Chapter 33 - XXXIII: A Bad Comeback

In a fraction of a second, Qui Lin had conjured up a flame Alkalis. Fully aware this wouldn't have any effect on the Parabeast, she did so either ways, pointing the flames at the leg that was aiming to impale her.

With the force of the flames, Qui Lin was propelled a few centimeters back, just so the Parabeast's leg had missed just by a hair's length, thereby successfully failing in harming Qui Lin.

Once Qui Lin made her way to the ground and evaded the Recoil of her flame attack, a Tethered from the other side of the Parabeast had foolishly shot a lightning strike at the Parabeast's joint, in an attempt to save the Lady Qui Lin.

Once the lightning had struck the joint, the Parabeast crumbled to the ground.

Upon seeing this, Judith felt something in her heart snap.

"You fool! Who told you to…" Qui Lin attempted to reprimand the Tethered, but Judith had interrupted her through their Mind-Link Alkalis.

'Lady Qui Lin, there's no time. Please, I need you to make the next move.' Judith had said, completely transfixed by the Parabeast's joints, which began to glow red, more intensely than before. So the water around its body and not just in the joint area began to evaporate.

'What is my next move?' Qui Lin said with anger lacing her tone.

Ignoring this, Judith had just blurted out.

'I need you to tell the Tethereds to attack the Parabeast with water faster, it has to be drenched. After which I need you to freeze it, then…'

'You want me to do what?' Qui Lin had asked, lost for a moment.

Judith, now understanding what she was asking, took a pause. She remembered that this Alkalis she was asking for in particular, was a type given a name of its own, that being Quadrats. These types of Alkalis were ones in which people usually strayed from because of one fatal flaw.

They always took too long to initiate. Most times, when a Tethered was trying to call upon this Alkalis, they would mess the process up in their heads and would have to start from the beginning. These types of Alkalis could take as long as a whole minute. Which, doesn't sound like much, but considering the fact that it could be repeated multiple times due to errors, time would be wasted. Time which was an essential and fleeting commodity in battle, which would determine whether a person lived or died.

Plus, the Alkalis was also very confusing and convoluted, and as a direct result of that, it meant that the Alkalis required a Tethered's utmost concentration. Meaning that a Tethered had to sit in one position, thereby successfully making the Tethered a sitting duck.

Due to all of these problems, the value of the Alkalis had always been weighed and tossed to the side as not worth the time and or effort. No matter how powerful they were.

Though these types of Alkalis were still used in battle, albeit strategically and sparingly, it was never the first option.

Qui Lin, knowing full well of the Alkalis' need to put a Tethered at risk, did not like that idea. As she and anybody for that matter, did not like being in harms way.

Harm was not nice.

Now fully remembering the gravity of the Alkalis, Judith chose her next words carefully.

'If you don't do this, everyone will die.' Judith said very bluntly, now feeling all mannerisms and etiquettes escaping her like a convicted felon trying to escape prison. This was due to the fact that everyone would — as she had quoted it — 'Die!'

Judith kept her gaze intent on the Parabeast's joint, watching its flesh glow bright red and fearing that any minute now, the Parabeast would do what it was designed for.

Suicide.

Not saying anything, Qui Lin turned away from the Parabeasts and her Tethereds. Deciding to make some good distance between her and them.

"Lady Qui Lin." One of the Tethereds had called out, but at once she was hushed by a raised hand from Qui Lin.

"Keep attacking, do not relent. Only use water." Qui Lin spoke with a dismissable tone, which the Tethered would not have heard had she not been the closest to Qui Lin. At once she relayed the information onto the others and they all resumed their assaults.

Judith watched helplessly from the corner of a building, waiting anxiously for Qui Lin to do her part, so the last bit could be done to end all of this. She kept her gaze on the Parabeast, and watched as it rose from the ground onto its feet and turned its attention to the Tethereds attacking it.

It zoomed like a battering ram, crashing into another building and completely destroying it. Luckily, no one was hurt once again, as everyone had evaded the attack. But what caught everyone off guard, even Judith, was when the building the Parabeast had crashed into caught on fire.

Judith gasped, feeling time eat away at her.

'Come on Qui Lin.' Judith had just said this to herself, not wanting to bother Qui Lin since she knew Qui Lin would need all her concentration. But yet, she couldn't help but consciously worry, as the Beast's body temperature began to rise higher and higher.

At this rate, all the attacks of water that were supposed to sink into the Beast's stone carapace, would be completely dried up by the time Qui Lin had returned.

Not able to do anything apart from worry, Judith decided to take a deep breath and calm herself down. When she came to, she found she could think a little bit clearer. And with this sudden clarity, Judith had realized there was someone behind her.

By the time she had realized this, it was too late to react. The person behind her had already grabbed onto her. A handkerchief had been shoved into her nose and mouth, and her hands had been pinned down.

Judith at once knew who this was, and what was to follow as the handkerchief was placed on her nose. In an instant she remembered she was still linked to Qui Lin, but before she could call for help, a scream resounded in the air.

When Judith had turned her eyes to the direction of the scream, she found a Tethered on fire. Upon seeing this, her now weary eyes had widened. She then realized she hadn't told Qui Lin what to do after freezing it.

But at the moment, Judith knew they were running out of time. She was already getting weak and sleepy. And the Parabeast was going to go off like a bomb any minute now. Thinking to herself with what little time she had, she made a decision and said to Qui Lin.

'Don't get distracted,' Judith said with a calm voice, as though nothing was happening to her. Her eyes began to get heavy, and her bodily functions started shutting down slowly, but she didn't react to this fact. 'After you freeze the Parabeast, you just have to shatter it with one powerful strike. That's all.' Judith said, feeling weaker and weaker as the seconds went by.

'Why are you telling me this now? Can't you see I'm busy?' Qui Lin said, stuttering her words and trying not to get the Alkalis wrong. But as she spoke, Judith gave no response, which somehow, left her a bit uneasy.
