Joan's heart beat louder with each beat than the one before it. She was sure that she had misheard him and that her mind was playing tricks on her.
She was accustomed to his expectations and demands as her boss, but this was something else entirely. She must ensure she understands what he's trying to imply.
"Sir, Mark," she said in a scarcely discernible whisper. "I don't understand what you mean." Her face was so innocent, and her eyes were wide as a doe.
