Chapter 32 - Star Dragon Trial (15)

Kairos felt a deepening bond with Aella. She had gone from being someone he had to protect to a trusted companion, a friend who had chosen to stand by him despite the dangers they faced. As he glanced at her across the campfire, he felt a warm sense of camaraderie. There was something comforting in knowing he wasn't alone in this perilous journey.

With a sigh, Kairos turned his attention to the task at hand. His original purpose for venturing into the ravine weighed heavily on his mind. He had come here to craft an arm for his cousin Caelum, who had lost his in a fierce battle with a Sigiled Skink. The memory of that fight still gnawed at Kairos. Caelum had risked everything to protect him, and Kairos felt a deep responsibility to make things right. He couldn't shake the guilt that he might have been able to save Caelum's arm if he had acted differently.

"Eclipse, I need your guidance," Kairos murmured as he focused on the materials he had gathered. The Sigiled Skink had been a formidable opponent, but its body had proven useful. With the skink's remains and the other materials he'd obtained, he hoped to forge a new arm for Caelum—one that would restore his cousin's life to some semblance of normalcy.

Eclipse's voice echoed in Kairos's mind, calm and authoritative. "You've got all the ingredients. The skeleton arm you retrieved is crucial, and with the dragon flesh you from the Sigiled Skink, we can craft something truly remarkable."

Kairos carefully laid out the materials: the skeleton arm, still intact from the Draco-kin, and the dragon flesh he had acquired. The sight of these powerful remnants filled him with a mixture of anticipation and dread. Could he really do this? Could he really create a new arm for Caelum?

As the hours passed, Kairos worked meticulously under Eclipse's guidance, weaving the dragon flesh around the skeletal arm. The process was delicate and required intense focus. The flames of the campfire crackled, casting flickering shadows on his concentrated expression.

Aella sat nearby, watching in silent awe as Kairos worked, occasionally offering words of encouragement. "You're doing great, Kairos," she said softly, her voice filled with quiet admiration. "I've never seen anyone do something like this."

Kairos smiled slightly, though he didn't take his eyes off his work. "I have to do this right, Aella. Caelum deserves it after everything he's done for me."

The dragon flesh fused seamlessly with the bone, its black scales glistening with red accents under the firelight. The transformation was astonishing. What had once been a bare skeleton now looked like a powerful limb, ready to be wielded by a warrior. The scales gave it a formidable appearance, making it seem as if it had been freshly taken from a dragon-man.

Eclipse's voice broke the silence, filled with satisfaction. "The arm bone came from a Draco-kin, which is why it took so well to the dragon flesh. They're of the same lineage, making them naturally compatible. You've done well, Kairos. This arm is as good as new—no, it's better."

Kairos exhaled slowly, his body relaxing for the first time since he'd started the process. He looked at the finished arm, marveling at its craftsmanship. "It looks incredible," he said, his voice tinged with awe. "Caelum will finally have a chance at a normal life again."

Eclipse chimed in, his tone practical but with a hint of pride. "Put it in your inventory now. You need to keep it in pristine condition until you can attach it to Caelum. A rotten arm won't do him any good."

Nodding, Kairos carefully stored the arm in his inventory, ensuring it was safely tucked away for the journey back.

As the tension of the task eased, Kairos's thoughts turned to the next challenge: how to return to the treetop camp where he had left Caelum. The ravine walls were steep and treacherous, and he wasn't sure how he could climb back up with the arm in enough time.

"I'm not sure how we're going to get back up there," Kairos mused aloud, glancing at the sheer cliffs surrounding them. "It's going to be a challenge."

Aella, who had been quiet for some time, perked up at his words. With a playful glint in her eye, she stood up and spread her wings wide, the feathers rustling softly in the night air. "You forget who you're with," she said with a grin, flexing her wings proudly. "I may not be as fast as my brother Zephyr, but I'm still an Icarus. Flying is in my blood. I can carry you back up to the treetop camp with no problem."

Kairos looked at her, momentarily taken aback. Aella's wings were impressive, strong and agile, and the confidence in her voice was unmistakable. He couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm. "You think you can carry me? I'm not exactly light, you know."

Aella rolled her eyes playfully. "Please. I've flown through worse conditions with more weight than you. Besides, after everything we've been through, carrying you up a ravine will be a breeze."

Kairos chuckled, feeling a weight lift from his shoulders. "Alright, Aella. I'll trust you on this. Let's get back to Caelum and give him the good news."

Aella gave a firm nod, her wings flaring with determination. "Hold on tight, then. We're heading back up."

As Aella prepared to take off, Kairos felt a knot of anxiety form in his stomach. Heights had always unsettled him, a lingering fear from his past life that he couldn't quite shake. The idea of being so far off the ground with nothing but the air beneath him made his heart race.

Aella glanced over her shoulder at him, her eyes filled with confidence. "Ready?" she asked, her wings twitching in anticipation.

Kairos swallowed hard, trying to mask his apprehension with a weak smile. "As ready as I'll ever be."

"Don't worry, Kairos," Aella said with a reassuring smile. "I've got you. Just hold on tight, and we'll be back at the camp before you know it."
