Chapter 12 - The Inquisition

Zack leaned on his desk, with a dazed expression seemingly recalling his mother's words.

The matured and dignified voice of his mother resounded inside his mind,

"If a solution is not discovered before your birthday, then we will have no choice but to proceed with the World United Governments' plan. And trust me this is a better solution than living the rest of your life bearing that curse"

These words kept on repeating themselves inside Zack's mind. He was quite shaken by the revalation of his arsonic curse. Ofcourse he had always been aware that he was cursed after experiencing the relative signs that a cursed person would experience when they are a few years away from manifesting it.

What Zack didn't know was, the full scope of the negative impact that this curse would bring upon him.

He seemingly possessed shallow knowledge of this aspect, and was told that once the curse manifested, one would possess chaotic urges to set afire most of their precious items like a arsonist and was only learning about the distortion of space from his mother today.

Truth be told the distortion of space wasn't really a negative impact and was actually a very useful ability that could be utilized, this was proved by the fact that the World United Governments and other influential organizations were planning to utilize it for their own purposes.

As for the chaotic urges of being an arsonist, this was where the true horrors of the Arsonic curse truly layed.

Zack's notion of thought on this aspect of the curse was terribly misguided.

As it turned out, this negative effect of the curse was very dangerous truly earning the caliber of being a negative effect of the arsonic curse.

Once the Arsonic curse manifested, an alteration would unfold on one's soul, transforming them into a kindling spirit that is consumed by the mad desire of sacrificing and reaping the lives of its loved ones by igniting them with tormenting flames.

These chaotic desires were unable to be satiated by burning his enemy because the requirements of the curse would only be met when he felt pain from the target of the burning.

This curse granted him the ability to conjure flaming abilities that could physically harm those close to him in the heart but had no physical effect on his enemies.

Basically the young Mason would become a world threatening calamity that threatened the very existence of those he interacted with.

This was why the World United Governments was so wary of him, and was preparing to dispose him once he was done bring useful to them.

Recalling all this information, Zack suddenly sighed dejectedly.

He couldn't even focus on his experiments right now, which showed how rattled he was.

After a few moments of pondering about this matter in a dazed state, Zack later heard a soft knock on the labaratory's door,

After permitting the person on the other side of the door to come in, Zack later saw his mother entering inside the lab room.

She walked in with composed footsteps and informed him that dinner was ready. She was smiling at him with that usual warm smile as if they never had the heartbreaking talk from earlier.

Zack couldn't understand how she managed to maintain her composure after knowing that her son was probably two weeks away from dying.

Once his mother left Zack followed her to the dining room, to eat.

After eating he went to his room to sleep, his mind was filled with a torrent of chaotic thoughts that it was impossible for him to focus on other things.

Sleeping was the only thing he could do to distract himself from these thoughts.

Tomorrow was going to be a big and dreadful day for him, it was the day he was going to experience his genetic enhancement procedure which he was very concerned about.

While thinking about the genetic enhancement procedure, Zack suddenly thought about a certain boy who had come with a proposition to him claiming that he was on his side.

Thinking about this, Zack couldn't help but think that this young classmate of his might possess a solution to his curse, since he claimed that he was on Zack's side.

As Zack thought about this deeply, he began to realize something, if it was a while ago he would have definitely not even consider the young boy's offer, but after learning about his curse he was now willing to hear what they had to say, wasn't this to much of a coincidence.

There was a possibility that Leon's power had something to do with how things turned out to be.

Shaking his head off from these complicated thoughts, Zack went and wore his sleeping robe and then removed his glasses, which he then placed on the small wooden desk that was located near his bed.

After that he went towards his bed and and drowned himself in sleep.

The night passed, while the dark haired boy was fast asleep. This time in his dreams he did not dream about the strange old scientist who apparently was the leader of the mysterious organization that was backing Leon.

When morning arrived, the dark haired boy was woken up by the sound of his alarm.

He lazily left his bed while yawning.

After that he went towards the bathroom where he washed his face and brushed his teeth.

