Michael was the more muscular friend between him and Dean. "Wait up", he said panting, he had clearly been running and I could see a bead of sweat run down his neck. As usual, his clothes were holding on for dear life and were splitting at the seams. You could see that his chest and stomach were chiseled and his calves were the size of my head. He wasn't short either, he stood at least two heads higher than me. I suddenly felt very uncomfortable. I could feel my cheeks start to burn a bright red and my heart started beating faster. I turned my head away quickly and tried to focus on something else, anything else. I found a random tree to focus on and kept my gaze pinned on it. Michael leaned in closer to me and whispered in my ear. "What are we looking at?" I felt a shiver run down my spine and I felt my stomach muscles tighten.
I turned my head to look at him and hadn't noticed how close he really was. He had draped his arm over my shoulder, hugging me close and bent down to my level and now our noses were now touching. Our mouths were so close if one of us got bumped, we would be kissing. I could feel him staring at me and all I could do was look down, I was frozen in place. I could feel a smile spread across his lips. He moved away from me and gave a small sigh. Stretching his arms above his head and exposing half his stomach in the process, he groaned. "Why are you girls so short?" I just looked at him as though he had three heads. "What?" I managed one word, I was going to ask why he was invading my space and what he wanted but one word was all I managed.
"To the point huh? Well, I'm going to need Mary's number." Michael said with a very natural face. He didn't mince words or even look embarrassed, this clearly wasn't the first time he asked for a girl's number. "Why don't you ask her yourself?" I wasn't going to give this lady's man my friend's number, no way was I doing that to her. I would let her decide if she wanted to chance it with him. "You see", he said leaning into me again and I could smell his toothpaste. "It's not for me." I felt as though he had just slapped me with a wet fish. "Who?" I only managed another single-word sentence. I have read a fair few books and my vocabulary was quite good and here I am with sentences used by the twins. What's wrong with me? "Well,..." he started with a sly grin ".. you see that coward over there?" He pointed in the opposite direction of the tree I had been looking at earlier and I just now noticed that Dean was hiding behind another tree and wasn't doing a very good job. He picked the smallest, thinnest tree he could find and his body was completely visible. He felt the need to peer around the tree as well. At this, I giggled. He was one of the people contributing to the reputation of jocks not being all that intelligent.
I pointed my finger in Dean's direction. "For?" Oh, here we go with the single-word sentences again. Fantastic! Michael started laughing uncontrollably. "Yes, that moron!" he shouted loud enough for Dean to hear, Dean moved his head behind the tree and tried to hide that from us too but he ended up looking like he was examining the tree rather intently. As I said, we could see all of him behind his excuse of a hiding spot. "Please put me out of my misery," Michael asked. "But?" I began. "No," Michael said firmly. "You don't understand," he continued. "If I have to hear another practice confession or him mention her one more time, I might just put him out of his misery." At this, I couldn't help but laugh. "I'll ask her." Finally, still not a full sentence but better than one word.
