Chapter 10 - The weight of pain

The alley's shadows seem to press in furthering my claustrophobia , the air thick with the metallic tang of fear and blood as i crumple further into the corner, a silent scream held in my throat. My eyesight dreary, blurred and grey. I can barely make out shapes, it must be the blood loss. I trace my hand over my leg, hissing in agony as i try find the worst of the wound. My fingers warm with blood and sweat as the mixture drips below. After a minute of searching i find the deepest section. Ripping my sleeves i begin to apply a rough tourniquet, grasping the fabric i tighten the knot with such ferocity i wish i had the pill this morning. Re-tracing my fingers there is a substantial decrease in the flow of blood, sighing in relief i look around, with my vision still a blur i barely recognise objects. A dumpster, staircase and a ladder, i am not to sure. Standing as i hold myself against the wall i head to the dumpster, stumbling over i finally reach it. Yet in my time of distress my mind slipped, it is not a dumpster. It is a robot store. Small in size, perfect for the street robots, or worse. Steading myself i draw out a long breath as i concentrate. Feeling the adrenaline slowly drain away the searing pain returns, i need to shift the weight to reduce the pain, tilting my body and very carefully lifting my injured leg as i lean to the wall i begin to move down in a somewhat squat position to sit down. Shallow gasps escape me as i finally reach the darkened floor. Leaning back into the wall i realise the only move is to fall asleep and let my body slowly rest and in the morning go to the underground facility.

The alley shimmered with the cold, metallic gleam of countless gears as a swarm of sleek, silent robots moved in unison, their metallic limbs a stark contrast to the decaying concrete of the surrounding walls. But in the fresh light of dawn their features disappear as they begin to look more like moving bricks. The light yellow dawn reflects through the eyes of Rose as she backs even further into the wall seemingly moulding herself into it. Her mind calculating a multitude of scenarios, good, bad, she can only hope for the best yet currently is is a dire situation. Already assuming that the robots have been coded to also look for her whilst completing their tasks this compromises nearly the entire city for travel. But first she must survive the robots coming out of the robot store, the silence almost deafening as the constant ray of light is obviously reflected off their void limbs. Scenarios running through her mind yet one comes first, the refraction of light changes, indicating the robots have changed direction and slowly but surely one appears. Air caught in Rose's throat, none escaping, similar to her own situation. What can one do? Inevitable doom, torture and death on the brink of happening, yet the robot moved away. Rose's mind astray, new thoughts appearing yet one more prevalent, why in such a calculated, formulated, exponentially expanding city did she not get caught. Because the mere though of someone trying something so wrong would disgust them to such a great extent said person would be ostracised creating the society where small details are missed. The weight of her heartbeat almost as heavy as the pain, even though the pain has significantly subsided there will still be the feeling till the injury is properly dealt with. As Rose steadily rises she makes sure to focus her weight on the uninjured leg, peeking round the robot store she makes her move. To get to the facility. Due to the slight alter in her DNA by the facial re-structuring being undone all surveillance will lead to false tracks.

Knowing the route i make my way their with an occasional grunt of pain. Thankfully by avoiding the robots i have kept myself out of trouble, yet one issue still standing is how i will access the facility when i do not know where Dr Goult is. Remembering the layout i try to think of any secret entrance, but it even then i cannot pinpoint the actual location as everything is blacked out till entry. Ironically the worst masterpiece to help me. I need to continue at this pace, the effort needs to outweigh the pain. Looking up, my vision nearly fully healed i see possibly the worst person right now, Dr Jake Wilson, walking straight towards me as i hear his monotonous voice drear out "You look injured, please accompany me to the hospital at one of my laboratories" Shit, fuck. Looking up, meeting his eye, my only hope is to act innocent, against probably the smartest individual known to mankind. Calming my heart-rate i straighten my back replying "That would be lovely, however i am in a rush, and the injury is not to damaging" Re-thinking my words, they should do, yet i still feel like a minuscule bug infront of a lion. "I insist, follow me" Watching him turn around, i immediately follow, who can refuse him. keeping my weight of my leg, whilst trying to make it look painless i try keep up. Not even five minutes pass by, and i must admit i have contemplated trying to sneak away, yet i would not risk it. I might be able to use this opportunity to my advantage. Turning a corner as the bleak/ skyscrapers ands buildings cover the roads, i see the laboratory. Heading inside i still follow, my heart pounding, my leg aching, my mind racing. "Through these doors is one of the medical facilities where you will be checked and treated, bye" Rather abrupt, yet i am thankfully he left, murmuring a silent thanks as he walks past me. Moving into the medical section i am ordered to follow a nurse to a doctors room, yet my body freezes when i see the door tag. Dr Goult.
