Chapter 14 - Accident

"Boss, we tried stopping her, but she wouldn't listen," the head guard defended. "Just shut up! You shouldn't have tried; you were supposed to stop her from going out at this late hour of the night," Adams quarrelled. "Boss, here's the car key," another guard showed him the car key. "Get the car ready; we are going in search of her," he ordered.

Vivian, who was watching from the window, scoffed, praying silently for them not to find her.

Anna made her way into the dark cemetery with the aid of the light from her phone. She kept having the feeling that someone was following her, but she'd already made up her mind to accept whatever fate she met. Being dead is better than staying alive and suffering for a deal she made with the devil. Her mom was long gone, so what was the need for staying alive? Even the baby wouldn't blame its mother for killing herself alongside it. Her mother's name was written boldly on the gravestone; merely seeing that, a tear slipped down her cheek. She knelt down beside the grave and dropped the flower she came with. "I'm so sorry I couldn't save you. I got myself into this mess in desperation to save you, but it turned out different. You still left to face this wicked world alone. I thought he was a nice person, but he's worse than the devil. He's a wolf in sheep's clothing. He doesn't even care about my existence; he's only concerned about the baby. That was what we agreed, but he's taking it too far. He should at least accord me some respect. He went as far as embarrassing me in front of his maids! I feel so bitter, Mom. My heart hurts really badly." She wiped her tears with the back of her palm. She was about to get up when she felt the movement again. It was obvious someone was staring at her; the pair of eyes were digging deep into her skin, forcing her heart to race. She had made up her mind to face whatever came, but this wasn't part of it. Her blood pressure accelerated due to fear. Why was this person so eager to kill her with his creepy attitude? Anna knew for sure it was no ghost since she wasn't someone who believed in ghosts; ghosts only exist in fantasy and mythology. So she knew for sure it was a human scaring her. But who could it be? Who would have the mind to follow her to a cemetery just to scare her? "Don't be too silly—show your ugly face. Acting creepy doesn't scare me because I know for sure you are human. Now tell me, what will you gain by scaring me? What will you gain if I suffer a shock? Just stop it; I'm going through a lot already!" Anna stood up and began heading out. "Are you usually this fearless, or did you only gather the nerves to talk at a ghost?" Anna turned around to see the person who had just spoken to her, pointing her phone light on his face. "Daniel?" she called, walking closer to him. "Long time no see, Anna," the Daniel guy said, smiling. Even in the dark, Anna could recognize his face since they'd spent quite a lot of time together back in school. Daniel was the only friend she had. He had a crush on her the first day he resumed college; sooner, in year two, he confessed to her, but Anna turned him down due to the fear of facing the rich kids who wanted him. Although she regretted it after he traveled abroad in their third year, Anna lost contact with him and hasn't seen or heard from him since then. Seeing him now only ignited the feelings she had spent years trying to get rid of.

"How did you know I was here?" Anna questioned. They were now in the car since he had offered to take her home. His eyes never left her protruding belly and the engagement ring on her finger; he felt hurt seeing her pregnant by another man. "I was leaving when I sighted you coming. Although I didn't know it was you, I had to stay back and watch what a lady would be doing at the cemetery at that time of the night. It was after I heard your voice that I knew it was you. Why are you here? And why were you crying?" He walked closer. "I miss my mom, so I came to visit. Crying is normal. Nothing happened exactly; I just happen to miss my mom a lot more than on other days. What about you? Why are you here? Do you usually visit, or were you just passing by?" Anna asked, forcing Daniel to chuckle. "I come here every night to visit my mom." Anna shook her head pitifully. "Your mom is late?" Anna asked in surprise. Back then, she used to visit his house, and his mom wasn't very nice to her; she even warned her to stay away from him. His mom was among the reasons she turned him down. "Yeah, she died last year, and funny enough, I couldn't even come. I feel guilty," he sighed tiredly. "I'm sorry for your loss," Anna comforted. "It's fine; it's all in the past now." Anna, seeing he wasn't ready to say much about it, didn't bother to ask further questions. "I'm dropping you here; stop me here."

Anna waved at him until his car was out of sight. She had purposely asked him to drop her there since she didn't want him to know where she stayed to prevent future problems. If he in any way found out where she lived, he would go as far as coming there to look for her.

Confirming that his car was out of sight, Anna turned to start going. Their house was on the other side, so she had to cross the road. It was already late; only a few cars could be seen. She looked left, then turned right before crossing. She was sure there was no car coming before she crossed, but she hadn't gone halfway when a car suddenly pulled out from nowhere, hitting her down.