Coming back to his room he donned an average sized white t-shirt and loose blue genes. He also retrieved his golden rimmed glasses which he wiped clean with a white cloth. Once the lenses were clean Zack wore his glasses and descended downstairs.

His mother had already left for work and had already prepared breakfast for him.

Before he could enter the kitchen to retrieve his breakfast, the young Mason suddenly heard the door bell ringing.

A moment later he reached the door and opened it, to which he found a surprising figure waiting outside.

The figure was a young boy of average size, he had short messy brown hair and dull looking eyes.

Once the door was opened Leon, suddenly smiled at Zack and waved at Zack.

The sudden appearance of this brown haired classmate of his, had clearly startled Zack, which was visible on his face.

Staring cautiously at Leon who was wearing a black leather jacket and black trousers, Zack saw that this time the young awakened had come by himself without the hooded girl from earlier.

After a few seconds of being carefully scrutinized by Zack, Leon eventually asked,

"Aren't you going to invite me inside?

Zack, nonchantly replied,

"Nope"

He turned silent for a moment as if he was contemplating about something, then a few seconds he finally asked,

"What do you want?

Leon at this point shrugged, walked inside the house, simply inviting himself inside. As he walked inside the house, he spoke calmly,

"Can't l come and visit my friend and besides today is the big day for us, since we are going to experience the genetic enhancement procedure together"

Zack was startled by Leon's choice of words,

Since when were they friends.

This caused him to subconsciously overlook the fact that Leon had just invited himself, after he clearly stated that he could not enter inside.

"What do you want! ?

Zack once again repeated this question with a slightly louder tone than earlier.

Seeing the serious expression on Zack's face, Leon sighed emotionally and said,

"Gods can you be less tense, l have already told you, l mean you no harm"

Zack then asked vigilantly,

"And l am supposed to believe you just because you said so"

Leon grinned when he heard these words,

"Yah, after all l am a very trustworthy looking person".

Zack at this moment remained silent without commenting, this earned him another sigh from Leon.

"Sigh, l am pretty sure you already know why l am here.

Have you finally thought about the offer from earlier"

Zack scoffed at this moment,

"Yah l did, and l guess l have you to thank"

Leon just shrugged and did not reply.

Seeing that Leon had no intention of directly admitting his interference in how things turned out and had just indirectly admitted that he was involved, Zack then suddenly asked,

"This deal you are proposing, you keep saying that you offer it with my best intentions in heart, what do you mean by that and don't say that you are trying to help me, l know that its a white lie"

Leon replied with a calm voice,

"Well the thing is, our current goal right now is to ensure your safety, until all the falls have befallen on the earth. As for what is it in for us, you are the key to helping our leader escape his current predicament. Don't ask about what kind of predicament he is in, since we don't really know much about it and we are only basing it through a prophecy that we have been told by our diviner"

Zack took a large breath of air and asked another question,

"So once l join, will you ensure my absolute safety, l mean from the World United Governments and from the fate of my curse?

At this point Zack no longer saw the need to hide the news of his curse from the other party, since the lad was clearly more aware of this detail than he was.

Leon voice, calm and steady resounded once again,

"Well we cant ensure you absolute safety, but we will try our best to protect you. Since we are dealing with big organizations that practically rule the world, we cant be obvious with our actions and can only deploy a small squad of people to protect you, in this case me.

As for your curse we don't have a prepared solution for it at this moment"

Zack at this moment turned gloomy, he was kind of hoping that he could find the solution from this mysterious organization.

Leon at this moment, suddenly said,

"About your curse, l wouldn't worry that much about it, our leader and your father have the means of halting its process when, push comes to shove. And don't ask me what I mean by halting its process, for l don't know"

Zack eventually asked the last question,

"You keep, mentioning the word we, it makes me wonder who exactly are you referring?

Leon grinned towards Zack, at replied excitedly,

"Oh that, well...l am talking about the organization that is backing me. l am referring to none other than the infamous Inquisition"
