Chapter 2 - Memories of the past

Riven came to his senses to after a partial blackout to meet almost 50 people staring at him strangely.

"What's with them?" He muttered while standing up.

"It's all your fault," a voice said.

"Yeah," said another. "If it wasn't for you he's still be here to lead the group."

While trying to understand the reason why they were saying those things, the screeching sound came once again, and Riven fell to the floor and put his hand over his ears.

One man came out from among the group and pointed at him; "We should throw him out, he's been nothing but bad luck to his whole group."

Following that, different voices came up, expressing their agreement to the man's words, they were slowly inching their way towards Riven when Daniel stood in front of him.

"Now Thane, we shouldn't act rashly, how could you say we should throw away the person our leader Greg risked his life for? Do you think he'd be happy about that?" Daniel said, trying to reason with them.

"But don't you think it's getting too much? He was even the cause of us having to leave the previous camp, the monsters attacked because of him," the man named Thane pointed out.

"Yeah, another man said, "we've practically been carrying him along ever since we found him, and he's brought nothing but bad luck since then."

Daniel looked at the faces of everyone and sighed.

"It seems most of you agree to casting him out from the group. Fine then, we'll make the decision when we get to the new camp, everyone should focus on the journey for now."

The group reluctantly dispersed with a few mumbles here and there, some still occasionally throwing deadly glances at Riven.

Riven barely acknowledged everything that transpired, as his mind was clouded, stunned by what was in front of him.

'What is this?' He thought.

In front of him was a floating box that had words in it, following his vision as he moves his eyes.

He was shocked to see that none of the people around had called it out, when it was a normal experience for the people of this weird world he found himself in.

Out of curiosity, he tried tapping on the box but his hand went right through, and then he realized the box was semi-transparent, depending on how he focused his view on it.

"Are you okay, Riven? Did you hit your head or something?"

Riven looked up to see the man that had carried him back to the group, the same one who had stood up for him just now when the entire group had consented to kicking him out.

"Ah, Sir Daniel. I'm okay, thank you for helping me get back and standing up for me." Riven said half heartedly.

"Ah it's nothing, Riven. Don't worry about the others, you'll be able to stay with the group without any problem. They're just mad about the death of Greg." Daniel replies then turned to leave.

'Sir Daniel? That's weird, he's never addressed me that way before.' Daniel thought.

Riven noticed that the group were now just staying still while the earth moved them to their destination.

'That explains why I'm still with them even after sitting down,' Riven thought.

Focusing on the box in front of him, Riven had to assume he was the only one who could see it. He read the words in the box which were;

[Uploading previous body's memories into host's brain. 95/100% done.]

[Uploading info about host's current world. 95/100% done.]

[Uploading System info. 10/100% done.]

'Hm? System info? Don't tell me it's that kind of system in anime's and manga.' Riven thought.

'It's also saying info about my current world? Does this mean I transmigrated or what? But how?' Immediately he thought of this, Riven blacked out.

•••

Riven opened his eyes to find himself floating in a black void, and words flashed in front of him;

[Uploading previous body's memories into host's brain. 100% done.]

[Uploading info about host's current world. 100% done.]

[Memories of host's last moments in previous world will now be shown.]

'Huh? Last moments, what does it mean last moments, I'm pretty sure I didn't..' his thoughts were stopped when the black void around him slowly grew brighter and started materializing different things until Riven was standing in a vaguely familiar room.

'This... is my room back home, but what is all this, what's happening?'

A figure entered the room and Riven saw it was the same person as himself.

He entered and Riven was expecting him to have a sort of panic after seeing him but he just passed through him like he wasn't even there, and that's how Riven knew he was in a holographic form.

The real Riven...

'No. I'm the real Riven, even though I'm in a holographic form right now. What the hell is even happening?'

Riven's mind raced as he tried to understand what was happening. He saw his own body walk into the room, but it was like he was a ghost, invisible and intangible. The other Riven settled of the bed and suddenly the scene shifted.

Riven found himself in a dark alleyway. He saw a multiple figure gathered around a body in his very room. Looking closely, saw the body they surrounded was his own.

Stunned and confused, The scene shifted again, and Riven saw scenes of himself manipulating and abusing people like they were animals. The scenes played out like a movie, and Riven felt like he was reliving his own life.

He saw faces that he saw in the previous scene surrounding his dead body, and saw how he entirely abused them because he was a rich businessman whom no one wanted to trifle with.

The void returned, and the words flashed again: [Memories of host's last moments in previous world will now be shown.] Riven felt a sense of dread as he realized what was happening. He was seeing his own death, his own last moments.

The scenes played out, and Riven saw himself die. He saw that he was poisoned by one of his maids who collided with others to kill him, and when the poison took effect, they all entered the room to joyously witness his death.

He recalled how he was a ruthless man back in the world, and his previous characteristics and mindset came back to him.

He saw himself as one who still had power to control and misuse people anyhow he wanted.

The mindset that people were nothing but tools to be used came back to him, and his heart hardened.

"If this is what I think is happening, then I didn't transmigrate. I reincarnated, and I think I have a system," Riven muttered.

'Hmm.. but from what I've heard about these things in my previous life, the ones with systems are supposed to help the world, but how is that my own problem?' He thought.

'The world could perish for all I care, it's the same set of humans that betrayed me anyways'

A few more scenes played out, and Riven found himself in the void again.

[Host's death has been recounted.]

[Memories of the previous body will now be shown.]
