Chapter 13 - clash with Nightmare

The wind carried a chilling whisper through the desolate valley, as if the land itself feared what lay ahead. Hakishi and Lee trudged forward, bruised but unwavering. Their last encounter with Aduru had taught them one thing: they weren't ready to take on the strongest. But that didn't mean they couldn't take on someone else.

Someone evil. Someone dangerous.

Someone like Nightmare.

Rumors of Nightmare's reign of terror had spread far and wide. He was a rogue who thrived in darkness, a master of illusion and fear. Entire villages had disappeared under his shadow, and those who survived his attacks spoke of horrors beyond comprehension.

Lee tightened his fists as they approached the cave where Nightmare was said to dwell. "This guy's got nothing on us," he said, trying to sound confident.

Hakishi raised an eyebrow. "Lee, we just got demolished by Aduru. Maybe dial down the bravado?"

"Yeah, but Aduru's like... Aduru. This guy's just a creepy dude with a cool name. What's the worst he can do?"

As if on cue, the ground trembled beneath their feet. Shadows seemed to leak from the mouth of the cave, twisting unnaturally and forming shapes that danced and flickered. A low, menacing laugh echoed from within, sending chills down their spines.

"Well," Hakishi said, drawing his Phantom Edge, "I think we're about to find out."

The Villain Appears

From the depths of the cave, Nightmare emerged. He was tall and wiry, his body wrapped in tattered black robes that seemed to ripple like smoke. His face was obscured by a dark, featureless mask, but his glowing crimson eyes pierced through the void.

"So," Nightmare said, his voice like nails scraping against a chalkboard, "these are the fools who dare disturb my domain."

Lee smirked, summoning a swirl of wind around his fists. "We're here to take you down, Nightmare. You've terrorized enough people!"

Nightmare tilted his head, as if amused. "Take me down? How quaint. Do you even know what I am?"

"An edgy villain who shops exclusively at the 'evil overlord' section?" Hakishi quipped.

Nightmare didn't respond with words. Instead, he raised a hand, and the shadows around him sprang to life. Tendrils of darkness shot forward, writhing and snapping like serpents. Hakishi and Lee dodged just in time, the tendrils smashing into the ground where they had been standing.

"Stay sharp!" Hakishi shouted. "This guy's no joke!"

The Battle Begins

Lee launched himself into action, spinning like a whirlwind as he summoned a storm of wind and lightning. "Take this!" he yelled, sending a barrage of bolts toward Nightmare.

The villain raised a hand, and the shadows around him coalesced into a shield, absorbing the attack. With a flick of his wrist, the shield transformed into a massive claw, swiping at Lee and sending him flying backward.

Hakishi darted in, his Phantom Edge slicing through the air with deadly precision. He aimed for Nightmare's chest, but the villain melted into the shadows, reappearing behind Hakishi and delivering a swift kick to his back.

"Too slow," Nightmare taunted.

Hakishi grunted, rolling to his feet. "I hate it when they say that."

The battle intensified. Lee recovered and joined the fray, his movements fast and unpredictable as he weaved between Nightmare's shadowy attacks. Hakishi struck from the other side, his blades glowing with energy as he tried to land a hit.

But Nightmare was relentless. His control over the shadows was absolute, and he used them to create decoys, traps, and weapons that kept the duo constantly on their toes.

"Is this all you've got?" Nightmare sneered, forming a massive hammer out of darkness and slamming it down toward Lee.

Lee barely managed to dodge, the ground cracking beneath the force of the attack. "Why do villains always trash-talk so much? Can't you just fight in silence?"

---

A Desperate Counterattack

Hakishi and Lee regrouped, panting and battered. Nightmare stood before them, unscathed and unimpressed.

"This isn't working," Hakishi admitted. "He's too slippery. We need to catch him off guard."

Lee's eyes lit up. "I've got an idea. Keep him busy!"

Hakishi nodded, charging forward with renewed determination. He unleashed a flurry of Phantom Edge strikes, each one faster and more precise than the last. Nightmare blocked and dodged with ease, but his focus remained on Hakishi.

Meanwhile, Lee crouched low, summoning a powerful vortex beneath his feet. The wind swirled around him, growing stronger and stronger until it formed a massive cyclone.

"Hey, Nightmare!" Lee shouted. "Think fast!"

Nightmare turned just in time to see Lee hurl the cyclone straight at him. The vortex tore through the battlefield, sucking up rocks, debris, and even some of Nightmare's shadowy constructs.

For the first time, Nightmare seemed caught off guard. He raised his arms, summoning a barrier of darkness to block the attack, but the force of the cyclone pushed him back.

Hakishi seized the opportunity. "Now's my chance!"

He leapt forward, channeling all of his energy into a single strike. His Phantom Edge blades shimmered with light as he brought them down toward Nightmare.

The villain's barrier shattered under the combined force of the cyclone and Hakishi's attack. Nightmare stumbled, his shadowy form flickering.

The Final Stand

Hakishi and Lee stood side by side, their energy nearly depleted but their spirits unyielding. Nightmare rose from the ground, his crimson eyes blazing with fury.

"You dare challenge me?" he roared, his voice echoing like thunder. "You will regret this insolence!"

The shadows around him surged, forming a massive, monstrous shape—a towering beast made of pure darkness. Its roar shook the battlefield as it charged toward Hakishi and Lee.

Lee looked at Hakishi. "Got any bright ideas?"

Hakishi grinned, despite the odds. "Yeah. Don't die."

Together, they launched one final attack. Hakishi's Phantom Edge sliced through the beast's legs, while Lee summoned a massive bolt of lightning to strike its head. The beast let out a deafening roar before collapsing into a heap of shadows.

Nightmare, now weakened and exposed, stumbled backward. "This… this isn't over," he growled.

Hakishi pointed his blade at the villain. "Oh, it's over. And next time, bring a flashlight."

Nightmare glared at them before dissolving into the shadows, retreating into the darkness.

Aftermath

The battlefield was silent once more, the air still heavy with tension. Hakishi and Lee collapsed to the ground, exhausted but victorious.

"We did it," Lee said, grinning through the pain. "We actually beat him."

Hakishi chuckled, staring up at the sky. "Barely. But yeah, we did."

Lee sat up, looking toward the cave. "Think he'll be back?"

"Probably," Hakishi said. "Villains like him always are."

"Good," Lee replied, his eyes filled with determination. "Because next time, we'll be even stronger."

The two of them laughed, their spirits unbroken despite the odds. The fight with Nightmare had pushed them to their limits, but it had also reminded them of what they were capable of.

And somewhere in the shadows, Nightmare watched, his crimson eyes burning with a promise of revenge.
