Karen's demand lingered in the room, heavy and unrelenting. I struggled to find the right words, a response that would keep the situation from spiraling. Before I could say anything, she cut in again.
"I want you to start by firing her from this hotel. I don't want you two being so close to each other every single day."
It wasn't as easy as snapping my fingers, not anymore. A week ago, it might have been different, but now? Vanessa was pregnant with my child. If I pushed her away, how could I convince her to keep the baby?
"I can't just fire her without cause," I said, keeping my voice calm. "Especially considering her family's business and ours are connected."
Karen's eyes widened, her flawless composure cracking. "Are you serious? What family business? Stop with the nonsense. Is this your pathetic excuse to protect her?" Her voice rose, sharp with disbelief.
