It was his hand that was slowly patting Jiang Feng's back and calming him down, allowing rationality and cool-headedness to take back control.
This proved to be effective as Jiang Feng's ragged breathing soon came to a rhythmic pace, no longer showing signs of panic or whatsoever. Turning to the middle-aged man, Jiang Feng went through all the confusion in his head and picked out the most important as his lips moved.
"What happened?"
…
Right after he received his meal from the staff at the counter and was on the way back to his table, Jiang Feng suddenly fell down on the ground as his drinks and fries spilled everywhere.
The noise immediately made everyone in the store turn over and gather their attention on him, as those with high curiosity but clueless about what to do circled around him, taking out their phones to record the twitching Jiang Feng.
Just as the staff at the counter was about to call for an ambulance, the middle-aged man stood up from his seat and walked over to Jiang Feng, leaving his wife and daughter at their table waiting for him.
With skillful techniques, the middle-aged man immediately tried to shake Jiang Feng awake. Seeing that it was fruitless, the middle-aged man proceeded to check for any signs of probable cause of Jiang Feng's situation.
But to his shock, other than the ragged breathing and uneven chest inflating and deflating, Jiang Feng's vital signs were all normal, as if the anxiousness on his face was nothing but an illusion to the eyes of people around him.
Before he could turn to the staff for help, Jiang Feng's breathing immediately disappeared. Placing his hand on top of Jiang Feng's chest, right above where the heart is usually located, the middle-aged man's expression turned grave as he realized that the heart was no longer beating.
Knowing he had to start saving Jiang Feng, the middle-aged man decided to perform CPR as he shouted at the staff to call for emergency medical services. Thankfully, Jiang Feng's breathing returned after being pressed on his chest for just a while.
This brought relief to the middle-aged man as his hands retracted away from Jiang Feng. Before the crowd could applaud for his heroic deed, the middle-aged man raised his palm and signaled the crowd to maintain their silence a little longer, which they agreed easily.
Taking a few deep breaths to calm himself down, the middle-aged man started checking Jiang Feng's pulse carefully. It was also at this moment that Jiang Feng sat up in shock, almost pushing down the middle-aged man onto the floor.
Although startled by Jiang Feng's sudden awakening, the middle-aged man knew that the crisis had more or less passed. Calming the anxious Jiang Feng, he then proceeded to tell Jiang Feng about what had happened during the time that he fainted.
…
"So that's what has happened, thank you for taking care of me when I was out at the time."
"It was just an act to save someone in crisis, no need to feel that you're in debt."
Thanking the middle-aged man for his care, Jiang Feng slowly stood up from the ground with his help. The crowd had already been dispersed by the staff when they saw the medical assistance arrived. Even so, photos of Jiang Feng and the middle-aged man would be taken by the bystanders every once in a while.
Walking out of the door with the help of the staff and the middle-aged man, a nurse walked out of the ambulance as she welcomed Jiang Feng in. Taking out machines that Jiang Feng knew none of, the nurse applied them on him as they measured his vital signs and detected for abnormalities.
"Looks like you're fine now sir. You should be good to go now." The nurse said.
"I see, sorry for the trouble everyone. It must be the lack of sleep that caused all of this." Jiang Feng apologized as he slowly got out of the ambulance, lowering his head to the people present.
"It's fine kid, just go home and get some rest. Here's your stuff, you need a ride home?"
Handing over the bags back to Jiang Feng, the middle-aged man asked as he took a step back. Hearing his question, Jiang Feng wanted to reject his kindness, but before he could, the nurse interjected and said to him.
"There's no need for you to go so far for the kid, I'll send him back home. Great job in handling the situation, mister."
Receiving the nurse's praise, the middle-aged man didn't say anything but laughed a little in reply. Leaning to the door of the ambulance, no one seemed to notice that Jiang Feng was lost in his own world.
