My mother's lips thinned into a hard line. "Let me rephrase the question," she said, her voice clipped. "Do you have feelings for Vanessa?"
The weight of her question settled on me like a lead blanket. My hesitation, or maybe the raw ache in my eyes, seemed to be all the answer she needed. She shuddered, a flicker of disappointment crossing her perfectly composed face. "So you have feelings for her..." she trailed off, then sighed. "When did you guys first meet?"
"The week I came back from London," I confessed, the words scraping out of my throat. "It was supposed to be a one-night stand..."
"But you caught feelings," she finished my sentence, a knowing look in her eyes.
"Yeah, Mom," I admitted, the guilt a bitter pill to swallow. "I did."
"This means she cheated on Richard, who is your friend," she stated, her voice tight. "With you. And you cheated on your wife"
