The highlight read, 'Legendary enmity.' Before I could read ahead, the door of store room creaked.
Vera and I both turned and found Mrs. Anstey looking at us from the door. "Hello, mother." I said and got up.
"What are you both doing here?" She asked.
"Ohoho, Andrew has the most bizzare ways to express his care. So, anything caught your eye?" Mrs. Anstey asked, sipping the hot tea from the small teacup.
We ended up sitting in the living room, eating evening snacks.
"Well, I did find some of your family's photos. They were pretty cute and vibrant. I had lots of fun, going through the albums upstairs." I smiled. "Hmm. I still remember, vividly, Oliver's and Andrew's mischiefs, with my brother, James." She nodded her head.
I ate some biscuits and she asked me again, "Anything else you want to know about?"
I gave it a good, long thought.
"Um, I actually found a box upstairs full of newspapers. One of them read, 'Legendary Enmity'. If it's alright with you, I would like to know more about it." I said.
The pleasant expression from her face suddenly disappeared and she cleared her throat. Her eyes became more serious and she looked at me.
"I really don't have to know if it's anything personal." I said, keeping my teacup and saucer on the table.
"You are a part of our family now, you should know. That incident took place about three years back. James's company was growing day by day. He entered into a contract with another businessman. All was well until the businessman decided to betray him. He took most of James shares, leaving him bankrupt. This was huge deal back then. James went away after that and I haven't seen him ever since." She said.
"Really sorry to hear that." I said.
She smiled, which looked pretty forceful to me. "Let the past be in the past. Your father likes to keep old things, to keep a memory of the past. Anyways, what would you like to eat tonight?" she asked.
"Anything is fine, mother." I smiled.
I decided to start reading the letters of the third box.
It was 10 o'clock, when I took out the box from my cupboard. I had kept it deep inside, so that nobody would be able to find it.
I was so very curious to know about their 'goal', about the assassination Jacob mentioned.
Who was her boyfriend?
Who attacked her and why?
I wore a blanket, to keep warming up the letters to see if they have something written with invisible ink.
Most of the letters just had how his days passed. No such clue. They went out a lot, during those few days.. About ten letters were left. I left them and then closed the lights.
For some reason, I was worried, that there are no more clues in those letters. I would be completely helpless then.
I should look into Jacob's case as well.
I suddenly got up and took out my laptop once again.
I decided to search up online, who had a brawl with my father. When I did, I just found websites of Ally's case and of the success of my father. Some even had discussions and fake information of the rumors going around.
How is that possible? Maybe father asked them to be removed. Shit.
What should do I now?
I closed the laptop and got back into the bed. I felt really annoyed at the moment and then fell asleep.
When I woke up in the morning, a very obvious thought struck my mind. Those newspapers were from years back.
My father's brawl must have been a hot topic back then. Those could have information about it.
I decided to go in the store room again and read that box of newspapers.
"Vera? I need to go to the store room again. Sorry to trouble you, repeatedly." I said, while sitting on the bed, in the morning.
"Oh no, my lady. It's my duty to assist you. But the adversary now, is that the store room has been closed permanently, upon Sir's and Ma'am's orders." Vera replied.
"Ohh..." I never thought something like that could happen.
All the opportunities are slipping from my hand like sand.
"My lady, the car is outside." Vera knocked and informed me while I was getting ready in my room.
"Just a minute." I said and wore my shoes.
I was going to visit Jacob, and had asked Vera to join me. She was hesitant at first, but in the end she ended up agreeing to come with me.
I sat in the car with Vera right beside me. "Excuse me? Could you please stop at a florist on the way?" I asked.
"Sure, my lady. Please fasten your seatbelts." The driver started driving.
I entered the hospital and went to his room. The bodyguards let me in and I gently opened the door. The doctors were inside and were doing a routine checkup. I sat on one of the chairs in the spacious room and waited for them to finish.
Charlotte wasn't there; she must have gotten some work.
"Is he getting better?" I asked one of the doctors.
"Yes, he's going through a speedy recovery. In two weeks, he'll be conscious again." The female doctor, holding a paper board and a pen, said.
"Thank you." I said.
They left a few minutes later and I walked to the bed, where he was resting. I had bought a bouquet for him. It had yellow and red roses. I kept them on the table next to him.
He lay, so motionless.
"I hope you wake up soon, Jacob. I'm getting closer and closer every day. Could you give me strength to find the truth?" I asked.
I remained quiet for some time.
"I'm sorry for calling you to meet me that late. If I hadn't, none of this would have happened. I'm so sorry. I miss our hangouts and conversations. It must have really hurt." I touched his head, which was full of bandages. I felt sadder and full of guilt.
