Chereads / Redemption Of Hades / Chapter 6 - Missing soul investigation

Chapter 6 - Missing soul investigation

The chamber of judgment was grand and foreboding, with towering pillars made of dark obsidian, shimmering faintly in the dim light of the ethereal torches that lined the walls. A grand throne, carved from a single piece of onyx, sat at the far end, where Edward presided over the proceedings. The air was thick with the whispers of the dead, echoing softly around the room.

Edward looked up from the troubled soul before him, sensing the presence of Thanatos. The god of death was a formidable figure, draped in a cloak as dark as the deepest night, his eyes glowing with an otherworldly light.

"Hades, there is a matter that requires your attention," Thanatos said, his voice grave.

"A soul has gone missing, my lord. Not just any soul, but the soul of Theseus," Thanatos replied, his tone grave.

Edward's eyes narrowed. "Theseus? The hero of Athens? How could this happen?"

Thanatos shook his head. "We do not know. His soul was last seen in the Asphodel Meadows. But now it has vanished. This is unprecedented."

Edward's mind raced. Theseus was not just a soul, he was a figure of great significance. His disappearance could disrupt the balance of the underworld and potentially the mortal world as well.

"We must find him," Edward declared. "Gather my most trusted lieutenants. We will search every corner of the underworld."

Thanatos bowed. "As you command, my lord."

Edward wasted no time. He called upon his lieutenants- Charon, the ferryman; Cerberus, the three-headed guardian and gatekeeper; and the Erinyes, the avenging spirits.

Each had a specific role in maintaining the order of the underworld, and their combined efforts would be crucial in the search for Theseus.

Charon was tasked with questioning every soul that crossed the River Styx. Cerberus would patrol the borders of the underworld, ensuring no soul could escape unnoticed. The Erinyes would search the darkest corners, where secrets often hid.

As days passed, the search yielded no results. One evening, as Edward stood by the River Lethe, lost in thought, a faint voice called out to him. "Hades, help me."

Edward turned to see a faint, shimmering figure. A soul caught between realms. It was the soul of a young woman, her form flickering like a dying flame.

"Who are you?" Edward asked, his voice gentle.

"My name is Phaedra," the soul replied. "I was Theseus's wife when I was alive. I have information about his disappearance."

Edward's eyes narrowed. "Speak, Phaedra. What do you know?"

Phaedra's form shimmered as she began to speak. "Theseus's soul was taken by a rogue spirit named Alecto. She was once one of the Erinyes. But she has turned against you. She seeks to overthrow your rule by disrupting the balance of the underworld."

Edward's jaw tightened. Alecto's betrayal was a grave matter. "Where is she now?"

"She hides in the Labyrinth of Lost Souls," Phaedra said. "A place where the most troubled souls wander, forgotten and forsaken."

Edward nodded. "Thank you, Phaedra. You have done well. I will find Theseus and bring him back."

Phaedra's form began to fade. "Please, be careful. Alecto is powerful and cunning."

Edward set out for the Labyrinth of Lost Souls, a place few dared to enter. The labyrinth was a twisted maze of shadow and despair, its paths constantly shifting and changing. As he ventured deeper, the air grew colder, and the cries of lost souls echoed around him.

He encountered countless spirits, each lost in their own torment. Some reached out to him, pleading for help, while others shrank back in fear. Edward moved through the labyrinth with determination, guided by the faint traces of Theseus's presence.

Finally, he reached the heart of the labyrinth, a vast chamber filled with swirling mist. At its center stood Alecto, her form dark and menacing. Beside her, chained to a stone pillar, was Theseus.

"Hades," Alecto sneered. "I knew you would come."

"Alecto, you have violated the laws of the underworld," Edward said, his voice steady. "Release Theseus and surrender."

Alecto laughed, a cold, bitter sound. "I will do no such thing. The underworld needs a new ruler, one who understands the true nature of power."

Edward stepped forward, his gaze unyielding. "You are mistaken, Alecto. Power is not about control or domination. It is about justice and balance."

Alecto's eyes flashed with anger. "You are weak, Hades. I will show you the true meaning of power."

With a wave of her hand, she summoned dark tendrils of energy that lashed out at Edward. He dodged and countered with a burst of divine light, the force of their clash shaking the chamber.

The battle raged, each combatant drawing on their unique strengths. Alecto's attacks were fierce and relentless, driven by her desire for power. Edward's strikes were precise and controlled, fueled by his commitment to justice.

As the fight continued, Edward noticed that Alecto's movements became more erratic, and her attacks were less focused. It was as if the labyrinth itself was turning against her, sensing her betrayal.

Seizing the opportunity, Edward unleashed a powerful wave of energy that knocked Alecto to the ground. He approached her, his expression firm. "It is over, Alecto. Surrender."

Alecto looked up at him, her eyes filled with hatred and desperation. "I will never surrender."

With a final burst of strength, she lunged at Edward, but he was ready. He deflected her attack and bound her with chains of divine light.

"Your rebellion ends here," Edward said. "You will face judgment for your actions."

As Alecto was taken away, Edward turned to Theseus, releasing him from his chains. "Are you all right?"

Theseus nodded, his expression weary but grateful. "Thank you, Hades. I thought I would be lost forever."

"You are safe now," Edward said. "Come, let us return to the surface."

Together, they made their way out of the labyrinth, the shadows receding as they emerged into the light.

As Edward and Theseus emerged from the Labyrinth of Lost Souls, the air grew warmer, and the oppressive darkness gave way to a more familiar gloom of the underworld.

Edward guided Theseus back to the Asphodel Meadows, where the souls of ordinary mortals wandered, neither blessed nor cursed.

Thanatos and the Erinyes met them there, their expressions a mix of relief and concern. "My lord, you have done it," Thanatos said, bowing slightly. "But Alecto's betrayal is troubling. There may be more unrest in the underworld."

Edward nodded, his expression serious. "We will address it. But first, Theseus must be restored to his rightful place."

As Theseus was escorted back to his dwelling in the Elysian Fields, Edward convened a council with his lieutenants- Thanatos, Charon, Cerberus, and the Erinyes. The atmosphere in the grand hall was tense, the weight of recent events hanging heavily over them.

"We cannot ignore the implications of Alecto's actions," Edward began. "Her betrayal indicates deeper discontent. We must root out any other conspirators and restore order."

Thanatos stepped forward. "Hades, Alecto had followers among the discontented souls and some lower-ranking spirits. We should conduct a thorough investigation."

Charon nodded in agreement. "I will ensure that no soul crosses the River Styx without thorough scrutiny. We cannot allow any more disturbances."

Cerberus growled, his three heads nodding in unison. "I will increase patrols around the borders. No soul will leave or enter without my notice."

The Erinyes, known for their relentless pursuit of justice, stepped forward. "We will interrogate those who were close to Alecto. Her actions cannot go unpunished, and any remaining conspirators must be brought to justice."

Edward listened to his lieutenants, his mind already forming a plan. "We will proceed with caution and diligence. The underworld must remain a place of order and balance. Begin your tasks immediately."

As his lieutenants dispersed to carry out their duties, Edward found himself alone in the grand hall. The flickering torches cast long shadows on the walls, creating an eerie yet familiar ambiance. He walked to the edge of the River Lethe, the waters are known for their power to erase memories.

Reflecting on the events, Edward knew that maintaining order in the underworld was an ongoing challenge. The souls under his care were varied and complex, each with their own histories and desires. But he was determined to uphold his duty as Hades, ensuring that justice and balance prevailed.
