Chapter 36 - Star Dragon Trial (19)

Kairos stirred awake, his senses gradually attuning to the soft, golden light of dawn filtering through the tent's fabric. The morning was quiet, a stark contrast to the chaos that had unfolded the night before. As his mind cleared, he became aware of a comforting warmth beside him, a presence that eased the tension lingering in his body.

Turning his head slightly, Kairos's breath caught as he noticed Aella lying next to him, her delicate features softened in sleep. Her wings, normally a powerful and imposing sight, were now draped gently over him, like a protective blanket. The feathers, a graceful, shade of white an grey messed, shimmered faintly in the dawn's light, creating an ethereal aura around them. For a moment, Kairos simply watched her, the peaceful rise and fall of her chest as she breathed deeply, the soft sigh that escaped her lips as she unconsciously shifted closer to him. There was something profoundly calming about her presence, a rare moment of tranquility in a world that often seemed to be on the brink of chaos.

Kairos smiled faintly, the edges of his worry softening as he allowed himself to savor the quiet moment. Aella had fallen asleep beside him, her wings encircling him in a gesture of trust and affection that warmed his heart. It was a side of her he had rarely seen—vulnerable, unguarded, and at peace. He hesitated, not wanting to disturb the rare serenity of the moment, but the responsibilities of the day weighed heavily on his mind.

Gently, he shifted to disentangle himself from Aella's wings, doing his best not to wake her. The feathers were surprisingly soft against his skin, and he found himself reluctant to leave the warmth they provided. But as he sat up, careful not to jostle her, Aella stirred, her eyes fluttering open. She blinked sleepily at him, a soft blush coloring her cheeks as she realized how close they had been.

"Good morning," she murmured, her voice still heavy with sleep as she withdrew her wings, folding them neatly behind her. "Did you sleep well?"

Kairos nodded, offering her a small smile. "Better than I have in a while. Thank you, Aella." His tone was sincere, and the look in his eyes conveyed his gratitude for the comfort she had unknowingly provided.

Aella smiled back, the corners of her eyes crinkling slightly. "I'm glad," she replied softly before her gaze shifted toward Caelum, who lay unconscious but stable on the other side of the tent.

The mood shifted as Kairos followed her gaze, his attention drawn once more to his cousin and the new dragon arm that had fused with his body. The black scales, intricately veined in crimson, pulsed faintly, each throb synchronized with Caelum's heartbeat. The sight of it was both mesmerizing and unsettling—a reminder of the ancient, volatile power now coursing through Caelum's veins.

"I should check on him," Kairos said, his voice taking on a more serious tone as he moved to Caelum's side. He placed a hand on his cousin's forehead, feeling the steady warmth that reassured him Caelum was stable for now.

Eclipse's voice broke through his thoughts, his tone calm yet tinged with caution. "The procedure was a success, but don't let that cloud your judgment, Kairos. The power within that arm is ancient and volatile. It has a will of its own, tied to the primal instincts of the dragon it once belonged to."

Kairos continued to gaze at Caelum's new limb, his brow furrowing with worry. "I know, Eclipse. But I couldn't let him die. This was the only way." His voice was steady, but there was an undercurrent of doubt that he couldn't quite shake.

Eclipse floated closer only seen by Kairos new eyes, his presence almost palpable despite his intangible form. "You made the right choice, but mastering this power is Caelum's challenge, not yours. You can offer aid, however you must not interfere. The bond between the arm and its bearer is deeply personal, and it could be perilous if Caelum isn't strong enough to control it."

Kairos clenched his fists, a flicker of determination sparking in his eyes. "I'll be there for him, but I won't coddle him. This strength, Caelum will claim for himself." His words were resolute, though a part of him feared what that strength might cost Caelum.

Eclipse nodded approvingly, his form shimmering slightly in the morning light. "Good. Now, prepare yourself. There are still battles ahead, and not all of them will be fought with swords."

The soft rustling outside the tent signaled the return of his other cousins. Lysandra was the first to enter, her eyes immediately seeking out Caelum. "How is he?" she asked, her voice laced with concern as she brushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

Kairos offered her a small, reassuring smile. "He's stable. The arm… it's integrating well." He gestured to the dragon limb, which seemed almost alive as it pulsed faintly.

Lyra followed close behind, her usually playful demeanor subdued by the gravity of the situation. "That arm…" She trailed off, her gaze fixated on it. "Do you think he'll be able to control it?"

Kairos's expression hardened slightly. "He has to. There's no other choice."

Alaric, ever the protector, stepped into the tent last, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword. Her eyes were sharp, scanning the surroundings before settling on Kairos. "We need to move soon," she said, her voice firm. "There's no telling if the Icarus family will come back or if they have more allies."

Kairos nodded, his thoughts already turning to their next steps. "You're right. We can't stay here much longer. We'll need to find somewhere safe where Caelum can recover properly—and where we can plan our next move."

The cousins shared a brief moment of silent understanding. They had been through much together, but the road ahead was fraught with even greater dangers. As they began gathering their belongings, preparing to leave the relative safety of the tent, Kairos couldn't shake the feeling of unease that gnawed at him.
