Chapter 14 - the final Nightmare

The moon hung high in the night sky, casting an eerie glow over the battlefield. The ground was scarred from the relentless battle, littered with craters and debris. Lee lay crumpled against a jagged rock, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. His breathing was shallow, his energy depleted.

Nightmare loomed over him, his shadowy form radiating menace. "Pathetic," the villain spat, his crimson eyes burning with malice. "You thought you could challenge me? This is the fate of fools."

"Stay away from him!" Hakishi's voice rang out like thunder. He stepped forward, his Phantom Edge blazing with a fierce light. His eyes were filled with unrelenting determination, his body battered but still standing.

Nightmare turned to face him, his dark mask tilting slightly. "Do you wish to share his fate, Hakishi? Or perhaps you'd like to die slower, to truly savor the agony?"

Hakishi smirked, wiping blood from his lip. "Big talk for someone about to eat dirt. Hey, Nightmare… this is your last day on Earth."

Nightmare's head tilted in amusement, but Hakishi wasn't finished.

"This is your ending. You will soon witness your first and last nightmare."

With a roar, Hakishi launched himself at Nightmare, his blades cutting through the air with deadly precision.

A Clash of Titans

Nightmare summoned a wave of shadow to intercept him, the tendrils coiling like serpents. But Hakishi was faster. He spun midair, his Phantom Edge slicing through the darkness and dispersing the attack. Landing with a roll, he charged again, unleashing a flurry of strikes.

Nightmare blocked with ease, his own shadowy constructs forming shields and weapons to counter Hakishi's assault. Each clash of light and darkness sent shockwaves rippling through the battlefield, the ground trembling under their feet.

"You're persistent," Nightmare said, forming a massive spear of shadows and thrusting it at Hakishi.

Hakishi dodged, the spear grazing his shoulder but failing to stop him. "I've got something you don't."

Nightmare laughed, the sound echoing ominously. "Oh? And what might that be?"

"Heart," Hakishi replied, his voice steady. He pushed forward, channeling all his energy into his blades. The Phantom Edge burned brighter, cutting through Nightmare's defenses and forcing the villain to retreat.

Nightmare's Wrath

Enraged, Nightmare unleashed his full power. The shadows around him exploded outward, forming a massive, writhing beast that towered over Hakishi. Its claws were as sharp as daggers, its eyes glowing with malevolent energy.

"You think you can defeat me?" Nightmare roared, his voice a cacophony of anger and hatred. "I am fear itself! I am eternal!"

Hakishi stood his ground, his blades held steady. "Fear might be eternal, but you're not."

The beast lunged, its massive claw descending upon Hakishi with the force of an avalanche. Hakishi rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding the attack, and countered with a powerful slash that severed one of the beast's arms.

The creature howled in pain, but Nightmare wasn't finished. The severed arm reformed instantly, and the beast lashed out with a tail of pure shadow, striking Hakishi and sending him skidding across the ground.

A Battle of Wills

Hakishi struggled to his feet, his body screaming in protest. His vision blurred, but he refused to back down. Across the battlefield, he saw Lee's broken form and clenched his fists.

"I won't let you win," Hakishi growled. "Not while I'm still breathing."

He channeled every ounce of energy he had left into his Phantom Edge. The blades began to pulse with an intense light, their glow cutting through the darkness like a beacon of hope.

Nightmare snarled, the beast charging at Hakishi with terrifying speed. Hakishi didn't flinch. He waited until the last possible moment, then leapt into the air, flipping over the beast's head and driving his blades into its spine.

The creature roared in agony, thrashing wildly as Hakishi hung on, his blades carving through its shadowy form. With a final, powerful strike, he severed the beast's head, and it collapsed into a heap of shadows.

---

The Final Blow

Nightmare stumbled, his form flickering as the beast dissolved. He was weaker now, his power drained, but his hatred burned brighter than ever.

"This isn't over," Nightmare hissed, forming a blade of shadow and lunging at Hakishi.

Hakishi sidestepped, his movements fueled by sheer determination. "You're right. It's not over yet."

He slashed at Nightmare, his blades carving through the villain's defenses. Each strike chipped away at Nightmare's form, the shadows retreating as Hakishi pressed his advantage.

Finally, Hakishi stood over Nightmare, his Phantom Edge raised high.

"You should've stayed in the dark," Hakishi said, his voice cold.

With a powerful swing, he brought his blades down, slicing through Nightmare's core. The villain let out a final, guttural scream as his form disintegrated into nothingness.

Aftermath

The battlefield fell silent. The oppressive weight of Nightmare's presence was gone, replaced by a strange sense of peace. Hakishi dropped to his knees, his energy spent.

He crawled over to Lee, who was still breathing but unconscious. "We did it, Lee," Hakishi whispered, a faint smile on his lips. "The nightmare's over."

The sky began to lighten as dawn approached, the first rays of sunlight breaking through the horizon. Hakishi sat there, cradling his injured friend, the weight of their victory settling in.

They had faced the darkness and won.

But Hakishi knew this was only the beginning. The world was still full of challenges, and their journey was far from over.

For now, though, they had earned a moment of rest.
